View Full Version : Could this be true as to why some of us get all girls/boys??

Hi all,

I read an article some time ago based on womens cycles and it found that women who have long cycles mostly conceive girls and women who have short cycles mostly conceive boys, so Im assuming those who have irregular have both genders, has this been true with you?

I usually have a 31day cycle and O around day 17-18 so I guess mine is long, therefore it would be true for me.

Hey, atomic here - Updating all the helpful threads 12-13-17 so I am simply moving my reply here in italics to this question from the 3rd page to the first so people can better see it.

First of all, 31 days is not a long cycle. That is a normal cycle. Oing on CD 17-18 is not unusual or "abnormal" in any way. It is normal for cycles to go anywhere from 21-35 days (3-5 weeks), and some sources even increase that to 42 days (6 weeks) if that is a person's regular cycle and they aren't irregular.

To answer your question, conceiving girls or boys has nothing to do with the length of your cycle per se, it's the underlying REASON why a person has short or long cycles that may sway. There is more than one reason why cycles could be short or long.

Long cycles due to PCOS seem to be correlated with more sons conceived. Women with PCOS have higher testosterone levels.

Long cycles due to hypothalamic amenorrhea (where your body stops ovulating or yoru cycles get longer due to diet, exercise, excessive stress and this lowers estrogen) seems to be correlated with more daughters conceived.

Irregular cycles can be caused by any or all of the above. It is common for people with both PCOS and HA to have no cycle for months and then to have a few normal ones and then back to spotty ones again.

Women with normal "short" if you'd like to use that term (because what I think of as a short cycle may be anovulatory and caused by LOW estrogen and is affiliated with menopause, not the type of cycle I think you're talking about), may have a lot of estrogen that speeds up the process from egg to ovulation, and that same estrogen makes a lot of really fertile CM that seems to sway more blue.

But again, that's just a coincidence, it's not that their cycles in and of themselves are doing a thing, it's that conceiving in a month when you have a lot of nice EWCM may make it more likely that you conceive a boy, and that is more likely to happen in a month when everything is running like clockwork and you have a normal length cycle.

There are a LOT of reasons why a person might have all boys and all girls and the biggest of them is LUCK.

I have long irregular cycles, usually about 34 days, sometimes more. Only once did I have a perfect 28 day one.

Usually long cycle (bit irregular) and I have a boy. I think like most 'gender prediction' things (peeing on things, stuff you crave, how quickly your leg hair grows!! etc.) this will be correct 50% of the time ;) x

I've also had long cycles for as long as I can remember and I have two boys. My cycles got longer when I started to sway as well & I'm now expecting ds3. Sorry but I don't think there's too much in it.

Mine are regular as can be 29 days, ovulate on day 15-16. But, the cycle I conceived my daughter on (post-bf cycle) was funky. I think I tried to ovulate on day 15 but failed and then actually ovulated on day 18. So it would have been longer (LP is usually 13-14 days).

No, it's not (HA is also the cause as well) but it's by far the most likely. A lot of people do not have full blown PCOS but still have some symptoms such as long cycles - so I really should ahve written PCOS-tendencies, because you can have some symptoms and not the syndrome itself.

I just don't want to believe that I could have pcos. :( It would be my worst fears come true. I do have irregular cycles, but I'm not infertile. Pretty much the minute I stop using bcp/condoms I get pregnant. I got pregnant with an iud even. I'm not infertile at all. It seems to me if I did have it I would have trouble conceiving. I was tested for it after DS was born and showed up negative. And I did not have gestational diabetes with him. My blood sugar was perfect.

Most people with PCOS even full blown, are not infertile.

If you were tested and found in the clear, that's great. But you can still develop it later. Some researchers believe that up to 75% of all women would develop PCOS if their diet and lifestyle supported it strongly enough.

Yes I know 31 is still "normal" but mine are usually anovulatory :( I can tell from this cycle that I have tried to ovulate twice and my temps keep dropping indicating no true ovulation has occurred... Well see what dr says on the 9th... Oh and I'm cd23 now...

How do you know they are anovulatory?? Are you getting AF??

edited - just remembered you have PCOS and you probably know exactly what's going on! Sorry sometimes people assume things about their cycles and then on closer inspection I find out that they just have some misunderstanding about their cycle. :)

To clarify - most people with regular 31 day cycles who are getting AF, will be ovulating. Some peopel with PCOS may be getting cysts instead of ovulation but this is not true for most people.

Oh yes I totally agree that some people do not understand..I didn't at first but eventually learned. But I wanted to answer your question.., I had an ultrasound done on cd9 (now cd23) which showed no signs of ovulation and about 10+ cysts between both ovaries... And a uterine fibroid.. As well as my right ovary being fixed ( from endometriosis) to the side of my uterus! Yea painful! So on the 13th I'm having a d&c as well as a reversal if my dr can do it... Oh for those who may be curious this is what an anovulatory cycle looks like when temping...http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/09/01/vu2a7ydy.jpg

thank u bayou!!

So everyone, we can see that in some cases this can happen but 99% of the time if a person is having reg. cycles and gets AF, they have ovulated. :)

Obesity for one. Obesity creates insulin resistance which can cause PCOS.

Coming from HT where we have mostly fertile women having infertility pretesting done, many women have PC ovaries and some have insulin resistance if checked. They are prescribed metformin for the insulin issue. Not all are obese either and most have no symptoms of PCOS.

True PCOS means you will likely have real infertility issues like the poster above is dealing with. Most times in HT, it is the boy moms that have more PC ovaries. Purely anecdotal data but that's what I've seen.

a very high carb, high sugar diet, being overweight, constant snacking on sugary/carby foods (drinking soda or juice all day) lack of exercise, and ~possibly~ that your mother and grandmother had the same sort of lifestyle! Also, it may not matter if you have a healthy lifestyle as an adult, your childhood may have set you up for it.

also just wanted to reiterate that you can be thin and have PCOS, it's just that being overweight can make it more likely.
