Hey, I know this is a little beyond my usual subject matter, but I saw a question about this on FB and I thought I would write a quick essay for anyone who might be in this situation because heaven knows I have experience!!! :sigh:

EVERYONE who experiences any heart related symptoms should obviously talk to a doctor, but this may help put your mind at ease.

:awe:Heart palpitations and tachycardia - These are SUPER SCARY but super common during pregnancy, and 99% of the time are totally benign. Any time you are physically aware of your heartbeat, that's medically referred to as heart palpitations. You may feel that your heart is fluttering, skipping beats, that you can feel your heart beating throughout your entire body or hear your pulse in your ears, or your heart may race (this is called tachycardia). My heart has beat 200 times a minute for minutes at a time, and it is terrifying, esp. when pregnant. You may feel slightly dizzy or lightheaded while it happens or you may feel perfectly fine.

:awe:Why it happens - your body makes a lot more blood than it normally has to sustain pregnancy, it beats a little faster and harder to pump that blood, and also makes high levels of hormones as well (another time women get heart palpitations is during menopause). All these things can contribute to palpitations.

Some of us actually have a little bit of extra electrical conduit in our hearts that can conduct electricity backwards up our heart and cause tachycardia. This is called SVT (supraventricular tachycardia) and many of us walk around our entire lives with this and never even know. For whatever reason, pregnancy may trigger this misfiring to happen.

:awe:What can you do to prevent it -

You may find things that trigger your heart to act up. Lying down, especially lying on your left side as doctors often recommend that you do, may make you more aware of your heartbeat - everyone's heart skips regularly, but most of us just never notice it. Pregnancy seems to make your heartbeat easier to feel.

Eating sugar, caffeine, anxiety, nicotine, alcohol, being very full, being overly warm, certain medications (even seemingly harmless things like B vitamins - maybe your prenatal??) and even changes in breathing patterns may trigger a palpitation or tachycardia. I've noticed that holding my breath and bending over when pregnant (or sadly when not pregnant too LOL) often triggers my tachycardia, usually in concert with caffeine, stress, or sugar.

If you are experiencing tachycardia, DON'T PANIC. That only makes it worse. I know it is SO SCARY but I have had tachycardia (I have SVT) probably 50 times over the last 15 years and I haven't died yet. There are a couple of tricks you can try to try to get it to go away. Firstly, you can douse your face and neck in very cold water. This helps to slow down your heartbeat and when your heart slows down it makes it easier for the electrical signal to straighten out again. Another thing you can try is either attempting to go #2 or just bearing down like you are. This is called the Valsalva maneuver and is actually recommended by cardiologists. Even if these two things don't work right away, simply laying down and remaining calm WILL make it go away usually within a few minutes.

OBVIOUSLY you need to go to your doctor and get checked out. But if you're home alone with your kids and having tachycardia, it's not like you can (nor should you) hop in the car and drive yourself to the emergency room. There are a few actual medical situations like thyroid, anemia, and preeclampsia that can cause these problems and so you should def. get checked out ASAP, even that same day if possible. If (after you've had it checked) it lasts longer than a few minutes, you should go to the hospital regardless, because they can give you medication that can stop it and it is hard on your body. And at any point if you faint, feel like you cannot breathe, are having chest pains or pressure or squeezing in your chest, get very dizzy or lightheaded (a little lightheadedness is normal), turn blue/gray (check your fingertips if you aren't sure), or break out in a cold sweat, DIAL 911 right away.

But by far the most likely thing is that this is simply a temporary issue that was triggered by pregnancy and once you have your baby, it will go away again and never return.

:heart:Heart murmurs and valve problems - Sometimes a doctor will notice a heart murmur, or a clicking sound that can indicate valve problems, during pregnancy. He/she may comment on it to you and may want you to have it checked by a cardiologist. DON'T PANIC.

 What are they - A murmur/click is just the heart making an unexpected noise. Remember, your heart is beating faster and you have more blood than you normally do. This may cause your heart to sound a bit different. It may be absolutely nothing at all and your doctor is just being very careful with your health (always a good sign in a doctor).

Some of us have very, very tiny abnormalities with our hearts. These may be things that we were born with or that developed with age. They may be very small holes in our hearts or heart valves that don't quite close all the way. The additional blood flow of pregnancy simply made these very small problems more noticeable. The vast, vast majority of people with murmurs and clicks are perfectly healthy and will live to a ripe old age.

Only a very, very small percentage of people actually have issues caused by murmurs or leaky valves. In practically all of these cases, there is a LOT of advance warning and other symptoms going on, like breathlessness, fainting, turning blue, severe fatigue...most people are aware since childhood of their serious murmurs. For others, their heart valves may have worn out over the course of time but that is normal and takes many years to get bad enough for action to be taken. (I have a mitral valve prolapse and a leaky aortal valve and was given a clean bill of health for a 5th pregnancy). If your doctor notices a heart murmur or click while you're pregnant, it is almost certainly NOTHING to be worried about. It was probably there to begin with and pregnancy just made it more easily noticed.

:heart:What to do about it - You don't need to do anything about it. If your doctor advised you to go get it checked out, do so. Don't be scared about it, don't jump to the conclusion that you're going to die and leave your children motherless. These are very small, usually meaningless findings that will likely have no impact on your future health. They may completely disappear after you have the baby anyway.

Eat right and exercise, that's the best thing that all of us can do for our hearts!!

I had the rapid heart rate with dd. The whole pregnancy. Scared the crap out of me. I never experienced it with any of my boys.

I had a murmur when I was pregnant with dd and had to have some tests done. It turned out to be pregnancy related but it was scary at the time.

I also use to have palpitations when I was planning my wedding. LOL:wink:

I saw in previous posts that Atomic you had issues with drinking diet drinks i think?and had rapid heart beats but couldnt find the posts so i posted here i was wondering your thoughts? You also have this while not pregnant too right?and just to update i stopped wine and chocolate and diet drinks and i havent had ANY episodes since so im pretty sure its one of those im just too scared to introduce one to see which it is:nails: it just scares the life out of me,but im leaning towards it being the diet drinks although i was drinking coke zero so caffeine wasnt the issue.

I have a rapid heart rate this pregnancy too! This is the first time I've ever had this and it's my first girl....strange! I'm normally around 60-65 bpm but I'm up to 80-90bpm lately. It kinda scared me but I feel normal otherwise.

Sorry I just saw this, I don't always check this section so if you have a q then PM me and let me know it's here.
I suspect it's the wine and the caffeine because both those things are triggers for me whether or not I'm pregnant.
Did they tell you if you have SVT or not? It's very common and they can actually fix it if it really starts to interfere with life.

The issue I had with the Splenda and my heart was that it did make my heart rate increase and gave me what felt like panic attacks. It didn't feel the same as my "normal" tachycardia LOL. It was almost like it affected me mentally, not just physically, while the tachycardia is just physical.

Oh and not sure if you knew this SS but I don't think it's ever a good idea to drink more than 2-3 diet drinks per day anyway.

It was just Splenda that gave me the anxiety attacks, not aspartame.

I have PVC's that were discovered during my first pregnancy. My doctor says I probably always had them but just never noticed them before. Apparently, they are super common.

I've had this with all my pregnancies... I was also told that I do probably have a slight heart murmur but it's more noticeable during pregnancy with the increased blood flow. I would get blurred vision, it was very scary.

I am like you Hobbermittens, I get ectopic (skipped) beats during pregnancy and breastfeeding. My main trigger seems to be sleep deprivation! I used to work night shifts which didn't help. Nothing like trying to help someone who has called an ambulance and you are looking at them thinking "Hey, I am sicker than you are, let me get on the stretcher!"

I read this thread once before but forgot about it and I suddenly remembered it - I'm practically crying to have remembered it! Yesterday while driving home from work I had a really scary experience where my heart felt weird and I felt funny in my head and I had to pull over and I've had it several times since. I've been convinced that there's something terrible wrong and that I'm going to die, particularly after the DVT scare last week which has left me a worrying mess.

I can't figure out if my heart is speeding up, slowing down or missing a beat but it's only for a moment or two and when it happens I get a weird head rush. I went to the midwife when I got home last night and she said everything is fine with both me and the baby so my second thought is that I'm losing my marbles! I think if this is still happening after the weekend I'll go to the doctor and ask to have my heart specifically looked at but I am so reassured by this thread. It's weird that it keeps happening when I'm driving. I wondered whether sitting down without moving position might be restricting my blood flow further than it otherwise would be. When I had my ultrasound on the arteries in my legs last week I had to shift off my bottom because the reading was so poor when the baby was sitting on them. I also woke with this feeling a few times during the night. I've also been getting pins and needles in my hands after I've been driving.

I started taking a pre-natal again this week after not having them for quite a few weeks and I had been wondering whether there's a connection. I'm only really taking them for the Vitamin D (and iron I guess but my iron levels are historically very good - don't suppose that's necessarily the case now though!). If B vitamins might be contributing to this other business perhaps I'll just buy the iron and vit d separately. Atomic - if you're reading this do you have any thoughts on this?

Right, I'm going to enjoy the evening and celebrate the fact that I'm probably not going to die just yet. Seriously, I've been kissing my children at bedtime and crying my eyes out at the thought of leaving them. What a twit!

Is it coincidence that this is happening with my girl and didn't happen with my boys? I would definitely not have had 4 babies if the first 3 had made me feel this awful!

I just had a full Tachycardia blood screen done today. I freaked out at work the other night when it started; I don't remember getting it on any of my last pregnancies. I was beginning to think there was some kind of gas leak in my building. I am missing more than half of my thyroid so they did a screening on that as well. I don't get to sleep at night at home (I work 3rd shift) and the 1 night I did get to sleep in bed it was so bad I was convinced something was majorly wrong and I couldn't sleep! I am talking to my work about going on days, I'm too exhausted now to continue to work 3rd shift and with these new issues arising, I'm a nervous wreck about miscarrying again!

It's all so worrying isn't it? I went to my doctor this morning and this thread was so much more informative than he was! He's not at all worried because my chest sounds find and my blood pressure is normal and is just chalking it down to one of those pregnancy things - he suggested I tried to relax a bit more and drive a bit less! He said I could have an ECG if I wanted but that he wasn't concerned so I'm going to see how it goes over the next few days and if it continues I'll get that done. I have next week off work so hopefully that will help!

Zana - I do totally think it could be connected to the B vitamins. They make my heart freak out. At the same time tho I have always had a peak in heart irritability at 5 months that then kind of got better until I delivered, so maybe you're just having your own peak at 6 months??

The other thing to be aware of is holding your breath. You may not even realize you are doing it (I didn't) but it triggers the skipped beats. I wonder if you subconsciously hold your breath sometimes when you're driving.

What you're describing sounds to me like skipped beats and that is exactly how it feels for me too, right down to the head rush afterwards. Very normal in pregnancy - I know it's easy for me to say but I have been there!!! The more you stress about it, the worse it gets.

I do think it's coincidence you're getting it with your girls and not your boys because I got it with all four of my boys! Also when I'm not pregnant at times as well. Hang in there - the odds are the ECG would not find anything anyway (they will then want to give you a "king of hearts" monitor to wear for several weeks and it's a PITA) and when they do find a skipped beat, they will tell you it is normal anyway and not do anything about it! I had to do the king of hearts twice and sent them so many skipped beats it was ridiculous (the first time they made me bring it back after only 3 days because they were annoyed with me pushing the button so often) and they were all normal. :/

I am unaware of any blood screen that they can do for tachycardia. They actually have to witness the electrical problem with your heart on an ECG or other heart monitor before they will diagnose it and it can be really challenging because it never seems to happen when you're there at the doc's office. Took them 15 years to finally witness mine!

It will be ok tink, it's almost certainly just lack of sleep, thyroid, and stress.

Well, that's just weird then. My nurse put down tachycardia as the reason for my blood test, now I'm wondering what the heck they're looking for! I'll call tomorrow for my results. I know they have to check my thyroid levels so maybe that's the test and the "reason" was tc. UGH, just wish to get past these first 3 months so things will "normal out".

The weird thing is, I've always had an issue with electricity and my body. I put out an abnormal amount of it, I can't wear watches, and you should see what happens with me an electronics :( so any kind of increase in electrical patterns in my system are crazy.

Thank you. I hate that most of it (thyroid) is gone, it's made baby-making darn near impossible, and so far this has been the oddest start over my last 3 pregnancies. Between exhaustion and dizziness, fear of another m/c, and overall worry, I'm a wreck. Even hubby noticed it. Gonna be a long 9 months :) no more laying on my side, also seems to trigger it. Seems like at 6 weeks, it's started much earlier than expected.

I can't rem. if I included this in my essay or not but laying on my left side made my heart get worse, too. Doctors tell people to do this but for some of us it's just not good.

I hope it tapers off for you soon.

thankyou for this post atomic....i suffer from this and I had no idea this is a fairly common condition!!! Just a tip i wanted to share...I get horrible tachycardia when I take prenatals and B6 (even when not pregnant) and so i always take them right before going to bed....that helps with the dizziness....

tinksmagic, I only have 1/2 a thyroid as well. Was yours removed recently? I had a lump in mine during my last pregnancy and they took it out after the baby was born.

Zana, I wonder if the baby is just compressing arteries or something? I remember during on of my pregnancies feeling woozy when I lay in certain positions and the Dr. said it was because of that. Also, I have gotten carpel tunnel during pregnancy, and I am getting it already this time, and that causes a lot of hand tingling and numbness.

Hobbermittens, mine was removed in '98. I went in for a physical to have my wisdom teeth out and within 20 seconds of starting, the doctor found a tumor. After several attempts to remove it without surgery, they had to go in. It was then they realized it was worse than they first thought. To date, my levels have been fine, but it took 2 and 8 years after the removal to get preggers naturally (shock to us). I freaked out over the thought of a scar, but my doctor was awesome and you wouldn't even know it's there unless you knew to look. :)

Wow, I am glad they got yours! Scary, isn't it? Mine was precancerous, and they only found it through u/s. I am thankful that I was pregnant at the time, and they noticed my TSH levels were crazy with a blood test. I had no symptoms, and if it weren't for my baby, I may never have known it was there until it was too late!
