What dpo was the spotting? It doesn't sound too late if you got the bfp 3 days before AF was due. Sounds like perfect timing to me so congrats!

3 days before AF is due is not late or anything. That's all totally normal. Spotting can happen in very early pregnancy and again while nervewracking, is well within normal experiences.
