View Full Version : Starting diet/supps. too early??

So I know you are supposed to start the diet/supps. etc. at least 6 weeks before TTC, but is there any harm or benefit to starting it 3-4 months before TTCing?
Will my body get too used to the changes and they won't be effective or it is better to start earlier and then your body is really more boy friendly in my case?
Are there parts of swaying that are better to start earlier? For example, I lift weights, not crazy but some. We won't be TTCing until the fall, should I stop and start again in the summer or keep doing the weights. I know I will not up too much from what I am doing now (the Jillian Michaels 30 Day shred w/5 lb. weights)

Yes, there can be both harm and benefit unfortunately.
Harm in that if you start diet too soon (for TTC boy that is) you may gain too much weight and body fat can sometimes affect fertility negatively, and some very heavy women have more daughters.
Depending on what supps you were planning to do, some of the boy supps are not very healthy and best to minimize the length of time you're on them. (COT, BSD, high sodium intake)
Benefit in that testosterone can take some time to rise, so by starting diet earlier, you ensure that your T levels have time to rise. Also, some people believe that if you are on diet for the full lifespan of the egg, this makes the egg more receptive to Y sperm vs. X. (i don't believe this, just that some do.)
Lifting weights - the sooner, the better! The more muscle you have, the more likely you are to TTC a boy. Keep it up!!
Also, carrying over from another thread but the sooner your husband quits or cuts back on smoking, the better.

That helps, I think it'll be better to start incorporating some things now then.
We plan to do the diet (although I am veg. so will still be doing eggs, beans, and some dairy). He will start eating meat again (he hasn't since I've been the one cooking)
He'll do the One A Day vit.,
L-Arginine,
Fish oil ,
Vit D.
maybe an extra 25mg Zinc, there is 22.5 in the multi vit.
I'll do the woman's One A Day,
B-12 (to make up being a vegetarian),
Folic Acid, Fish Oil and maybe also Flaxseed (can't remember why that isn't good)
Vit. D
We'll both lift weights and do lemon/lime water. No plan to do the BSD or COT drinks so I think the things we are doing are good to start early.
I really don't plan to gain more than 3-5 pounds. I think I just need to eat smaller amounts more frequently and after cutting out sweets and esp. the ice cream it should balance out with not gaining a lot.
I weighed the most, 120lb when I had my DS and then anywhere between 112-118 when I got pg. with all the girls so I am thinking I only need to weigh a little bit more?
Anyone think of any other supps. I DEFINITELY should be doing that I am missing?

I tend to think that sometimes the earlier you start the more likely you are to give the diet up before you get your bfp as it can be difficult to stick to. Good luck :)

From personal experience i found some of the supps to do unusual things to my cycle, so i would assume starting earlier would be less frustrating as you can see what happens before you start trying, then gives your body time to become used to them and hopefully go back to normal. The diet is really hard to stick to long term if you are not a big eater, but the long term effects of being on the diet would certianly help your chances for a boy, you will pretty much be stocking up on all the good stuff, so when you do start trying there will be plenty in reserve. Also weight lifting will be great to start early, hard to stick to also but you really dont want to put on much weight from the diet, so exrecise is definatly going to help with that.

Just remember you could fall pg right away so in that case you will want to have been doing the "right" things for at least 6 weeks, but you may not fall pg for months after you start trying so you need to be prepared to stick to the "right" things for a long time.

Wheatgrass capsules and brewers yeast tablets are good easy way to add nutrients to your diet.

Thanks Cinss and Tickled,
I was worried about getting lazy too, so I think I will start the diet 3-4 months ahead, but allow a few "cheats" here and there, but then the last 6-8 weeks be strict about it and then start adding more salt. I think I had 3 girls in a row because of skipping breakfast and eating a lot more sugar than I used to.
Weights ? I started doing weights in May 2011 (about 8 weeks before I pg. with DD#3) I didn't know anything about swaying then, just felt less toned after DD#2 so wanted to get in shape.
So, I stopped weights from Dec. 2011 to April 2012 while I was pg and for 4 weeks after my daughter was born.
Last year when I started, I had no muscle, but am now able to do almost all of the Jillian Micheals Level 3 30 Day Shred.
with 5 lb. weights (Jillian uses 3 lb. weights)
How impt. is it to keep upping the amount of weights vs. just maintaining?
I know I only have time for 20 min. 4-5 times/week which is what I have been doing. I will try to up the jillian 30 Day shred by using 8lb/ weights, but I don't think I can do more than that. Does anyone know of any other good 20 min. weight workouts?
I am definitely thinking of also getting Wheatgrass and gelatin tablets. I am planning to use a lot of nutritional yeast flakes in our food. I know the Brewer's is a bit better, but I think if I add too many things for DH and myself to drink and/or take as a pill he won't do it.
Is CoQ10 really all that? DH will be taking the One a Day and the L-Arginine, the CQ10 is just really expensive

DH doesn't need any more than the 22.5 mg. The amounts listed on IG (50 mg) is too high for safety and may actually lower sperm count/quality (normal doses of minerals sway blue, but high doses of many minerals may sway pink - NO ONE overdose their husband with minerals for swaying pink please, very very dangerous!!!)
Your supps look good - the reason I'm down on flaxseed is because it has a compound in it that may not be great for TTC blue. I'd rather see you do EPO from AF-O only and then fish oil thru the entire cycle.
3-5 lbs is ideal and just what I would recommend. :agree:

You don't strictly need to up the weights, but if you DID, it would help you add more muscle. Don't go above 8 lbs tho because that's awfully hard on your joints and I dont' want you to get injured and then unable to lift. 5 lbs is probably plenty for the Jillian exercise program.
Gelatin, wheat grass, and NFY are great but I agree, the more you guys try to take, the less you'll want to do it.
I could take or leave the Coq10. Meat has Coq10 in it and it is AWFULLY expensive!!!

Thank you AS, you're invaluable!
I was only worried about plateauing on the weights.
I think I have to set my limit on the supps
(both of us-One A Day, Krill (Fish) Oil, Folic Acid, Vit D, Gelatin) +L'Aginine for DH and maybe Fertile CM for me from AF-O.
Then lemon water and NYF on things.
Of course, the HE diet as well for us both. I think I just have to go with my gut and not get too fixated on things.
I was a classic LE diet before, no breakfast, maybe a couple pieces of fruit until 2 pm in the afternoon! Then salad and chips or some pasta then Peanut butter w/ice cream for dinner. So even though I had some boy friendly elements I just didn't eat a lot and must have had really low blood sugar. I am thinking the diet should help improve things considerably.

It's ok to plateau on weights tho because just the action of lifting itself, raises T. Even if your muscles aren't growing any more.
Some people have had weird results with the Fertile CM drying them up, while others have had good luck with it. if it works for you, that's great, just keep an eye on it!
Everything else looks great!!!

Thanks AS,
I think I am going to try Dh's L'Arginine instead of the FertileCM, seems to be the main ingredient anyway.
I am getting excited, even though it's months away(Sept/Oct) still gotta get my period back first.
It's hard trying to remember to eat, especially breakfast, but I am glad it's making me healthier. I have actually lost 3 lbs this week, but have eaten more.
I do want to try and gain weight though because I will still be breastfeeding when we start TTC in the fall and my DD will be 6 months so still nursing quite a few times a day. I think I definitely need to work on protein, I have to remember to eat some every few hours. I need to reverse and of the girl swaying bfing can do.
