View Full Version : Music and hormones

I was thinking about this, not necessarily as a sway factor as it's probably such a minuscule and short lasting thing if there is any effect and stressing about it would probably do more harm than good but have we actually looked into the types of music that people listen to vs their gender ratio? A quick Google search indicates there are studies linking listening to certain types of music with increases in certain hormones such as testosterone. It just might be an interesting thing to look into.
I thought of this because I love heavy metal, speed metal, hardcore exciting screaming angry music and I get so pumped when I'm listening to it that I can practically feel my testosterone levels rising lol. I've been listening to more relaxing, calmer music now but still sometimes I'll throw on a metal song and growl along lol. Please don't think I'm crazy for thinking there could perhaps be a tiny minuscule link lol. If there is it would probably only be extremes that raise or lower certain hormones but I suspect heavy speed metal with guttural growls may be a tad extreme.
Anyway it's just a thought I was having. Could do nothing to cut back on heavy music and to tune into some easy listening from time to time but it would be interesting to collect statistics or even do a short survey of what type of music we were listening to before we conceived what gender.

Yeah that's the kind of thing that people seem to get overly focused on. It's fine if you switch your listening preferences around a bit but I don't want anyone to get so focused on it that they decide "I"m going to now listen to Celine Dion every day from 11 11:30, Barry Manilow from 11:30 to 12, Enya from 12-12:30, and assorted classical from 12:30-1" Swaying is supposed to be in the back of your mind, not the front. :)
I'd actually wonder more if the type of people who are attracted to certain types of music might be more set for a particuar gender to start with, if that makes sense.

Lol no of course not that's why I was saying it wouldn't be anything major and I'm sure even if there were a link between hormone levels and types of music you listen to it would probably be about as indicative of gender ratio as whether your zip code ends in an even or odd number. It would just be something that would be interesting to look into for potential correlations :-P
I feel like if there were a huge link someone would have noticed by now "hey isn't it weird that people who listen to xyz only have sons/daughters!?!"
And I haven't really consiously switched music I'm listening to so much as I find myself playing more pop music than I used to. But that was happening even before my sway. I'm just getting old.
It's the correlation vs causation thing. Maybe women into heavy metal have more boys (obv that is an example I am basing on 0 data) but like you're saying do they like metal because they naturally have hormone levels that respond positively to that type of music? Do we notice a change in musical preference in people on a sway or on hormonal medications? I think the answer for these would pretty much be no (but you never know) and I think that even in studies that indicate an increase in testosterone after listening to certain music would not find that it is a long term increase nor one that would influence biology in any long term way. Maybe lead to increased perspiration, increased heart rate, mood changes, period.

And if someone is really prone to stress and is having a hard time destressing and finds that listening to some Sarah mclachlan in the car on the way to and from work tends to lower their stress levels, no harm done.
Music can be powerful in terms of altering mood so that's the biggest use I can see as far as our goals are concerned.

I don't know about this one- I don't listen to any "hard" music and I've got two boys. My radio is pretty much always tuned to the local Christian station, or I listen to my frank Sinatra Pandora station. I've never liked heavy metal, hard rock, or rap.
My zip code is an odd number, if we wanted to look into that haha

You might be on to something with the zip codes! My postal code is a palindrome, I wonder what that means for my future children?
I'm not swaying, just ttc. But I've started listening to a relaxation app to clear my mind from stressful thoughts when I go to sleep. Maybe that's something to try for people who are thinking and worrying too much.

It's an interesting theory but I've never really noticed if there's a correlation between the two. Personally, I used to be really into hard rock and metal but since having DS1, I don't listen to it much because I really need "calm" music with him being as intense as he is. LOL I still had DS2 despite changing what music I listen to but obviously there are way more factors at play regarding why a person may be more set to have one gender over another.

Well, just for fun, I have 2 boys and 1 girl and listen to mostly the latest hits on the radio and enjoy a range in music types. Not into heavy metal at all or country western. Our postcode here in Aus is an odd number. I don't believe in any things like this or the old wives tales such as if you crave sweet things when pregnant it means you're having a girl. Some of them are just a bit of fun. :)
