Do you get your doctor to do a 12 week ultrasound? At my clinic and most I know only do a scan at 18-20 weeks, that is all that is covered. I see sooo many people with 12 week scans and just wonder why they had them. I really want to be able to do the skull and nub theory on mine but I won't be able to have one done...poo poo. haha

Most women elect for a NT scan which is done late first trimester. I bet if you ask your ob you can get one.

We have one now that's mandatory at 12 weeks to date the baby then the 18-20 week scan. No others unless there is concern about baby's size which they normally do 34-36 weeks x

nuchal translucency screening

It is the standard of care where I live and everyone gets one. They do bloodwork and a scan.

Where I live they don't do them either so I am going to go to an elective ultrasound facility and pay to have it done.

hmmm wow I don't think my Dh would like paying for an unnecessary ultrasound :-/

It's not unnecessary. It is a scan to check for abnormalities. It's for health reasons.

Standard practice here too ..to have a 12 week scan.

sorry, it's not unnecessary for those lucky enough to get them but they are deemed unnecessary here where I live. I think it would be better to have a 12 week scan over a 20 week.

Its standard here too, i would have throught it would have been done everywhere. Check this out and maybe take it to your midwife and say you want it done?? Nuchal translucency screening | BabyCenter (http://www.babycenter.com/0_nuchal-translucency-screening_118.bc)

I SO wanted one too, and was looking forward to it....but my doc said "unless there is a problem, they don't do them until 20 weeks" I begged him to do a scan before then so tmw is the big day! This is my rainbow baby and I am so excited to see them! After that though I will hopefully be booking a private scan with DH in a week or so...

NT scan isn't everywhere. Apparently it started here in bc way later than the other side of Canada in Quebec! But it has saved tons of money and lowered the need for amnio's by about 60%!! I'm glad I got to get one this time!!

I hope I get one, the doc has told me he doesn't know how to get one from their machine but that he would learn before my appt... oh goodie.
Aww did you ask her why she made them? Dreams or feelings?
You are almost there babe! The next two weeks will FLY! Just stay busy and do things you enjoy.
I hope you don't have to go through GD and that you are carrying your GIRL!

Thanks!:) but I won't be finding out til birth. I don't want to feel dissaponted if it's not what I'm wanting to hear and have that guilt carry through til birth! Plus, I've never waited so it's actually kinda fun at the same time as killing me!!!

I was just asked if I wanted it done or not and said yes.

hmmm I wonder if I would ask about it what the doctor would say. Have to wait a few more weeks though to even see the doctor. Where I live unless you have issues you don't even see a doc until 12 weeks along and then only once a month from there until the last month. We have a scan at 20 weeks and that's it. The only time you get earlier scans is if you don't know conception date which is why I am getting one and if you have history of miscarriage or suspected multiples.

okay wait wait wait....I remember always being offered a 1st trimester screening in my pregnancies. I always turned them down. Is that the 12 week scan?! I always thought they did an amnio so I never wanted the screening. I had no idea it included an ultrasound.

August 20th, 2012, 04:24 PM
Well if it's like here the early screening is blood tests and u/s. the amino would still be your choice and only if your results were indicating a problem!! Just ask and see what it involves:)

The NT scan....blood work is a standard first trimester test that's available to everyone.....I had to request mine. The "norm" here is anatomy and NT at 16-30 but if you have the combined screening the results are better when they can compare NT and bliodwork between both first and second trimester. NT scans measure the pocket of fluid beneath baby's neck which can get thick if there are abnormalities such as Edwards or downs....its performed between 11weeeks and I "think" 13 weeks 6 days and NO later for a "good" screen. The reason the nub shows so well in SOME shots (not mine lol) is because the tech HAS to get that side profile with spine level.
Ask your doctor.....its your right as a patient and mother to have the option. Tell doc you have done some research and to out your mind at ease you "like to have a combined first trimester scan" if your younger than 35 he may ask "why" your worried.....but ALL moms worry matter the age and he can either try to convince u that u "dont need it" or schedule you. Cant hurt to ask! :)

That should read 16-20 not 16-30!!!

I think I may still pass on it all. Hubby reminded me yesterday I thought we didn't want to know the sex until birth...all these ultrasounds give clues and ruin the surprise. We shall see.
