Women in job types that were categorized as "high stress" were more likely to give birth to daughters, whereas women in job types that were categorized as "low stress" had equal sex ratios or a slight male bias in offspring.

OOOOHHHHHH nooooooooo!!! I always suspected this as I have a stressful job and have 2 girls. I am on mat leave now but as I was following traditional swaying thinking I chose to attempt (yesterday) when i was stresssed and the prospect of returning to work returned. I wish you posted this yesterday rainbowflower. Oh well nothing I can do about it now...

Well I have as stressful job (nurse on intensive care) and I have 3 boys, but that said DS2 was conceived after Xmas when I was not stressed and DS3 just after a holiday. So I guess I was not feeling stressed at either of those times!!

I've heard that stress = girls as well...Did not ring true for me, though...I used to work for a big corporation and had lots of long hrs in a high level position w/unending stress. They were always trying to "squeeze blood from a turnip" from everyone. Although I made great $$$ at the time, it sucked the life out of me. 2 boys and a resignation later, here I sit hoping for a girl...

Hmm, doesn't ring true for me so far. When I got pg with my last son I was in the midst of super stress at work and family stress as well. My first son was conceived during a relatively non stressful time. Who knows!

ITA for sure. I have 4 girls and I get a lot's of stress around here I also get super angry in a quantum second and Im like this all the time.
So now I try to relax as much as I can , I listen to soft music , try to remember to calm down ect. Im just sure stress don't sway blue for me.
Maybe it's not 1 size fits all , it's for each their own thing.

I think it says it does sway but not by masses - 47% of the highest stressed had boys instead of the 51.7% nationally
;)
so you'd still expect a lot of boys to the most stressed ladies as well

I think streass sways pink for me because when I am stressed I can't eat much. That is what has been happenning to me again but I have been shoving down that food regardless. Oh well hopefully it will be different this time if not then it was meant to be for me to try the day before this study is released, I was meant to have another girl.

Hi Layla. Such a good point about the relationship between eating and stress. When I'm stressed I stuff my face which is the complete opposite! Any other boy or girl mums have any observations on this?

Hmmm...So interesting b/c when we had to put our 16 yr old dog down and then DH accidentally killed one of our others a week to the day later I could not eat AT ALL.   It was a major grief and depression kind of stress. However, when I am stressed about other things like when DH was out of town for a week, I noticed I tended to want to eat more. I think not all "stress" is the same. I think the lighter type of stress would sway "boy" for me while the really deflating/depressing/helpless type of stress would more likely sway "girl"...???

I am a major emotional eater! This is why I have found myself cheating on the low everything diet. :( It's hard since I am around food 24/7 and always feeding someone else!
DS1 was conceived while I was not at my lightest weight ever and I was at a very stressful job. I can remember snacking a lot during the day just to make it through it! DS3 was conceived when I was once again heavier than what I consider my normal weight.....but I was not super stressed.
Now, I am very stressed and this past year my Mother passed away after a very short battle with cancer. It was definitely the most difficult year of my life. Next month it marks her one year passing and the emotions and stress are very high right now.... However, I REALLY want to conceive (regardless of gender) in August to help "heal" and focus on new life....
ETA: I did start an organization in honor of my mother... she passed from a very rare form of cancer.. if you are interested in seeing my website ... please message me. :)

Absolutely, different kinds of stress, and I'm sure I've read Atomic saying the same about the second type swaying girl.
I'm so sorry to hear about your mum happyheart and I'd be honoured to look at your website - feel free to message me the details x

Nope for me all stress=less food. When simply busy at work and just running around with errands I just forget to eat seriously I am not making this up. Or I remember and I just say don't have time let me finish this and then I will eat. I suppose stress does effect people differently and a lot of people are emotional eaters as well and eat a lot when feeling depressed. Obesity I thought is generally connected to depression, but again depends on the person.
Sorry about your mother happyheart and GL with your attempt and your organisation

Please don't despair, because it's the KIND of stress and your response to it that matter.
Chronic stress where you feel that you have no control over the situation tends to sway pink, but chronic stress where you are freely taking on and overcoming challenges sways blue, not pink.
Anything that lowers testosterone (losing, failing, feeling inadequate) sways pink while things that raise testosterone (winning, meeting goals, feeling successful) sway blue.

I completely and totally agree. There are so many variables at play that you simply can't look at something as vaguely defined as "stress" and say it sways one way or another. It is very likely your emotional/physical response to stress that matters and that response is unique to every individual in every different circumstance.
Something to consider that muddles things even further is the idea that individuals have different temperaments to begin with and may even pick different occupations BECAUSE they are higher/lower in T to begin with. In fact, a study was done on this idea and it's very interesting reading http://www.danechristensen.net/stuff/Job-Child.pdf

Atomic it was a mixture of both this time. Someone made me feel inadequate and then I worked out a way out that was not a 100% win. It was more giving up some of my principles and choosing not to fight a fight in which I strongly beleive, in order to get something that I want for my family. I really have mixed feelings about it and am strongly thinking the situation swayed pink for me again. Having said that DD2 was conceived when I was feeling really good about myself at work, my job falls in the category of swaying boys under your Trivers Willard stuff. I have to be out there and agressive and winning all the time. So I don't know. I am hoping the diet will overcome this as I ate more this time despite feeling less hungry.

Well, nothing in life is every black or white, always shades of gray!!
I do think that diet goes a long way towards swaying for people! Plus I'm sending you tons of blue dust! ;)

Thanks atomic! There should be a button for trying to catch dust here! Make one whoever is in charge of this place please!!!!
