View Full Version : Twin nub guessing at 11 weeks...not feeling optimistic *UPDATE pg.5 with 13w pics*

I had an elective u/s tonight at 11w1d. We didn't even expect the tech to guess, as we were only going so that we could get some clear shots of the babies to bring to Thanksgiving on Thursday. No one knows we're pregnant yet, let alone having twins, except for our parents.
Anyway, the tech was great and got lots of good shots of the babies, even some in 3D, which we weren't expecting. Then the owner of the place came in, and they both were examining the shots and talking to each other about how it seems like they could give a good guess on the babies' genders. They said it would be just a guess, as it was so early, but they were pretty sure that Baby A was a girl, and that Baby B was a boy. In fact, they said they'd be shocked if Baby B was anything but a boy - they said he had a very clear boy nub.
I was totally okay with thinking I'd get one of each, even though I'd love two girls. But then things took a turn for the worse, and suddenly, they weren't sure about Baby A being a girl anymore. They said the nub looked flat in some shots, then slightly angled in others. They looked and looked, and then finally decided that they really couldn't tell with Baby A, but were pretty sure Baby B was a boy.
I am feeling so deflated. I'm very worried that even after everything I've done to sway, that I have two boys growing inside me. I'm holding out hope that at least Baby A is a girl....but I don't know how much of a chance I have now.
Here are some shots of the babies....

Baby B

What do you think? Can you even see any nubs in these pictures? It was a lot clearer during the ultrasound session, maybe I should have bought the CD. I have another question too - once a nub is rising, or if it's "slightly raised," there's no chance of it going down, right? I mean, at this stage, all nubs are pretty flat, and then rise if they're boys, right? I admit I'm not great at the nub theory, and I do realize it's very, very early to even be obsessing about this....but I feel like all my hope for ever having a girl has just been totally squashed.
ETA: I know this probably means nothing, but Baby A's heartbeat has always been very high, higher than the other baby's. It's been in the high 170's since 6 weeks, and today it was 169. Baby B's heartbeat has also been very high, but in the high 160's. Today it was 164. DS1 and DS2's heartbeats were always in the 140's to 150's. I don't know it that really means anything, though. Just grasping at straws, I think...

Yes, I already have an early gender determination scan set up for December 16th, I'll be 15 weeks then. I was fine waiting until then, but the nub guesses they've given me tonight are making me super worried. :(
Oh, and I'll also have an NT scan at 13 weeks, on December 3rd. I know they won't say a word about gender there, as I've been to that place before for my previous NT scans, and they won't even breathe a word about gender there. But maybe I'll have some clearer nub shots by then.
Just wanted to hear what you girls thought about these nubs. Once they've risen, or are on the rise, all hope is lost for a girl...right? Or could they still flatten out after 11 weeks? Not likely, huh?

sweetpea, I'd bet my bottom dollar that baby a turns out to be a girl. The skull on baby A is sooo classic girl skull (I know others don't buy into the theory) but I also get a very strong girl vibe from A. I think the nub looks flat and girly as well...I am predicting you will get confirmation of A being a girl.
Baby B has a boy skull, do you see at all how it's more round than A's? I cannot see nub but just the skull alone has me pretty convinced that B is a boy too, but I can't tell on the nub on B.
Please do not lose hope! I still think u got one girly in there!

Thanks for your input, NBP. :) Do you think that at this point, it truly could go either way, with either baby? Even with the raised/rising nubs?

Thank you for your input too, auroara. :) I sure hope you're right. Before you even said anything, I did notice while looking at my scans last night that the skull shapes looked a bit different from each other. I, too, get a girly vibe from Baby A. I just hope it's not wishful thinking that's making me say that.
I really wish, with all the nub guessing the techs were doing last night, that they would have included better nub shots in the pictures they gave me. This is going to drive me crazy for the next two weeks, until my NT scan.
And the worst part is that I was really excited to tell our family about the pregnancy tomorrow at Thanksgiving, but I feel like the wind was just taken out of my sails, and I can't shake this "bummed" feeling. I hope I can shake this feeling off, and get excited again. It's hard though, when all I can think about is that I might be going from 2 boys, to 4 boys in just a few months. :(
Anyway, thanks for listening, everyone. I'll take more guesses, if anyone has any. Oh, and if you're a member at IG and would like to share the pics there, please feel free. I'll take all the guesses I can get. Thanks, ladies...

Sweetpea , I just wanted to let you know that a few times when looking ar confirmed nubs recently I've seen ones that got all boy guesses and were boyish ones early , turn out to be girls. It's prob not the norm but it is early so anything is still possible !
I never understood skull theory but can def see the difference in baby a and baby b's skulls! Fx baby a is a girl!

"Prenatal gender assignment by ultrasound has a high accuracy rate at 12 to 14 weeks. At 11 weeks there was an error rate of 50% and only 14/100 assigned correct male gender. In the male fetuses after 12 weeks, there was a significant increase in the angle of the genital tubercle from the horizontal. The accuracy of sex determination increased with gestation."

Wow I am so surprised that a tech would guess at 11weeks 1 day. It just seems so early and there is so much room for error at that gestation. The fact that he did not seem aware of that and was still happy to do a nub guess at that gestation actually suggests to me that he is not very knowledgeable about nub theory... maybe he thinks he knows a lot more than he actually does. I think there is still a lot of hope for you as your sway was AWESOME! It would be one of the great injustices of the world if you ended up with 2 boys after such a fantastic sway! I hope that you are not too tortured over the next few weeks until you can get a better guess, and that you get lots of joy from sharing your news.

Thank you all so much for your encouraging words, it's really helping to give me hope still and relax me a bit. :agree:
I also want to clarify something - I didn't go to this ultrasound appointment for gender determination. I knew that 11 weeks was WAY too early to tell, and didn't even ask for a gender guess. The reason for this appt was because we were going to be sharing the news with family on Thanksgiving, and wanted really good pictures of the babies to take with us. My OB had given me only a couple really crappy pictures (you coudn't even make out anything), and while I know it was frivolous, we had paid for a tiny little package, JUST to have some good shots. I made it clear that I didn't expect a gender guess, especially as I have an appt for an early gender scan at 15 weeks, but that I was only looking to have some good pics to bring to Thanksgiving.
Anyway, having said that, once I was in the room, the tech and the owner of the company were both watching the babies, and I guess what happened was, according to them, the two nubs were SO distinctly different, that they gave me a very loose, "off the record" kind of guess that they were a girl and a boy. The owner even said that she really, really hesitates to even venture a guess this early and that it wasn't at all something we should bank on, but the two just seemed to obviously opposite of each other that she thought perhaps it was a girl and a boy. But then, that's when the "girl" baby seemed to start looking more boy to them at a different angle, and then at that point she really, really wasn't sure what sex that baby was going to be. But she did say that she would be shocked if Baby B was anything but a boy - she said the nub was just so clearly a boy nub.
Either way, I just wanted to clear that up. I wasn't paying for a gender ultrasound at 11 weeks, and she was very nice - I highly doubt she would have even agreed to a scan that early if I was looking for gender (she says she starts gender determination scans at 14 weeks). I made it clear when booking the appt that I was only looking for some good pics of the babies to take with me to Thanksgiving dinner, and I was really surprised when she said she'd like to venture a guess at the sex of the babies. I probably should have just said no, that I'll wait for the 15 week scan, but curiosity just got the better of me. :)

Just wanted to hear what you girls thought about these nubs. Once they've risen, or are on the rise, all hope is lost for a girl...right? Or could they still flatten out after 11 weeks? Not likely, huh?
Can't see nubs in these pictures but just wanted to let you know our baby girl had a risen angle. I think it was about 22-25 degrees I worked it out at. I was sure she was a boy and when I had my 20 week scan on a very high tech machine and was told girl I nearly fell off the bed. I spoke to my consultant who said this sonographer never says unless she is 100% sure of gender and then 4 weeks later I had another scan on a different machine with him and looked at the potty shots and it is definitely a girl despite the appearance of my nub shot early on. Please don't give up hope of getting your girl, it is too early to tell.

Sorry guys, I failed to mention that my scan was later in the day. I just got home. I got some shots, and the babies are much bigger, but I don't know if the nubs are very clear. I'm about 95% sure that baby B is a boy...not so sure about baby A. They gave me a disc of all the shots, so I'm going to have to figure out how to get them off the disc and post them. Give me a little bit...still have to get kids down for a nap too...I'll be back soon, but wanted to at least give this quick update...

Thanks, NBP! I'm working on getting the pics onto my computer right now so I can share them here. Hopefully the nubs are clear enough for a good guess. Baby B is, to me at least, pretty obviously a boy. Thinking *maybe* girl for Baby A, but really not sure. Feeling really scared right now, as I'm pretty sure I'm going to be a mom of at least 3 boys...maybe 4. Holding onto hope that just one is a girl, I would be totally happy with that (please, God!). Anyway, I'd love to hear what others think...
Oh, and I did want to add some stats: Both babies are measuring at 13 weeks, so right on track. They're both 3 inches CRL, and both have heart rates of 160 bpm. Baby A was moving around, but pretty calm; Baby B was wild! It was amazing to watch them on the screen, I could never tire of seeing my babies during an ultrasound, it's such an awesome experience. :awe:
Ok, off to work on getting these pics uploaded here...

Sorry about that, I just posted the whole thread and then noticed that all my personal info was still on the pics (oops!) so I had to re-do the post.
Anyway...here are the pics. I hope I'm finally doing it right now, and the pics aren't too big or anything. After reviewing these again myself, I am almost certain that Baby B is a boy. I'm thinking Baby A *might* be a girl, but maybe I'm just desperate and grasping at straws. There's one shot of Baby A that looks kind of girly to me, BUT he/she looks like they're stretching (the spine doesn't look at all curved, like the baby is stretching out), so I don't know if that affects the accuracy of the nub angle or not. What do you think?
Here is Baby B. For some reason, I got a lot of profile shots of Baby B, but not so many of Baby A. Let me know what you think...
6884
6885
6886
6887
And here is Baby A. There are only two good profile shots of this baby, so hopefully we can determine something from these. Like I said above, I'm really worried about the fact that the only good girly nub I see is when the baby looks to be stretched out (unless I'm wrong, but it looks to me like the baby is stretching). I don't know if this skews the accuracy of nub guessing or not. Anyway...let me know what you think...

Well, at 13w6d, I'd love to see a potty shot. Baby A is stretching which could be flattening the nub a bit but it doesn't have a bump in that bottom pic and is really even and forked so I am going with girl for Baby A. If you have any additional images it could be helpful to see more views. Baby B looks like a clear bump to me and I bet the potty shot would look like a boy there.
I'm not certain. Just my best guess. Without a video, it's hard to be any kind of certain with these shots.

December 3rd, 2012, 08:03 PM
Thanks for your response, NBP! :agree: I agree that it's hard to tell about Baby A, since he/she seemed to be stretching in that shot. And I just went through all of the pics again, and there are no other nub shots of Baby A - just these two. What do you think about the other shot of Baby A, the one that he/she doesn't seem to be stretching in?

Thank you for your reply, lovemy4! I hope you're right! I'm so mad that I didn't speak up and ask for a better shot of Baby A's nub. I can't believe that those two shots are the only ones I got, and the baby is stretching...but then got 4 shots of Baby B, all of which clearly show that he's a boy.

I can't guess but I do have a general observation about twins, I know 3 women with twins born in the past year, and all of them have twin girls. I don't know any other couples with twins other than my mum's friend who had a boy/girl combo. It just seems 2 x girls are more common than 1 of each, or 2 x boy.
This seems to back up this theory:

Not sure, but as a guess. Twin A leaning Girl and Twin B thinking boy. They do look a bit diff, but then looking back at my scan pic's until they were 16wks+ if I was a stranger having a guess, I wouldn't perhaps say both girls. So I'd say it's looking good you have one little pretty PINK baby in there and perhaps a handsome brother to look out for her? xx

sorry, I'd guess 2 boys as I think A has quite an angle of nub in the bottom pic... but I really hope you have a girl in there. Will you be having a gender scan?

At 13 weeks I'd expect more of an angle for baby a if it was a boy and the back looks a little arched. I guess girl for a and boy for b

I thought Baby A's nub looked girly but I'm not sure at all about Baby B - Sorry.
11 weeks is super early though, either way, good luck :)
Just looked at the 13 week photos (sorry I missed them the first time) and I do think Baby B is a boy.

I'm sticking to my gut feeling which says A is a girl, B is a boy, and the nub shots, while not great for A, are keeping me convinced that A is surely a girl. :agree:

I can't guess but I do have a general observation about twins, I know 3 women with twins born in the past year, and all of them have twin girls. I don't know any other couples with twins other than my mum's friend who had a boy/girl combo. It just seems 2 x girls are more common than 1 of each, or 2 x boy.
This seems to back up this theory:
Twin Gender Statistics - In-Gender.com (http://www.in-gender.com/cs/forums/p/28182/257304.aspx)
Thank you! I'll have to go check out that link. NBP posted something similar about the likelihood of twin genders a few pages back, too. :agree:

Yes, I have my official 18 week scan set up for January 8th. However, I had an elective early gender determination scan scheduled at a private place for December 16th, that I've now moved up to this Thursday evening. This tech is supposed to be really good, so hopefully she'll be able to shed some light on what genders the babies are!

Thank you all for your replies! I appreciate every single guess. :agree: I scheduled a private scan for this Thursday evening (7pm EST), so hopefully I can find out more. I am on pins and needles, and although I'm ashamed to admit this, I broke down and cried a little bit today (stupid hormones, ha!). This is my last chance at ever having a daughter, so I am really, really hoping and praying that Baby A turns out to be a girl.
Anyway, I'm welcoming any and all guesses! Keep 'em coming ladies! ;)
PS: And if anyone has ever seen a (later confirmed girl or boy) nub shot where the baby was stretching, please do share! I keep going back and forth on Baby A's nub shot...feeling optimistic, then later feeling hopeless...bc the baby is stretching and it's so hard to tell the angle in this pic.

Hey sweetpea - since you guessed on my photos I'll give it my best guess on your updated ones... but please take it with a grain of salt! I probably don't know what I'm saying! But I've stared at so many nubs now because of obsessing over my own that I have seen patterns, but hey... you know... I'm still not very good! :P
Baby B looks boy to my untrained eyes.
Baby A I'm giving a lean to girl, mainly because of remaining questioning of the arch of the back and whether or not that'd even affect much at 13+ weeks, however the nub seems different in that it looks forked almost from what I understand about forked nubs and in general the lines seem different then Baby B's...
Fingers crossed. I think the statistics others have posted would put things on your side, but if it does happen to be two boys... and considering they are less common compared to other gender combinations of fraternal twins - that would be special, too.

Thank you, suregena! :) I really appreciate your detailed guess! :agree: And I really, really hope you're right. As I'm sure many do on this site, I'm just going crazy, wanting to know! I really hope we both get our girls - your baby's nub looks SO promising, I'd pretty much be shocked if you didn't have a girl cooking in there! ;)

Here's hoping... I have 1 week to go... ugh. I WILL be happy with a boy... but all this gender obsessing I got myself into when stumbling on this website I think has done stuff to me... hahah. I just read a thread of a lady on here who had ALL very sure girl nub guesses and the nub WAS flat (but didn't see a fork in it or anything... which I don't even know if that means anything since boys supposedly can have those too?) but she updated it was a boy.
So you just never know. It's hard to not be completely obsessed... I'm crossing fingers for both of us! <3

Omg I'll be stalking this thread on Thursday then! So exited for you! Remember than twins is almost even more special than getting a girl, so even if it were two boys you will still have a very special time. But I think it's a boy and a girl.

I'm located on the East Coast of the United States. My appt is this Thursday at 7:00 pm EST (I'm not sure what that would be in your time). I usually pop on here several times of the day/evening/night, mostly a quick check of my buddy group via Tapatalk on my phone, so that's why I happen to be on when people from the UK or Australia are too. ;)

Oh geez, I am really obsessing now....oy....
I just found these two threads, where the nub (in my opinion) looks similar to my Baby A's nub, and both of their babies turned out to be girls (even despite quite a few boy guesses). I'm wondering if you ladies think these nubs look similar to my Baby A's nub?

Turtle guessed boy for me, based on the angle. :( Ugh, I'm getting so many mixed guesses! I haven't tallied them up, but I'd suspect that between here, IG, and babycenter, the guesses are probably around 50/50 or close to it. This is so nerve-wracking!

There's only 3 guesses on the BC post - 2 boy guesses, and 1 not sure. However, I tallied up the GD and IG guesses, just because I'm nuts and obsessing like crazy. :p On GD, I got 12 girl guesses and 2 boy guesses. And on IG, I got 8 girl guesses and 2 boy guesses. So, out of those three message boards, I've got mostly girl guesses, but I'm totally not convinced. The fact that the baby is stretching, and thus making the angle of the nub possibly not quite as accurate, is making me really worried that I'll hear blue, despite mostly girl guesses.
So worried...anxious...nervous...

I only posted the pic of Baby A since Baby B looks like it's definitely going to be a boy. I suppose that if you compare the two nubs, they definitely look different from each other, but I'm not sure if it works that way - I figured each baby probably develops differently, and every nub is unique to that baby, so I wasn't sure if a comparison would matter, kwim? I could be wrong, though...I don't know...I'm going crazy! haha

Here are the pics! The tech said she could see the very straight line on Baby A, indicating girl, in every position she was in. I should have paid for a DVD, but I declined in the beginning, so she didn't set up the equipment to do so. She was 100% positive Baby A was a girl though, and she looked for a long time. She said no doubt in her mind. I don't know though, after seeing these pics, should I maybe wait to announce to family and friends until our scan in January? The tech said she was 100% sure, but...I don't know, it's just too hard to believe!
Anyway, here's two pics of Baby B (BOY):

I just wanted to share that we had another ultrasound at 16 weeks this past weekend, and it was confirmed that we are indeed having boy/girl twins. :) However, the babies have switched positions, and the boy (formerly Baby "B") is now closer to the cervix, making him now Baby "A." So the girl is kind of on top of him, and has now become Baby "B." At the ultrasound, they were laying sort of head-to-toe, opposite of each other. I got some great shots of them, and I'd love to share them here....
