View Full Version : SMEP for couples in their 40s and/or men with low motility/low sperm count

I've just read and reread and reread this SMEP book and thought I'd share some important info in case others in their 40s want to try it. It is different than BD for three nights in a row starting at first positive OPK, skipping the 4th night, and then BD one last time on the 5 th night. You are advised to BD 'every other day' and take OPKs at the usual time in your cycle, but take them twice a day instead of just once (morning and afternoon). When you get your first positive OPK, BD that night (IF you didn't BD the night before that. If you BD the night before, skip this first night and BD the following morning instead). The next day (day after first pos OPK) BD that night (even if you BD that same morning as well). On the second day after the first pos OPK BD that morning and if you BD this morning then skip BD that night (this is your skip night). Then BD again the following night for one last try.

If your partner has sperm motility issues (or low sperm count) there is another variation to the SMEP and you have to move your BD pattern to an 'every other night' schedule, still ensuring that you hit the day AFTER your OPK is positive, as this day is the MOST important day. For this plan, you start off the same as above plan with BD 'every other day.' You need to take OPKs twice a day so you can really nail when your surge starts. You should see your second line appear as the surge starts and the second line may be 'almost' as dark as the control line but not quite. When you see this line, you go ahead and BD this night (IF you didn't BD the night before and IF your CM is excellent. Otherwise wait). When you get an obvious positive, BD this night IF you didn't BD the night before. iF you BD the night before (when your OPK was close to pos), then skip this night and BD the following morning or night. Remember that the day 'AFTER' your first definite positive is the MOST IMPORTANT day to BD on.

Atomic - hope this is OK to post. It's just some important info I found in SMEP book that I thought other ladies might find useful for trying with their partners. I have found it extremely useful, even though it doesn't involve swaying. :)

CHECK!

When you get your first positive OPK, BD that night (IF you didn't BD the night before that. If you BD the night before, skip this first night and BD the following morning instead).

so I bd the day before, skip the first night and then STOPPED.

The next day (day after first pos OPK) BD that night (even if you BD that same morning as well).

ok, so what do you do if its Wednesday & DH runs off to work at 6 am and then comes home, eats supper and falls asleep at 9??? ?

On the second day after the first pos OPK BD that morning and if you BD this morning then skip BD that night (this is your skip night). Then BD again the following night for one last try.

i swear this is toooo much weeknight sex for my DH....where is the I'M HORNEY AS HECK BUT DH IS STRESSED AND TIRED FROM WORK PLAN??? Viagra in his afterwork cocktail or what?!

HEEEEEELLLLLPPPPP?! :drama:

Please, please, please, can you please post these things just in ONE thread?? I know i'm repeating myself here but I answered this in the other place you posted it already and since it is my goal to have every question answered, it effectively doubles my work every time it happens.

Here is the answer I put in the other thread.

All they're saying is, keep going with EOD, and then if you think OPK is about to go positive, if you have good EWCM and you didn't just BD the day before, then BD that day. If you DID just BD the day before, then wait till the next day. What they're trying to do is be sure that for the attempt that is the MOST LIKELY to end in conception (O-2 and O-1) that you're in with an attempt one of those two days, and since this is for DH's that have low count, they are trying to be sure you have a day saved up before the attempt that's the most likely to end in conception.

The regular SMEP could possibly too depleting for a guy with low sperm numbers because he'd "shoot his wad" too early and then end up possibly having attempts with not much going on, on O-2 and O-1. Example, keep going with EOD, end up with attempt O-3, then if OPK is about to go positive he would end up possibly with attempts O-2, O-1, and O Day with NO days skipped to allow numbers to build back up again. If a gal doesn't have good EWCM, those attempts on O-3 and O-2 may possibly be duds because no sperm could survive, and then O-1 hubby would be totally depleted. So it would be better, in that scenario, instead of doing that, to have attempt O-3, skip O-2, hit it on O-1 with a nice big batch.

Thanks for clarifying Atomic. So tricky for women whose O changes around too isn't it? If we don't get a BFP this time then we will def go back to BD every second day throughout the next fertile window, in case daily BD depletes DH's count too much. We BD again one more time this morning, yet probably too late anyway as my BBT had risen up above the coverline. Do you think that given my BBT went up yesterday morning (but not above coverline), that I tried to O but it didn't happen? Soooo confusing.

Yes and that is MOST of us, at least with swaying haha.

I answered the BBT question in the other thread you asked it in. :p
