View Full Version : How bad is coffee when ttc a boy?

Trying to follow boy diet even though I usually don't eat breakfast during working week.
Been having toast with vegemite or cereal with full cream milk.
I have 1-2 instant coffees a day. Sometimes I switch one out for a "proper" coffee.
Does this really impact chances for a boy? Have always drunk coffee and so far have 2 DD and 1 DS.
Twice a week I will have a 3pm can of coke as well. Start work early and stare at screen all day. I have been pretty successful in increasing water though and now trying to snack more rather than just eating twice a day.
Who knew ttc diet was so complicated.

I'm sure you can still get a boy with coffee, as plenty of women do.
For me, however, I was a water and green/white tea drinker only when I conceived my boys. :)
I did add caffeine to my girl sway though (daily cappuccino and diet soda).

It is coming into summer here so my go-to is either iced coffee or taro bubble tea.
Now wondering if I should stop coffee all together. Won't that be pleasant for DH :/

I think tea is better than coffee and so I would switch one for the other if possible. It's not a dealbreaker if you can't, but it is a pretty easy thing that may help.
When you have your coke in the afternoon, I'd try to sneak in a bit of protein with it if possible.

I drink almost a pot of coffee a day + green tea and other teas like chamomile... I know that's wayyyyy too much coffee so I was going to start slowing down now and the month of ttc, stop completely.... Or should I stop the full 6-8 weeks? Thx!

I have a big vice which thankfully I've cut down since being pregnant and that's coke. I drank too much of it before pregnancy and it's filled with nasties as well as a high caffeine content. I also loved my vanilla lattes (which I have gone off of since being pregnant for some weird reason but I'm not complaining). I also partied somewhat and drank alcohol/smoked cigs around the time of conception. I don't know how much all this influences gender but I'm lucky to have a healthy twin pregnancy (boy/girl).

That's terrific, congrats on your twins! I just stopped smoking... Not easy!

Stopping smoking is the A-1 best thing you can do to get a boy!!! If you only are able to do one thing, make it that. :)

More may be better, these changes take some time. I would just do your best, focus more on the tea and be sure since you're drinking green tea, that you are getting extra folic acid or better still folate, because green tea can block folic absorption.

Sorry atomic I saw this thread and although I'm not swaying I'm ht I but I'm worried because I have been drinking lots of green tea. But you think green tea blocks folic absorption? I thought green tea was Gud for you cos of it's antioxidant properties.

It is good for you for a variety of reasons BUT it has been shown to block the absorption of folate even at pretty small intake during pregnancy and I have a child with neural tube defect that I got having 1 green tea a day while taking 800 mcg of folic acid. That is actually the reason why it's healthy for you - it blocks the ability of cancer cells to use folic acid to grow (and by default can also inhibit the ability of a baby to grow) I would NOT drink green tea during pregnancy. Drinking Green Tea During Pregnancy May Lead to Neural Tube Defects in Developing Embryo (http://natural-fertility-info.com/green-tea-folic-acid.html)
I believe that you aren't supposed to drink green tea when going HT anyway because it can mess with hormones??? I personally would not go anywhere near the stuff because folate/folic acid is the ONLY supplement proven to help make healthy babies when taken before pregnancy.

Thx Atomic! Will slow down on the coffee soon, maybe switch to blk tea for awhile... Also, was going to start the xtra folate next month ( I've heard reports that folate is a ton better then folic) which would be 3 months prior ttc :) I also take a b12 of course and a multi... I guess I should switch to a prenatal soon....

Thanks atomic. You know I thort I was being Gud ditching my tea but am I best just drinking less normal tea a day then? Am I ok drinking berry teas and other herbal teas or will they have the same affect on folate absorption?

If you're taking a prenatal you don't need extra B12, it fhould have enough. Yes, folate is better but not everyone can afford it, so it's best to take whatever you CAN afford!! :)

Even black tea can interfere with folic absorption but nowhere near as much as green tea.
It's only the teas that are "camellia sinesis", real tea, tea. Herb teas are ok, but be sure you're not overdoing them either as some can interfere with HT and fertility (like peppermint)

Actually, I take a b12 vitamin that dissolves under the tongue b/c the body can absorb that better then one taken in whole pill form :)

Also good!! I am not a fan of megadoses and some of the BVitamins come in truly massive quantities and thus I generally recommend sticking with the amount in a prenatal for most. But whatever works! :)
