View Full Version : Too early for an ultrasound??

So I have an ultrasound scheduled for next Tuesday but I've been googling and now think it is going to be way to early to even be worth my while?? I'll only be 5 weeks 4 days (based on EDD from LMP).
I am so eager to get some confirmation that everything is ok and that there is actually a baby growing in there and it's not a blighted ovum or anything (especially as I'm so concerned about my lack of symptoms) but do you think they will even be able to see anything so early? 😕

I completely understand where you are coming from, I was the same when I was first pregnant with DS. I had an ultrasound with him at 8 weeks pregnant because I had read that the heartbeat doesnt start until around 6 weeks so I didnt think there would be anything to gain (for me) on the mindsetting front until then. We saw the heartbeat and it was amazing.

5 weeks 4 days is really too early if you want to make sure you see a HB. I would wait until after 6 weeks. If you are off on your dates, you may be further along that you think though!

I would wait until 8 weeks it's horrible not seeing the hb at 6 weeks and being told it wasn't a viable pregnancy only for the bh to show two weeks later at a scan. Been there. Not fun. Hope all ok xx

This was at 7+2. There's very little to see at this stage other than a yolk sac (left) - the baby (right) is much the same size (only just over 1cm, but has a heartbeat):
18108
Anything earlier than this won't clearly be picked up on at all as far as size. The heartbeat won't be clearly seen until at least 6 weeks.

I had an u/s with my first son at 5 weeks. They could see the gestational sac and a yolk. No heartbeat at that time, but had me come back a week later at 6 weeks and there it was.
My second son's first u/s was at 5w6d (though he measured 5w3d) and there was a tiny heartbeat. Was told it was slow and that I needed to go back for a follow up u/s. All was good at the second u/s.
So it really depends. I don't know that they would be able to diagnose blighten ovum that early in the pregnancy. I had a blighted ovum once and I went at 7 weeks -- he said it might be too early (which, I'm not dumb, I know what should be there at that point) and had me come back a week later.
I think I responded on another post about lack of symptoms, but you're so early. There is plenty of time for symptoms to hit. I never really had any symptoms except fatigue, which started around week 6.
Good luck in whatever you decide to do (re: u/s). I hope they see something that will put your mind to rest!

I have to put another mark for around 8 weeks. I had a missed miscarriage last pregnancy and found out at 10 weeks. I ended up doing a lot of reading and as far as confirming everything is ok, that heart beat at 8 or after 8 weeks is a great choice. By then it should for sure be beating.

I agree with the consensus, I would rather wait it out in limbo a few extra days than go into not see a heartbeat. For some reason, the techs are oftentimes very negative even when it's too early to see anything and people come away with a sense that their pg is doomed when it isn't.

I would wait until at least a bit over 6 weeks. As Atomic says the techs just say they can't find a heartbeat or see anything and they leave you thinking the worst. I would definitely wait.

I'll think I'll reschedule it then. I'm pretty sure about dates as we only had the one attempt at +opk so I'd defiantly only be 5 weeks +4 (based on LMP) or 6 weeks +1 based on ovulation.
Thanks ladies! 😊

Mumofsix... I agree with everyone else, I would do it a week later! I have an u/s scheduled for the 22nd, which will be my 6th week (same as you, I think you and I have very close EDD's).

Ok, note to self - have to call and reschedule today! 😉
And yes we do Houseofblue! According to the drs dates (based on last CD1) I'm due 12/12/14 but based on my dates of ovulation and attempt, I'm due 8/12/14. 😊

Rescheduled scan til 28/4. It's the earliest I could get in if I cancelled next weeks. It's actually DS5's Birthday but it's all they had. Bummed I have to wait longer to make sure everything's ok but I know next week wouldn't have been worth it anyway.

It may just drive you nuts, but you could get a home fetal monitor, I bought one last pregnancy just before I found out about my loss cause I felt like something was wrong, was like $60 on ebay. Though most women don't get to hear a HB that way until at least 8-9 weeks. I heard it at my midwife with DS 1 and DS 2 at 7 weeks though so sometimes you can. I'm not sure it'd make you worry more or less this early lol Would likely help later to confirm that HB once a week if you're worried about a loss this time for some reason.

Thanks unwirklich, I'll look into that, not that I have the money right now! 😞 But I think it would help ease my mind. 😊💜

I second the fetal monitor...I have one ( have had it since DS1) and it was a lifesaver!!! The earliest I heard a hb was 8/9 weeks.

So I've looked at the monitors and everyone seems to recommend First Beats, but they don't seem to exist anymore??!? What brands did you use? I obviously don't want to spend a lot of money as it's our last baby but also want something that works. 😊

My hubby bought mine off of Ebay a long time ago, back in 2005! It's a light green color and is German I think? I forget the name, I will try to dig it out of my closet tomorrow! It is VERY good quality... my sister used it last year when she was PG with my nephew and she loved it too.

I never actually got a chance to use mine :( I did a lot of forum crawling before I bought it though and it got really good reviews. This is the one I have

I think that is the same doppler I have unwirklich. I found it very reassuring in the early weeks before you can feel the baby move. I will have to check to see if I can hear a HB yet but last time I think I found it around 8 or 9 weeks. She always seemed to be in the same spot once I found her and down lower than I thought she would be. I only checked once a week. From what DH says dopplers give off more "energy" (or higher frequency or something) than uls so when I got it he made me promise to only use it one a week.

Yeah, I had read that too, that overuse can be bad for baby, I had planned once a week too.

So I tried the doppler for the first time today at 9+5 and found it within about 2 minutes. This baby is a little to the left of my DD. Almost right in the center about 5 inches below my belly button. HB was 160. I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to hear this soon because of an anterior placenta but I was able to find it. It was faint but definitely there!!
