View Full Version : Breakfast alternatives to oatmeal

Ok ladies I need some help with breakfast ideas!
I am a total creature of habit and especially with breakfast I always have the same thing everyday. It's just easier with the craziness of mornings with getting the kids off to school, etc.
I love my warm bowl of hot cereal everyday. It's usually about 1/3 cup oatmeal and 1/3 cup Red River cereal (whole wheat, rye and flax), microwaved, and then I mix a bit of 1% milk, a very tiny bit of brown sugar and a handful of blueberries. It's comforting and filling and I don't get hungry again an hour later.
But if we're going back to swaying I need to avoid the oatmeal, so I'd like some ideas for alternatives! I don't like cold breakfasts at all. Regular cereal + milk is a no no as it's too high sugar and high glycemic carbs and just makes me hungry. I do have PCOS tendencies and I'm on Metformin already for that.
I sometimes have an egg + a slice of toast with butter as an alternative, but I read on Atomic's posts about swaying with PCOS that I shouldn't have too many eggs either.
So, I would really really appreciate some suggestions of something I can have for breakfast everyday that won't get tiresome. I love a warm brekky, so I don't know if there is an easy alternate out there I can just switch out for the oatmeal?
Thanks everyone!!

Pure protein or pure carbs in the morning - not both. You can mix protein and carbs at other meals, but if you need breakfast when swaying pink, do one or the other.

Awesome thanks AS!!
Okay I thought I was caught up on your essays, but I can't recall why not mix protein/carbs at breakfast and not at other meals?
Going to have to think about it....I usually do my workouts late morning so probably carbs is a better idea than protein just to get energy for my workout.

Because you want the longest amount of time with your blood sugar low (which is why most girl swayers skip breakfast completely). So either all protein, which won't raise your blood sugar at all, or all carbs, which will raise your blood sugar high but will drop it down quickly to the low range.

Okay makes sense, thanks. :) Opted for all protein as I have PCO tendencies and I'm on Metformin, and the sugar crash after overnight fast sounds like a terrible idea for me.
I ended up having cottage cheese with some strawberries and blueberries yesterday, I can live with that. :) I have a workout to do this morning so fx it'll actually be enough to fuel my workout.

I had two fried egg whites for breakfast and a cup of coffee. It certainly wasn't as filling as say two pieces of toast or a bowl of cereal. But did curb the hunger and for me was better than nothing.
Cottage cheese is the protein and fruit is the carbs- Atomic suggests only one or the other for breakfast I think? :)

Yeah I can't stomach eggs so early.
Meh, it's probably a bit of fruit carbs, but honestly I'm not going to extremes for my sway. It's got to be reasonable or it's just too much, and then I get sway-obsessed which ruins it all anyways. I'm doing the LE PCOS diet anyways so it's not as extreme as the regular LE diet. I do my workouts in the morning and if I don't have something in my system I'll crash hard. The Metformin offsets my blood sugar levels anyways, and you can't cut carbs too hard when using Met.
As far as I'm concerned it's already 'pinker' than a bowl of oatmeal which is my usual, plus lots of girl moms seem to eat cereal, and that's protein/carbs anyways. Plus I never get to eat till around 2.5-3 hours after I get up in the mornings anywho.

Because we're trying to keep blood sugar on the lowish side and if you eat pure protein, your blood sugar won't go up, and if you eat pure carbs, your blood sugar goes up but then drops really soon after that (because protein slows rises and falls in blood sugar).
We don't know that having lower blood sugar in the morning matters by that much, os if you can't do it, you can't do it.

If you're not eating for 2-3 hours, then technically that counts as skipping breakfast. IT's not that you need to not eat breakfast, just htat you're trying to extend that overnight fast by however long you're able to do so. If it's only 2-3 hours, that's fine! No medals are awarded for self-denial and misery LOL.

Thanks AS, that helps. Extremes are too OCD and 'sway-cessive' and boy mom thinking anyways, lol.
Well I cranked out my workout today and was feeling pretty much out of gas for the last half, so I'm probably burning into those glucogen stores anyways. I really don't have a lot of fat to lose so I need to be careful with dieting so I don't risk my ovulation....my bodyfat % is around 16-18% so I really don't want that to drop lower.
I think I could just switch over to a few strawberries in my breakfast and skip the blueberries, those are low GI. Generally speaking I'm just going with diabetic diets as a guideline as it gives me a good framework without me having to nitpick all the macros.
I have an iffy gallbladder that's chronic too, and too much protein can set my gall bladder off, so that's another thing I need to watch. Balance in everything!

Perfect! I usually get up at 6:30am, then I have to get the kids going off to school, and I have my breakfast at 9am. It's been my routine for ages so good to know that works anyways.
