There has been some confusion about the title of this and I just want to clarify, this is about the newer blood tests like Panorama, Harmony, Materniti21 and others...because they are not invasive, women do not have to go through the riskier tests like amnio and CVS any more and that eliminates the risk of losing a baby from one of those procedures. The tests in and of themselves don't actually prevent miscarriage, it's because they take the place of the invasive tests. :)

At least two members of this site have lost babies due to the more invasive tests and the sad thing is that neither even needed the test, they were pushed into them by their doctors because they were over 35. So please please talk to your doctor about these new screening tests, before signing on for an invasive test. even if you have to pay out of pocket for it, it is worth it.

Yes at age 35 last yr the birth center kept pushing invasive screening they kept telling me I was old and might want to prepare or decide I'm not interested in keeping the baby....sad but true this happened to me

I'm likely paying out of pocket for the additional screening. Our provincial health care covers 2 screens (ips 1&2) but I want to find out the gender early also. I'm is there a big difference between these generic screenings that like harmony, and the Ips tests?

I'm not familiar with the term IPS?? is this like the triple screen and quad screen??

The new tests like Harmony are a million times better. The triple/quad screens are terrible tests and responsible for tons of grief and heartache.

Yes i believe so - it stands for integrated prenatal screening. It's blood work done at like 11 wks and 15wks I believe (trying to remember). I think they test for downs and spina bifida, and there is one scan that it's done that goes with one of the blood work draws.

Also for spina bifida?? When I'm pregnant I want to go to Spain for a bloodtest like this, as they only do this in my country when there's a higher chance of chromosonal defects, but wasn't aware they can also track neural tube defects with the bloodtesting? That would be very helpful for me, since I lost my daughter to anencephaly. So maybe I could get it here?

Ya I just read the mount Sinai ips write up and it's trisomy 18, spina bifida and downs. But like atomic said, they can cause heartache through false positives, and you wind up either doing the harmony tests (not free here) or amni (free, but you couldn't pay me...)

Oh no, I would never do an amnio, I refused it when they suggested it with my daughter. As we already knew she was not going to make it, didn't want to disturb her more in there! We don't have ips here, so won't even bother, as it seems more expensive as the Spanish bloodtest. Which is just for gender I think, but I'm hesistant of prenatal testing anyway. Just too scared of that heartache again.
