View Full Version : Knee pain, cause for concern?

My wife has been suffering for the past two weeks with pretty severe back pain, not the typical 'lower back pain' but an agonising dull pain in her upper back, to the point where she can not sit for a few seconds without it hurting and her having to stand again. (annoying enough as that is she is getting very upset by it) according to the doctor this is quite normal... She is 28 weeks.

After most of today she managed to sit for ten minutes before calling it quits and needing to walk or lay down and she spent most of the day inseperable from her wheat bag!

We have been getting so used to this that it isn't even a worry anymore.

Tonight she woke me up i assumed it may be her back again but it wasn't. She started getting swelling in her knees yesterday and a dull ache when bedtime arrives, but tonight it was more than that, she told me her knee felt really hot, i checked and it did... A few moments later her knee was hurting a little, within a few minutes she was in absolute agony, so bad in fact that she pretty much went in to shock, she was shaking and crying over the pain (abd of course i couldn't do anything...) i warmed up her wheat bag and covered her up which seemed to help after a few minutes... But my worry is wether this is yet another LOVELY pregnancy symptom - or if i should be concerned about something more serious? Needless to say we're both first timers so haven't really got a clue!

I will probably speak to the doctor tomorrow if i can just to see what he has to say but it would be nice to know what you think.

I would defiantly be asking the dr to look more into this and not just dismiss it as a pregnancy symptom. I haven't experienced anything like that in any of my pregnancies??!? Let us know what they say and I hope your wife starts to,feel better and you can both start enjoying the remainder of the pregnancy.

I think she needs to see a doctor, this does not sound normal at all to me. While it can be possible for pregnancy to cause edema in the joints and pain, the sudden acute nature of this makes me concerned the pregnancy might have triggered an autoimmune disorder.

If your normal OBGYN doesn't take it seriously and it doesn't resolve like within a couple of days I would consult with a rheumatologist.

Hoping that all is well and that this does turn out to be just pregnancy aches and pains.

A warm to the touch area on the legs can indicate a blood clot, super smart to get it checked out!

As far as the back pain and it going through the leg, that can be indicative of sciatica which I had horribly bad with my last pregnancy. However the presence of the swelling and warm skin is something else possibly.

Best of luck to your wife and I hope she feels better quickly. Perhaps a visit to the chiropractor should be in her future, it did help me a lot.

Okay, turns out the back pain is trapped gas.. It was hard to believe until it travelled to her chest, which made it more obvious to us. Her back was bad all day yesterday until the evening and seems fine today for the first time in forever.

As for the knee, we have another appointment today for some tests as the doctor isn't quite sure. She has had a leg brace on for a full day and the pain practically vanished. It ached a little in the evening but only for a short while and that was after the brace came off!

Pregnancy baffles me, but she seems a lot better today. Thank goodness!

I'm glad she's feeling better and wishing you all the best as you begin this crazy journey known as parenting. :)
