View Full Version : Already have frozen embryos here in Australia, what's the process for taking them to the US?

Hello,

After 7 months of unsuccessful swaying naturally for a girl, I'm thinking about HT in the US to get my girl. I have four, 5 day embryos from an ivf cycle with my first child (second was natural conception). Can I have them delivered to the US and have them tested? Do they need to thaw them to test them? If so, can they refreeze them? I've spoken to my fertility specialist here and he is happy to help me with a cycle from this end.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

What testing did you have for those embryos? Can you not get a report of what the embryos are? Surely if they were 24 chromosome tested they would know the gender.

No testing at all to my knowledge, they would only test if they need to check for a genetic issue.

Possibly- ProhibitedRestrictedGoods5 (http://customs.gov.au/faq/ProhibitedRestrictedGoods5.asp#Q368)

You would need to ship them to a clinic that has a day 5 biopsy, day 6 transfer capability. HRC can do that and perhaps some of the NY clinics. You can set up a free consult with HRC to ask them directly through the site.

I asked Dr P this question in my consult. I too have four frozen day 5 embryos. He said they can be shipped over but he would still recommend cycling as well to increase our chances. No idea of cost though.

I would be like doing a FET plus PGD fee. If you just shipped the embryos and did not do another cycle, you would prepare your body for a medicated FET and then pay for the PGD plus the shipping fees.

I investigated this process thoroughly. It is definitely possible. However I would consider doing a cycle with Dr P and adding these embryos in to the PGD process. They can be thawed, biopsied and re frozen. As you have four that are not tested I probably wouldn't recommend just going over with them for a FET as the chances of one healthy xx from four is reduced. If you had ten, fair enough...

Thank you for all of this great information, I take it on board that it would be worth doing both. As I'm now 38 I might not produce as many embryos as I did before but it would be worth it. How long would I need to be in the US for?

You would need 2 weeks minimum.

Thank you and what would be the approximate cost of the treatment?

If you do a new cycle? If you become a Dream Member, your cycle is $11,200. You also get a free consult through the contact form on this site. If you cycle there and aren't a Dream Member, it is $12,200.

Yes a new cycle. That's a good price, I had in my head that it would be around 30K. At this point I'm thinking of doing HT for my no 4 child as I'm booked to do a normal ivf cycle in Australia starting shortly for my no 3 child. Thanks for all of the information.

You would just have to add on flights, accomm, drugs etc so probably closer to $20k
