View Full Version : Is late ovulation potentially preventing my BFP?

I love this site, so much information! We've been ttc for about 8 cycles now. I usually ovulate cd 17, and now I'm starting to ovulate cd 18. I have 28-29 day cycles every single month. I had my progesterone tested, and my results came back indicating that I did ovulate. My diet has always been very blue friendly. We can't get DH tested, or any further testing until our 1 year mark. In the meantime, I want to try to improve our chances! We're 27, could stand to lose a good 15lbs (I'm working on it!) We've tried smep, eod, less frequency, drinking whole milk every day, lots of protein. Everything!!! I don't care about boy or girl anymore (we initially wanted a boy first), we just want a bundle of joy of our own. I will probably be doing more cardio (spin) as I'm trying to lose weight. I've lost 5lbs so far. Is my late ovulation potentially due to high testosterone? I read on here about peppermint and spearmint tea to lower it, and make ovulation more normal. Today is cd 2. Help:SS:

I ovulate much later & I'm pretty sure I don't have high testosterone. Are you sure when you're ovulating? A short luteal phase could be the problem if it's a few days later than you think.

If you are getting AF 10 days or less after you O, you may have a luteal phase defect. Have you tried atomic's fertility diet? Vitex? Sometimes these things sort themselves out on their own...

Sorry I think this got bumped away from me.

That is a short LP but technically is supposed to be long enough for pregnancy to happen.

My suspicion is that the HE Diet over time has perhaps made you a little bit higher in T and possible delayed O and shortened LP. So yes, I think it's a good idea to lose a bit of weight and do some exercise.

I don't think the spearmint/peppermint is any kind of miracle and my concern is that it might also mess with your cycle. My recommendation is Pregnitude. I'd do it daily for 10 days CD 1-10, then take a break till O occurs, then every other day till AF comes. If you get BFP, drop it.

There are two reasons why people ovulate late. Some people it's higher testosterone, others it's lower estrogen

:agree: the AFD for blue swayers may help too http://genderdreaming.com/forum/gender-swaying-general-discussion/9052-swaying-under-special-circumstances-part-3-pcos.html (it's 5 posts from the top)

Both my boys I got pregnant on cd 20 or 30 something. I've got log cycles but my LP is long enough so the pregnancies stuck.

I tend to O around CD18 but my hormone levels are all well within nornal range. Some of us just O a bit later. I wouldn't necessarily worry about a delay of a day or two on occasion. A week later more than once with a shorter LP as well, that would start to concern me.

Ok chiming in here from learning new stuff during my HT process.

First, my personal history is, I ovulate late. Always have - around CD16-18 in the past, sometimes later. Recent years it's actually shifted up for me a bit to CD15 or so. My LP was always rather cruddy too - avg 9-10 days, sometimes as short as 8, NEVER in my life longer than 12.

Curiously enough, I've now learnt of something called "PCOS tendency". It's when you aren't really PCOS but have hormones that easily 'swing' that way, and with the right lifestyle triggers and stressors, like weight gain, can kick you into PCOS. Some symptoms are some degree of insulin resistance, difficulty ovulating (like, multiple LH surges and late O), short LP. If you're testing hormonal b/w, LH being higher than FSH.

Now that's all more HT/IVF stuff but I'm noticing even in this thread that we're ALL boy moms with this problem! Which if you link late O to 'PCOS tendencies' means higher levels of testosterone, and hence - boys! So IMO I don't think late O/PCOS tendencies can necessarily make you infertile but it certainly seems to sway blue, at least to my observation.

:agree: totally with Lace and it's believed that somewhere between 75%-100% of all women could eventually develop PCOS if our lifestyles support it strongly enough. Some of us are lucky and fall on the "less susceptible" end of the continuum and can carry on drinking Dr Pepper into our middle age (please Lord!) others get PCOS even with perfect diets and good exercise habits. But it's not a "disease" in the proper sense of the word.

Well there are worse health conditions to be prone to for sure!!

I used to say that having a family tendency to diabetes is a blessing in disguise, as it's forced me to eat healthier and exercise regularly at a young age to keep the weight off. So I'm healthier than my 'skinny fat' husband!

I'm definitely prone to IR and diabetes thanks to family genes, but at least I know ALL the women on my dad's side (and I take 100% after my dad) are very very fertile, so there's that, LOL.

*Update* Met with the fertility specialist today. I have boderline pcos. No cysts or anything, but weak ovulation, and she saw an abundance of eggs. Doing an HSG, and will start clomid next month assuming no blocked tubes. I'm going to come off the HE diet, and start just looking at a pcos for fertility type lifestyle.

Blood results are in! Hormones are all within normal range, I do not have pcos. My vitamin d however, was very very low. She prescribed 50,000 IU 4x a week for 3 months. She doesn't think that's preventing me from getting pregnant. DH provided his semen sample this week, so we'll get his results. If he's okay then we're looking at being unexplained I guess/!?

I bet the vit D will help.

I agree I doubt the Vit. D is an issue but hey, can't hurt and good for health anyway.

DH's results were perfect! Apt today to pick up prescription for clomid. I took a test at 6pm with 2hr hold for kicks, and :holysheep: I'm pregnant!!! Line immediately came up nice and dark!
