View Full Version : When did your cycles return after stopping BF?

After stopping BF at around twelve months with my first two, I had my first AF after a month. Suggesting that I released an egg a fortnight after stopping. With DS3 he's weaned about the same time, which is over two months ago now, and I've still not had a cycle. I wondered if any of you could share your thoughts. I'm assuming it's just LE messing with my cycles and elongating them. My % body fat is now 26% (on my basic scales at home) so I should still ovulate right? Oh and I am DTD every four days and testing every week or two. Thanks.

I'm no help, I got AF while still breastfeeding! It was when he was 9 months old, exactly 4 weeks after he slept through the night one freaking time! He was still breastfeeding all day.

I do think you should have had AF. Can you take anything like vitex that might help bring in AF?

I know. The problem is that it's not advised to take Vitex while PG and as I have zero idea when I will ovulate, Atomic advised stopping taking it. I took it for a couple of months but stopped last month just in case. Patience is not one of my virtues but one I think I need!

Like bluebonnet, I also got my AF back right after my son started sleeping through the night, around 9 months. He will be 1 in a week and I am coming up on my 4th cycle. I took Vitex 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off for 2 months before my cycle returned and I think it really helped. The first 2 cycles were about 45 days and they have now normalized around 30.

With my first son I did not get my cycle back until he was about 14 months old and I had stopped BF for 2 months. I think Vitex made the difference in it coming back earlier.

Thanks JP. I still have some Vitex so maybe I will take it for a couple of weeks again? Do a PG test first maybe?

"Should" is a funny thing when it comes to ovulation - your body doesn't know from BMI and sometimes just likes to delay things a bit longer regardless of what BMI is.

I always got mine back while still BF but I nursed longer than the norm too. Soonest was 4 months, longest was 2 years.

I strongly suspect that you will O and get AF very very soon. I know it sucks to wait though.

Don't take vitex for now. I don't think you need it and if we take it when O is about to happen on its own it may delay further.

Thanks Atomic. You're great taking time to reply to us all! I will try to stay patient. I stopped drinking last month assuming we'd catch an egg soon, but have relaxed that a bit, having a glass here or there, to stay chilled out about it. I feel I'm being more of a Mary this time :)

My period returned after 6 weeks of stopping BF eachtime but I have to say the LE diet is messing up my ovulation!

I'm no help as my periods started back at 5 and 6 WEEKS postpartum even though I was nursing exclusively and nursed both kids for 2-3 years each! Still bummed about it!

Eeekk, that really sucks! I got what I thought was a period 6 weeks postpartum when I started the mini pill. I was so upset! I stopped the mini pill a few months after starting it and "AF" never came back (or at least not until 9 months).

Oh same here essnce! I got mine back basically a week after my post-birth bleeding stopped. It was so unfair my son had an enormous appitite & I exclusively breastfed for a whole year (not by choice, he didn't want solids til then) & am still breastfeeding him now (he is nearly 3 1/2 & I'm 7 weeks pregnant). I'm also still well pissed off about it!!!
