Saw palmetto and vitex together and how far in advance??

OK so I am sure if I kept searching I could find the answer on here but with 3 kids running around that's almost impossible.

I am doing everything in my power to sway girl in our attempt in a few weeks/months and wanted to know how far in advance should I start taking these two supplements, how much of them, and are they OK to take together??? I am not on any form of BC except condoms so it wouldn't be mixing with anything other than folic acid and baby aspirin.

If anyone knows please let me know.......

Hi! :)

Vitex can be taken ASAP, 800mg each day for the first 14 days of your cycle. It does do "stuff" to your cycle, so I'd suggest going on that for a couple of months before ttc..

Saw palmetto is, recommended by Atomic, not to be taken prior to six weeks before attempt. I think it's a 320mg supp, taken once a day, but don't quote me on that..

They are ok to be taken together, so no worries there. :)

I took SP for 15 days for my first attempt in Sept and found that I was still spotting at cd11 and didn't ovulate until cd20. Now, it is normal for me to ovulate that late a couple of times a year, so it could've just been co-incidence. However, the spotting concerned me the most so I only took SP from cd1-cd10 this time, still had spotting until cd10 but ovulated on cd16. Hope that helps. BTW I stayed away from Vitex as we've been TTC for a year now and I didn't want to mess around with my cycles as my hubby's at the end of his tether regarding TTC and is happy to call it a day at anytime!

Perfect, thanks so much! Only thing I'd add is we've had the best luck also taking SP the first 14 days of the cycle as well - some have taken it the full 6 weeks, but I think 2 w on, 2 w off, 2 w on, then attempt is a great way to do it.

Hey Atomic I am trying to conceive in April 2013 so It's coming up fast and you told me to do Vtex and SP so when do you think is a good idea to start them? Also I was gonna take Zyrtec and give hubby sudafed but he will be on cranberry is that okay?

I am taking Vitex but ditched SP as it delayed ovulation from CD17 (average) to CD26 - sticking with the vitex though to sway. I did only take SP for one cycle (days 1-17) so maybe I should have stuck with it a bit longer - just couldnt bear another 40 day cycle!

I think you're supposed to stop the sp before you Ov or cd14 (whichever comes first) :) I had a major delay in my Ov too with my first sp cycle.. Will see what happens this time! Cd8 today ..... Come on O day! ;)

This way, I guess, if you don't fall month 1, you can keep taking it for another couple of cycles?

But then I read what you said so I'm trying to conceive in April when do you think a good time to start Vitex and then when do I start sp? thx for your help.

I agree with hopingforsaskia. I am pretty sure Atomic recommends starting your supplements 6 weeks before your attempt. So you would start it the first day of your period the month before your attempt. So you would take it from AF-0 then stop a day or so before you ovulate. Then start it again once you get your next period and take it up until a few days before ovulation then attempt to TTC that cycle. Does that make sense?

Vitex - if it were me, I would start that a few months before attempt month - AF-O of January or something, and the SP in the cycle for March - AF-O. (Just like peanut said. :) )

Hi, I hope this isn't hijacking, but can I ask what brand of SP you found in Australia? I saw two at the chemist this morning, but both had nettle and one also contained zinc, which I gather is not ideal for a pink sway? I think they were Blackmores (proserens?) and Nature's Something-or-other.. Oh and they both are sold as purely prostate support, so I expect I'll get some funny looks at the check out!

I stopped taking it. I'm having problems conceiving this time around, so I just started seeing a fertility specialist...I'm also older.

Peb, just make sure you don't take it after ovulation...can cause problems for male babies. It can also delay O.

If starting in April, you could start the V in March or even Feb. SP I would start in March.

DH seems to be able to handle Sudafed better, just give him one and not many doses.

Stop the SP at CD 12 or 13 rather than going all the way to CD 17 - that's why O was so late.

Before FIRST attempt!! If it takes you some months after you start it to get pg, that's going to add up to longer than 6 weeks on it.

I don't want anyone starting it like a year in advance, 6 weeks is enough, but you can keep taking it while TTC even if it's longer than the 6 weeks out.

Should i start to use saw palmetto in september af-o and again in october af-o and ttc in october? Is it ok take it together with vitex and when should i start to use vitex? Is it enough in september af-o?

You can take Vitex and saw palmetto together. Do not mix SP with peppermint tea, though.

Yes, if you want to take V and SP you would take them AF-CD 12-14 (at your preference) or positive OPK, whichever comes first, for the two cycles and then TTC to catch the ovulation in the second cycle.
