I am totally addicted to starbucks and every sat and sunday I get a large latte. Is that too much for pregnancy? During the week, I just drink one cup of coffee in the AM and nothing else! I totally kicked my diet soda habit after 20+ years so it is just the coffee I am worried about!

Hi! I don't know the answer to your question but I have 2 - 3 regular size instant coffee's a day, I just cannot get through the day without them! With my first 2 I cut caffeine completely, this time I'm doing it in moderation.

All of the way though my pregs with DS1, 2 and 3, I had a large Café Latte at Café Nero (stronger than Starbucks) Monday-Friday, plus a small Latte at home before I went to work and all three were very healthy boys, so I'd say you have nothing to worry about having one a day. My ob, who is French, has actually said everything in moderation is fine. Good luck. x

If I recall correctly, I think it was recommended no more than 200mg per day. Don't forget this includes fizzy drinks, tea/coffee and chocolate. So thankful baby really doesn't seem to like hot drinks - I miss my coffee though.

This may help (approx - coffee shops in particular have different strengths of coffee and more often than not use a double shot in a cup, they do in the UK anyway, so best to ask for a single shot in future):

one mug of instant coffee: 100mg
one mug of filter coffee: 140mg
one mug of tea: 75mg
one can of cola: 40mg
one can of energy drink: up to 80mg
one 50g bar of plain chocolate: up to 50mg
one 50g bar of milk chocolate: up to 25mg

I've always been naughty with the caff in my pregnancies. I do wonder if a chemical I had was related to caff intake but that time I really had been off the charts with caff (2 monsters within 24 hours) due to a sleepless night and a ton of other stress (did not know I was preggo till bleeding started)

I've always been told 1-2 cups is fine in pregnancy, but I tend to avoid it in the first trimester. I do love coffee though. ;)

I saw this thread and miss coffee but with my past history- I think its best I avoid it but I know that towards the 3rd Trimester. I resume to 1 cup per day...can't wait to get there!

Increased risk of miscarriage comes in around 400 mg per day or about 4 shots of espresso. Espresso is the most measured and reliably constant caffeine source. A cup of coffee can range from less than a 100 mg to nearly 350, so when I'm pg I switch to espresso and keep it at 2 shots per day. One cup of coffee will always be under the 400 mg, as well, but I am hardly ever disciplined enough to stop at one
