Hi Ladies can I use any type of fiber? I bought metamusil with real sugar orange flavor.

I believe Metamucil is good.
I bought the same ones ( individual packet orange) but sugar free since it has aspartame.

yep as long as it doesn't have added herbs or vitamins

How much should we be taking? Metamucil says to take 5 capsules, 4 times a day. Seems like overkill at 20 capsules/day. Do I need to add the calories and potassium counts to my daily totals?

fefecooks, I would start with ONE capsule with each meal (so 2-3 x a day) and increase by one capsule per meal every few days. If you don't increase your fiber dosage gradually you can get bad gas/diarrhea. Also, always drink a glass of water with the fiber every time.

You don't need to worry about the potassium and only count the cals if your fiber has added sugar.

Is it ok to take it at the same time as folic? Or should I take it separately?

Those directions are for people who need that high level for chronic constipation. Start off with a couple capsules only before any meal containing fat.

HOw many calories are we talking here?

RE potassium - you are only tracking to see if you get enough, right?? Yes, the potassium can help you get adequate potassium for the day. Don't count it against yourself though.

20 capsules would be 40 calories and 100 mg of potassium per day.

I wouldn't worry about that at all! :) Plus a little free potassium is always good.

I drink the fiber before meals and take the folic acid after eating the meal. HTH!

I do the same as XX or take my folate in between meals but at least an hour or 2 before. You don't want to combine fiber + FA as you WANT to absorb all the FA. The fiber is to reduce fat/nutrients you DONT want to absorb.
