Hi, I'm a newbie here and came across this site yesterday. It is a VERY helpful site. Thanks for all the good info. I currently have a 2 year old boy who I love to pieces. However, I am 39 years old and am planning to try for my next child this month. It would be nice to have a boy and a girl. Although, I wouldn't send a boy back if I get preggo with that sex. However, I want to try for a girl so this way I can say at least I tried if I end up with another boy. My husband is 39 as well and has a history of kidney failure but had a transplant in 2005 and his sperm was tested in 2010 b/c we did have fertility problems back then but his sperm count was very good. I was the one with the issue whereas I am a migraine sufferer and was taking Verapamil (beta blocker) as a prevenative for my migraines and low and behold it raised my prolactin levels which kept me from getting pregnant. As soon as I stopped that medication, I took an ovulation test that month and got pregnant right away with my son.
Now, my question is...I read over the different methods to sway for a girl. I'm probably going to surge in 6 or 7 days and ovulate the following day. As a last minute method, what can I use to start trying for my girl? I was thinking the frequent release for DH (which I had him start last night; he doesn't mind...lol). Can someone explain to me what I would have to do being I will be ovulating so soon? According to the chart that is on this site, which I printed out, it looks like most of the pink swayers used a frequent release or abstinence and then did a positive OPK. I'm kind of confused about this method. Does this mean he does frequent release for the following days and I take a ovulation kit and when I find I'm ovulating, I have BD that day? If someone can please explain to me this method or if you think any other methods would be in my favor, I would appreciate it. Also, my husband is on a lot of immunosuppressants such as prednisone (2 mg per day) and a bunch of other meds that are kidney related. Not sure if this stuff would work in my favor or not? Also, he did have a very bad cold this month which gave him a fever last week of about 100 farenheit...he took Ceftin (antibiotic) to treat his cold. If anyone has any info on any of this, I'd appreciate it. I'm currently taking my prenatal vitamins, 1 mcg of folic acid per day and 4,000 units of vitamin d3 as I was diagnosed with severe deficiency in November 2012 but as of January 2013, I was within a normal range.
Appreciate any help anyone can provide. Sorry to sound so naïve..I'm so new to all of this! Thanks again!
ETA: Please correct me if I am wrong but I am under the assumption that the more Frequent releases that get done, the more a sperm count is brought down...and if you abstain for 4 days and then have BD when you surge, the sperm count is much higher. I believe this is what my husband did when I conceived my son...was abstinent for 4 days and then when I got the positive that I was ovulating from the ovulation kit, we BD that night and got preggo. I believe this sways a boy, correct? I just want to be sure I understand everything.

Please do not have your husband do ANY frequency patterns. It is not right for him. My recommendation would be to have him release on his own or with you using protection, every 4-5 days thru the cycle, yes it will make slightly more sperm than FR but I do not recommend frequency stuff for 39 year olds iwth history of health issues.
Frequency really doesn't sway by much. One attempt DOES sway pink and we've gotten 70% pink doing one attempt. So the concern is that if you do frequency + one attempt, with your husband's age and history of health problems, he's going to have nothing left by the time your attempt rolls around and you will not be able to conceive with one attempt.
Yes, you did that once before and got a boy. But there may have been many reasons why you got a boy, luck chief among them, and my recommendation would be for you to do exactly what you did last time, it's your best bet of conception with one attempt, and the one attempt does seem pretty darn important.

Thanks so much for responding! Appreciate it.
So to confirm, you are saying we should either have protected intercourse every 4 or 5 days through my entire cycle and then when I get a positive sign from the ovulation kit, I should try right away or I should wait 12 hours or the following day? I guess 1 attempt means you only do it once during that ovulation? I'm sorry but I am finding some of this terminology to be a bit confusing. I apologize.
I read the shettles version before finding your website and I was going to follow the recommendation of having unprotected intercourse like 2 days before I ovulate. However, I read on your site that the Shettles idea is not true.
I know when I conceived my son, I took the OPK and once I got the positive, I had unprotected intercourse that night and the following night. Going back to my original post about my first pregnancy, now that I think about it, I'm not sure if my dr. told us to hold off on him doing FR for 4 days before my ovulation kit coming back positive or if it was his recommendation to hold off for those amount of days when they were checking his sperm in the lab. I really can't recall.
I know when my husbands sperm count was tested in late 2010, it was excellent. It was all me that was the problem. Even his kidney doctors have reassured me that the meds he is on will not make it harder to get pregnant. I haven't officially started trying yet..personally. I want to try this month but won't be so disappointed if it doesn't happen b/c I'd like to have an end of May/beginning of June baby..personally.
However, I know you don't want him to FR b/c of his age and health conditions but can you please confirm for me that FR does lower sperm count if done like 5or 6 nights in a row?
And a man abstains from doing anything for 4 days, does that increase his sperm count?
Also, I was thinking of trying douching...never did it in my life ever. Just picked one up today. I also picked up calcium and magnesium supplements. I know I've been told in the past magnesium is good for my migraines. What is the recommended dosage to take of each of those items? I'm already on 4,000 units of D3.
Sorry again for all the questions. If you could explain the positive OPK and one time, that would be really helpful.

I agree with Atomic, just BD in order to get pregnant with 1 attempt given your situation. FR (him releasing every day for over a week) does lower sperm count, you're correct. Douching would do that too so again that would be something I'd avoid in your position.
I think your best bet would be diet (at minimum skipping breakfast and cutting back on meat -- as vegetarian as you can get), and one attempt when you get a positive OPK, and not doing jump&dump but just laying there for at least 5mins.

Thanks so much for your reply. Appreciate it. Looks like everything is going to be put on hold this month bc DH caught a cold and isn't feeling up to par to do anything. Guess I'll try next month but at least it will give me time to change some of my eating habits. I also added 1200 mg of calcium to my diet and 250 mg of magnesium. I believe those 2 supplements also swayed girl, correct? Can you tell me what amount of calcium and magnesium I should be taking each day for girl sway?
Also, I want to buy PH test strips for my cervical mucous. I suppose I wouldn't be able to find them in a local store. Can you point me in the direction of where I can find them from?
Thanks so much for your info. Appreciate it.

actually the calcium and magnesium supplements are now not thought to sway pink at all and that consuming more nutrients may actually sway blue so most pink swayers nowadays aren't taking cal+mag the calcium conundrum - CONTROVERSIAL (http://genderdreaming.com/forum/showthread.php?610-the-calcium-conundrum-CONTROVERSIAL)
if you won't be douching or anything don't bother testing pH. Honestly! the paper strips (litmus paper) you can get is rubbish and VERY hard/stressful to read so there's no point doing it if you won't be doing anything to change pH anyway. I tried them for one month and gave up when they weren't evne giving me a readable result (i.e. areas of the paper went one colour but others went different colours so no idea which was my true pH)
sorry you have to delay this month, hope he feels better soon

Thanks so much for the info. Appreciate it.
Im going to stop taking the calcium and magnesium. As for potassium after reading the article if i remember correctly, right before i got preggo with ds, i was huge orange juice drinker with breakfast. I dont have that crave for a while now. However, iim going to cut back on my vitamin d from 4000 to 1000 bc my deficient level is back to normal.
So what i am getting from this article is limit dairy, sodium and potassium intake. Id say my biggest issue now is sodium with what i normally eat. I dont eat much potassium in general and the only dairy i eat is eggs maybe 2 or 3x per week. I assume mozzarella cheese is no good either? I only started eating yogurt bc i was under the impression dairy swayed girl.
Is it ok to eat an egg 2x or 3x a week when trying for a girl? Also if i understand everything correctly, white pasta and white breadd are ok? Just wondering, where does peanut butter play a role? Is it good or bad for girl sway? Are empty calories good r in bad for say like sweets. And, is canned tuna ok and chicken 2x per week? Sorry for all the questions just trying to wrap my head around this more now since i know i will have another month to try to control my diet.
Last question..bc i noticed i had so much stretchy ewcm yesterday and the day before. I took an ovulation test yesterday and it came out positive. I took it again today bc i have such bad pains in my left ovary..and i think im def ovulating. Howeverm the opk test for came up with no lh surge today when it was positive last night. Do you know if the lh goes down when ovulating takes place..the day the egg is traveling down the fallopian tube? Now im waiting to see what cm looks like tday. Just trying to get an ide of everything.
Again, thanks for all the good info. I def wont be testing my ph now that you told me all of that.

Hi again Trishy, I posted a link in your other thread that has the LE Diet that I recommend in it, should help you figure out what to eat.
I would not have you limit potassium, the idea that potassium sways is based on the same thing that the idea calcium sways pink is. You need 2500-3500 mg of potassium a day for yoru health and it can be quite difficult to get if you start avoiding foods that have potassium. You can die from not getting enough potassium.
Same with sodium - I am not at all convinced it sways blue (may evne sway pink in high amounts) but I do keep it in the mix simply because it's doable and some people want it. I got my DD without limiting sodium after getting my 4th boy limiting it. Makes it easier to stick to diet if you keep sodium in your diet, that's for sure!
Baby needs a nap, if i don't get back to this today please give it a bump so I can come back tomorrow to reply
