View Full Version : OB is advising me against baby Aspirin

Ugh! Not sure what to do. I really want to take baby Aspirin and if I'm going to do so, I think I need to start ASAP as I'm about a week away from my attempt. But I asked my OB and she advised against it. She said she only recommends it if you've had multiple miscarriages as it has a small risk to the fetus' kidneys. Well, now I'm terrified to use it! I wouldn't think it could harm the fetus, though, if you stop it right after the attempt, right? Not sure what to do now! HELP!!:worry:

I take baby aspirin from AF-O (81 mg is the maximum). I think once you ovulate and attempt you should stop the baby aspirin until AF comes again.

I'd stop right after the attempt too, I heard today that baby's kidneys can't get rid of aspirin so it builds up in their bodies instead

So, is it safe to take it everyday from AF-O and then stop abruptly right after O?

funny, in the HT world they tell us to take it until 28 weeks. I actually stopped b/c I had bleeding issues with this pregnancy, but that is the general protocol.

It's okay if you stop right after O. Some doctors say you can go further, but that's usally if you have a clotting disorder that's leading to miscarriages. It's best to just stop.

Edited to add: I just read Atomic's 'Most dangerous things when swaying" and she says it is important to wean yourself off baby aspirin. DON'T quit cold turkey! I've read different things at other sites, so I would say to use common sense or consult your doctor.

Ok, now I'm freaked out. I'm 6 dpo and have been taking Baby Aspirin every day. Should I start taking it every other day for a few days, then every 3 days then stop?

I'm really freaking myself out about Aspirin! Ugh! I want to take it, but now I'm all paranoid that I'm going to have an allergic reaction to it or something. OMG I'm looney tunes! LOL

EXACTLY. Thanks for chiming in here Sassafras.

I'm not a doctor and of course you should always do what your doctor says, but everything I've read about low dose aspirin early in pregnancy has indicated that it's safe except in cases of placental abruption/previa (which usually don't manifest themselves until after the first couple weeks of pregnancy anyway) and in fact it very well may be therapeutic and help prevent miscarriage. There are THOUSANDS of people taking it right this minute after having HT and after recurrent miscarriage. Plus, as I have mentioned on many threads, you do not need to take it every day or even every otehr day to reap benefits from it. Even if you only take it once or twice a week, you'll still get some benefits to your pH.

I'm sorry, but I think doctors tell people "Oh, you don't need that unless you've had miscarriages" too much. None of us WANT to have even one miscarriage let alone several.

There are tons of studies out there but here is jsut one http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8498423

I think it's best to wean off aspirin gradually, so you may jsut want to cut back on the dosages to once or twice a week.

Babies do not even HAVE kidneys until 7 weeks gestation and even those are the earliest precursors to kidneys. They don't start passing urine until 10 weeks. I think some of these concerns are based upon advice given later on in pregnancy and everyone agrees that you should not take baby aspirin (or any aspirin) in the third trimester.

It's probably fine 99% of the time but I think to err on the side of caution and NEVER stop medicines like that cold turkey (hormonal herbs are different because they work with your cycle) It is fine to reduce the amount you are taking, even cutting back to once or twice a week.

That is up to you. You can start weaning it back if you want to, but you don't have to. Like I said above, all the HT ladies take baby aspirin and a lot of the swayers have taken it perfectly safely.

Please know that I have looked into all these things thoroughly and while I do totally appreciate you guys pointing out new info and stuff I may not have heard of, I will never advise you to use or take anything that I don't feel to be safe.

People can indeed be allergic to aspirin (although you would ~probably~ already know that by now) but I really do feel it's safe to take in early pg and may help prevent miscarriage.

Thanks, Atomic. We all trust your research, don't worry - I just got scared because it was advice from a doctor. When I did some quick Google searches I saw a lot of the same info you mentioned, particularly that it really only becomes a risk in the last trimester. I hope I'll be getting a BFP in the next couple of days, so I'll blame my freak out on hormones!
