View Full Version : Does anyone know if U/S gel kills sperm or sways?

Just got back from my 1st RE appt. He doesn't see anything wrong with my ovaries or uterus at this point. Slightly leaning on a problem with dh or basically it may just take more time to get pg, too early to say. RE plans on running some tests, but I am limited to what and the cost since it will be out of pocket for me since my insurance doesn't cover any fertility issues. However, due to my 31-34 day cycles and me not ovulating until cd 20 or so, he plans on doing u/s every other day until I get close or do ovulate so he can have a baseline of my cycles and to help plan what other testing may need to be done. So my question/thought is, does the u/s get kill sperm or sway? I am not thrilled about having to go see the md every other day for like the next week and now I am afraid the gel is definitely going to ruin this month. Still planning on using preseed and ewcm if the gel doesn't damage that too..lol. Any thoughts?
TIA

Interesting question. I have read that some doctors do not use any gel when you are actively TTC and I have read that some people bring preseed with them and have them use that to do the u/s. I did find this with google-
Fertility & Sterility. 2011;95:835-836
This study reported that “Sperm toxicity was observed as shown by significant declines in motility over the 24-hr assay following incubation with Aquasonic, Felis and Replens at higher gel concentrations. Although Replens, even at only 0.83% v/v resulted in sperm toxicity. Pre-Seed alone was not toxic to sperm at any concentration, including the highest (8.3%). Three of the “nonspermicidal” gels were toxic to sperm, including Aquasonic Gel which is widely used for transvaginal ultrasound during ovulation. Pre-Seed alone did not cause sperm toxicity at any time or concentration. It is appropriate for use by patients trying to conceive or clinicians during fertility procedures, including facilitating vaginal insertion of ultrasound probes.”
Are you going to have your DH checked out?? That is the FIRST thing I would pay for because it is the most likely culprit. Is he on a supplement? A fertility one?

I guess I will ask Friday when I go back what they are using for gel, just assumed it was normal u/s gel, but I am not sure. I do plan to have him checked after this cycle is completed. The RE wanted to do one cycle of "timing" ovulation by u/s and giving it a try that way before he procedes with other testing. Due to our ages of only 28 and 29, he doesn't plan on anything too vigorus right now or at least until this cycle has run it's course and he has a better idea of my cycle or what's going on. My u/s for now should be covered but a lot of other stuff is not.
DH is on a mvit, not on a fertility blend though. What is the best one out there? Dh was also on a med that was prohibiting us from getting more than one attempt in and only able to dtd every 3 days, so timing dtd just right was very important. Dh is now off the med b/c it was causing other medical issues.
I am a nurse, but I am not familiar with how all of this infertility stuff works as this is my first experience with "infertility" so I am sorry if I sound like a total newbie with the RE/infertility conversation.
My insurance is complicated, and its not a nationwide/known plan that a lot of physicians accept. He is the only RE that is covered under my insurance, or whatever they will pay. I have worked with him as a nurse/doctor relationship as I do work in the women's unit at my hospital. At this point I trust him so far and I know that these things take some time. I am willing to see what he has to offer me starting out and if this month is a bust, I am sure he will want to proceed with further testing.
Thank you for your response. Any help or pointers is welcome and very appreciated.

Well, it may just be as simple as you guys have not DTD at the right time! Easy fix now that he is off those meds hopefully.
If you have to do anything, they usually start with the guy first because it is ONE test. A semen analysis. If that looks ok, you will do testing day 3 of your next cycle and check ovarian reserve. That's the beginning of fertility testing. Since you have two kids already, you can obviously have kids so it was probably just not timing intercourse when your egg was there given your DH's issue. Good luck!

I hope we can get there without having to do too much testing. It's been a long and rough journey that's not even over, but I am willing to see where this leads me. Although I wish I could get pg NOW, I am a little happy that my RE is starting slow instead of going full court press right now. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of why it is taking so long and hopefully this year I will get pg.
Thanks for the advice, probably wont be the last time I ask these types of questions either...lol

A friend of mine recently had several u/s, got told there was an egg about to be released, DTD and is now pg with a girl...although I don't know what factors contributed or even if the u/s was internal. She def wasn't swaying, just trying to get pg.

Glad you are seeing a fertility doc. My insurance covered "testing"but not treatment. It just gave me the assurance that everything was anatomically normal &according to the doc "looked good".
I don't have any ideas about the u/s gel but I really hope this doc can help you without breaking the bank.

Just got back from my 2nd us. They use water soluable us gel, which I am assuming is not "great" for a blue sway at all. My insurance company will cover the u/s right now because the md is looking into my "irregular" cycle of 31-34 days and why I ovulate on days 20-22, to see if he can do something with that. Most other stuff is not covered or just depends on what they are looking for in testing.
I definitely cannot afford to break the bank, as dd2 will be getting tubes in both ears in a few weeks which is expensive even with insurance.
The nurse told me I may ovulate from the left side this month as well, as that is where she saw a follicle maturing. Now I am paranoid after reading studies and posts that left side can sway girl just a tad. I know that in the end only God is in 100% control, but it does scare me just a tad because I want a son so bad.
I go back sunday am for another us and then I am guessing tues and possible thurs as well or until I get a sure sign that I will ovulate.
I guess I am just afraid that my fertility is tanking and that definitely sways girl! If only life would turn out the way you need/want it too, it would be so much simpler at times.

Honestly, if you have the time to wait, I'd hold off this cycle due to the left side ovulation. Let me just state very clearly that I do not in any way think this is a make or break sway for you or anyone's sway, but you have the information and you're a young gal with time to wait, I'd postpone a month and avoid the whole shebang with the ultrasound gel and all the rest of it.

After considering all options, I think I will ttc this cycle. I will ovulate between today and Saturday, as I have gotten a +opk and the US shows a mature follicle from the left ovary. If this cycle does not work, my RE wants to try clomid to bring ovulation earlier than day 19-21.
Either way I look at it, I will have some factor that sways girl that will be going against my sway. If I don't try this month, I have kind of wasted my co-pays, my time and their time. All I can do is continue on the best that I can and pray that it works in my favor.
Atomic, you have so much wisdom about this stuff and I appreciate your input and knowledge.

Officially in the 2ww, I believe I ovulated yesterday, cd 19. I was able to get attempts in on nights of o-3, o-1, and o night...yay. Hoping this 2ww goes by fast so I can either move forward with my RE's plan or hopefully get pg this cycle.

Just wanted to add my story as well.
I'm trying to sway for a girl.
Had u/s most of months for this past year..
Unfortunatelly, my doctor was out of clinic last month(October) and I had to check my ovulation and folicles at other available doctors. They were only doing intravaginal u/s so I didnt knew it will hurt my tactic of getting pg.
I did checked on 29 October at around 13:00 time..had a folicle of 2.98 and a ovucit inside quite big (left ovary ovulation). So we DTD that night...next day went at around 17:00 to check if the ovulation occured..and the doctor confirmed with another intravaginal u/s...
I had strong pains that morning...
I'm not 100% sure that the reason for me for not getting pg was the gel used at u/s but thought A LOT when my AF came about every single details we did (I'm 27, fertile and my husband has just turned 33)..so I figured this is the only reason of me getting a BFN.
I then read this as well :
Despite labels, some vaginal lubricants harm sperm (http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6AB00A20101112?irpc=932)
Was shocked! Killing 88% is A LOT!!!
So yes, for me just OPK from now on..no more u/s.
I think most of the doctors do not think at this at all...but I think it's a bad thing..I'm hoping everyone is trying to conceive and does u/s, reads this.
I'm wondering if you got pg in the end?
Oh, and Atomic..what is with the left ovary ovulation? Does this means it's a girl?

Left sided ovulation may be SLIGHTLY more likely to be a girl, especially if you were ovulating from the right side for 2 months or more prior, and then suddenly switch to the left ovary.
PLEASE don't read too much into that though. We have had many many people on here get boys from the left and girls from the right.
