I thought Clomid was supposed the help extend luteal phase. Is there a particular pattern that be beneficial?

I took Clomid cd 3-7; I o'd on cd 19, and AF came early. Spotting/light bleeding started last night (8 dpo, possibly closer to 9 dpo depending on when exactly im the day I Od).

I expected a bfn this month but wasn't expecting a short luteal phase.

Yes, it is supposed to give you a nice long 14 day plus LP. I think there are 2 possible explanations: 1. The dose wasn't high enough, thus why you Oed late and so it also wasn't enough to extend your LP OR 2. It thinned your lining and that caused AF to come early, this seems to happen a lot with older women (later 30s and up) for some reason, I've seen it many times including multiple times on here. djmommy had the same experience on Clomid.

I'm so sorry hun, what an unpleasant double whammy. :(

Thanks maiden. Im on 100mg - and I thought as crazy as I am that it was just for swaying/swaying pink and twins, that i would have no issues. (I was assuming I didn't have any fertility issues, and was excited to get the Clomid to aid in my sway)

Background is this:
1. 1st pp Af was March 23. I started Vitex and took too long and lengthened my cycle. (Idk if you recall all this from my posts...)
2. Before the second AF came i scored the Clomid, and I was told I could take it before Af to trigger a cycle. At first I didn't but then a week later it still hasn't come (cd like 58 or so) so I threw caution to the wind and took it.
3. Six days later AF came...
4. I kept my schedule and started the Clomid again on cd 3 (probably a dumb move...)

So I hope it's bc I screwed with the timing and no other reason.

I have paperwork for cd 3 bloodwork that I'll go do, will they be able to tell anything about my luteal phase defects based on the blood work?

Is there a better day to start to Clomid for aiding in extending Lp?

Or something else I can do?

I have seen this happen a few times and it has been mostly in moms in their late 30's.

Personally, you are taking TOO high a dose and I wonder if that may come into play here. Maybe it blocked so much estrogen that your lining wasn't that great and/or it didn't leave enough for your secondary estrogen surge (the corpus luteum starts to break down afer about 7 dpo and your body is supposed to make a little more estrogen to sustain it a bit longer.)

I think we are seeing FAR better success for pregancy taking it CD 3-7 but maybe if you took it a bit later in the cycle you might have more estrogen built up before hitting it with the Clomid?

I suspect this is probably from the weird way you took it that first month and would not read too much into it.

Ok let's see how this month rolls out. I'll leave it at 3-7, since it will be my first "normal" month with it, without the weird mix up.
I'll temp and use opks as usual, and see if I get a better luteal (and hopefully get Pg!) I know I can't mess around too much better longer on it.
Atomic, do you think it's worth getting the day 3 bw done? Will it tell me anything about Lp?

I really hope it's due to taking 2 rounds of Clomid close together, and the first round at the wrong time in your cycle. That could be it. At 100mg I don't think it's that you need a higher dose!

if you have short LP this cycle definitely ask to switch to Femara though. I would personally stick to CD3-7, I don't think you can afford to take it later with your history of late O recently.

Well give it one more " normal"cycle then. And evaluate then we'll make the call. Thank you both for your support!!

I think if it's not a financial hardship, it's always worth getting CD3 BW done, but I'd do it after next cycle since this one was weird.

3 day bloodwork will not tell you anything about LP but it can tell you other stuff. do you have to pay out of pocket? If so I would skip, if it's free may be worth it.

Free.
I was avoiding it bc I wasn't honest about breastfeeding at my appointment. So prolactin is one the things he has on the form to check. Id rather avoid it this cycle, especially if my hormones are out of whack with the cloud pattern I had going. I'll hang on to the Paper work and go next month though if I have not gotten PG
