View Full Version : Copper IUD or Mirena if we want a girl?

We're currently pregnant with a boy, and we're definitely going to want a girl for our next child. I've long known that I want my next birth control to be an IUD, partly for the sake of charting my cycles so that we could have the opposite for our 2nd from what we had for our 1st, partly because I didn't like what the pill was doing to my body. So does it even matter if I opt for copper or Mirena if we want to sway pink next? If it doesn't matter, I think I'm more likely to go for the copper, just because of the lack of hormones.

Mirena
Please do not put any stock into a)charting cycles in advance because your cycle virtually always changes once you start TTC, esp. if an IUD is involved and b)"doing the opposite". I can guarantee you the reason you got a boy had absolutely nothing to do with the day of your cycle you had intercourse on and "doing the opposite" will gain you nothing in terms of swaying and is just another thing to worry and obsess over.

This reminds me of something I have been wondering about to do with my copper IUD. I got it because it was the best contraception available for me without using hormones and I did not want to use natural family planning again because I want to be strict on swaying since it's our last. Anyway, since I have the copper IUD it shouldn't effect my cycles once they return because it's not putting hormones into my body right? Or can having something synthetic in my uterus effect ovulation?
The reason I ask is because from what I have researched so far I am thinking I will try for a one shot wonder so I will start charting my cycles as soon as they return even though I may not conceive for ages because I want to be an expert at pin pointing my ovulation (I have always had regular cycle lengths). The only other thing I am sure about for now is doing the LE diet for at least three months prior to TTC. Could I assume that once I take out my IUD nothing will change in my body since it is non-hormonal and I could TTC as soon as it comes out?
Thanks Atomic

I found this article (I'm sure theres a 1000 others:))
Return to fertility after discontinuati - PubMed Mobile (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/3213675/)
But fertility can take a while to return even after the copper removal, plus it mentios how the gender split afterwards goes up to 62/38 in favor of boys, this may be due to people trying to improve their condition due to lack of ov so swaying boy without realising?
Of the 42 newborns with known gender, 26 (61.90%) were male and 16 (38.10%) were female. Whether this decidedly above-normal male to female ratio at birth of 162.50 (against a norm of 105-106) was a consequence of previous copper IUD use merits further study.
Would yo be able to swap to the mirena 1+2+3boys?

I had mirena for almost the complete 5 years I got it taken out and got pregnant with ds3 right away... I am a true boy maker tho ;)
I hated the flipping thing... But I only realized I hated it when I got it taken out... I realized that it made me a raging borderline psycho... I had migraines daily...I constantly was bloated and such... I did however love not getting my period and if I did it was literally a couple spots... also when I got it take. Out I felt sooo weird for 4 or 5 days like really fidgety and such
Just my experience

Thanks for that ELP. Very interesting. I will not swap, I love my Copper IUD. It is like I am not doing anything to not get pregnant. Perhaps I can get it removed a few months or more prior to conceiving and use condoms around the time of ovulation until we are ready to get pregnant

I wouldn't assume any of those things, we just don't know enough to say. The copper IUDs actually make your body make fluids that are different than what it normally makes and we don't know what happens after the IUD is removed - does your body keep making those fluids and do they sway blue or pink...we just don't know.

Warning, TMI alert. I wondered if it changed/increased your CM! My CM has been very different since having my copper IUD. THere is certainly much more and it is quite liquid like to the point where I often kept running to the loo thinking AF had returned. I think now I will certainly take it out a few months before TTC just to be safe!

thanks for chiming in on this though, because I appreciate knowing all these things!!! I can't try all these things on myself so I love the tMI ;))
BTW, your last avatar was darling but your new one may actually be killing me from cuteness!!! So so adorable.

Thanks! It is so cute it makes my heart ache. That is my 15 month old twin 1. I am so happy with how the photos from the shoot turned out. At least if I have DS4 I will be able to use the outfits again ;)
