View Full Version : Bruising and bleeding

I was going to post this question the other day and forgot, but after having this polyp
Removed it made me think again to ask.
Is excessive bruising or being more prone to bruising an issue with LE? I'm loaded with bruises - some from the handles of my diaper bag/tote bag just being loaded up.... And also my gums bleed and that's not typically normal of me either except in early pregnancy which made me test again (negative).
Black and blue all over.

Could it possibly anaemia related?

Could it possibly anaemia related?

That was my first thought. My Aunt gets horrible bruises when she is anemic. Maybe worth looking into, since you don't want anything that could hinder fertility, YK?

I never thought of that!! Since I've never encountered this before, guess I'll ask my GP. and Dr.google lol

Any cinnamon consumption? Also, were you previously active but are now a couch potato? I bruise way more easily when I'm physically inactive than when I'm exercising regularly. I am often borderline anemic though...so maybe that's a factor.

Nope and nope. Maybe a little the other way around though - the first time I noticed the bruising was for our flight to cuba. That followed a week or 2 of cardio and getting in the swing for the first time. (So couch to cardio). I had my tote bag on my forearm and I wish I took a photo. Yes it was a little weighted but not extreme a just a purse filled with a couple light receiving blankets a few diapers and a travel wipes...
The the same with a grocery bag. Then unknown reasons on all over my legs and arms.
And my gums have been bleeding for weeks. This made me think I was pregnant. We always had a condom so I thought the odds were so low, and asked Dh if he noticed any leakers lol and he said no for sure not... So I still tested and of course negative.
So anemic - or even borderline, maybe that's it? Like I googled the symptoms and being tired and cold is my life lol so... I'm only on this diet for a few more weeks but if it keeps up I'll get checked out.

I would get it checked sooner rather than later, since it could potentially effect/prevent you from getting pregnant with a sticky bean.

Recently off hormonal BC? Do you think you might be clumsier than usual?

No not on bc for years and years, I do believe the leg bruises are from clumsiness, and the arm ones are from pressure.

I mentioned to Dh about all the bruises, he also said I complain about my arms all th time. I hadn't thought of this But my actual bones in my arms hurt - like my forums midway down to my wrist. I've been complaining when I drive particularity and never guessed that They might be related but he thinks it is.

Not normal and I want you to add in an 18-60 mg iron supp every day for 2 weeks and then switch to 3x a week.

Are you taking cran or aspirin?

Sounds like low iron to me. Ask to get your ferritin (iron stores) checked as you can be iron deficient and not anemic, and ferritin is not checked during normal blood tests. I am iron deficient, and probably have been since having DS1 almost 12 years ago due to heavy periods. The LE diet and then my miscarriage made it worse. My ferritin level was an 8, and my doctor said 70-90 is ideal! Under 50 and you'll feel like crap! I've been taking high dose iron (500mg of elemental iron) a day for 5 months now and my level went from 8 to 34 in the first two months, but only went from 34 to 36 in the last two months. I just made an appointment today with a hematologist to see about getting iron infusions as I still feel like crap. I am iron deficient only, not anemic, as my hemoglobin and hematocrit are normal. Symptoms of low ferritin/iron are hair loss/thinning, brain fog and memory issues, joint and muscle pain, extreme fatigue and exhaustion (I was napping daily), pica (I was craving crayons!), and feeling cold all the time. The symptoms are the same as low thyroid, which I thought was my problem initially. Low iron can lead to poor egg quality so it's better to get checked now.

Ok - thank you atomic, sounds like sound advice to me - I think I have some in the cupboard but if I don't I'll go get some in the morning.
And no, no cran or aspirin.
Do you get achy bones too, or just the bruising.

And thank you too essence - both issues are something to suggest to my doctor. I'll get the iron into me and see if it helps too while I wait for an appointment.

What I get when my iron gets low is that I will just get touched lightly or brush up against something and have a sharp pain where I was touched and it can stay sore for hours after that and then I get a bruise in the spot. Often a very dark/big bruise out of all proportion to the injury.

I also get small hemmorhages on my skin that look like moles only red and get very tired doing the most basic things, but both of those come some time after the bruising/pain does.

I have never experienced bone pain but since blood is made in your bones, it is possible there could be some connection.

If you don't feel better within 1-2 days of starting the iron supps orally, I think you should go in to the doctor and get checked to be on the safe side. Not all forms of anemia get better with oral iron, some peopel need IV iron and there is also the chance you could have something else going on instead.

I feel better IMMEDIATELY taking the iron so if you don't, that means we need to take a closer look.
