View Full Version : temps and OPK don't match up... ???

I'm currently on CD 22.
I've been charting my temps on Fertility Friend. I haven't been charting CM because it's dried up so much from the diet, supps, zyrtec....
I've also been taking OPKs since CD 13. Every day they have been negative.
Tonight for curiosity's sake, I removed my OPK results from Fertility Friend. Without the negative OPKs, Fertility Friend estimates ovulation around CD 19. With the negative OPKs, it says that I haven't ovulated yet.
If I remember correctly, I may have had some slight cramping around CD 18 and 19 (ovulation pain?).
What do I make of these signs not matching up?

How often are you testing and is your urine too dilulted.. could you have missed your surge?

I am also trying to solve an OPK puzzle. It seems I don't get a positive until the day of O according to my temps too. Good luck and i hope you solve your mystery ;)

it's very possible for OPKs to miss your surge if you just test once per day or drink a lot of fluids and have a short LH surge, I'd be incline to trust temps over OPKs because you can ovulate without ever getting a pos OPK

I hate testing!!! It is so much trouble, trying to remember not to pee for 4 hours. I can't drink anything other than my weak coffee before 1 pm to be able to last that long. Then I spend the rest of my day guzzling crystal light and peppermint tea to try to get the recommended amount in. How does anyone manage to test twice? I was contemplating getting up 4 hours after going to sleep but would have to ensure I have another 4 hours sleep after that to get an accurate BBT. I swear, sometimes this feels like a full time job!! :)

I did the same too.... when charting earlier this year. See how it goes this time now we are swaying up again lol

I used Clearblue Digital tests mid-afternoon, just once a day. They are expensive but they always worked and I never had any doubt of what a positive looked like - a smiley face is easy to decipher!

I've been testing every afternoon at 1:30. As some of you have mentioned, it's really hard to go four hours without peeing.
My first three or four tests were with Answer tests, after that I switched to ClearBlue Digital tests. I thought about testing twice a day to make sure I didn't miss the surge, but the tests are so pricey that I opted no to do it.
Coincidentally, the last time we DTD was on CD 19 (when Fertility Friend says that I possibly O'd). After that, DH got sick and we haven't been able to. So we thought our attempt was over. But if I'm going to go with Fertility Friend, I guess I'm in the 2WW!
pinkdreams- you are so right, this does feel like a full-time job!
Thank you TTC friends! I really appreciate the answers and support!

ACK!!!!!
I just entered this morning's temp on Fertility Friend and because the temp has dropped a bit, it no longer shows that I've ovulated. This puzzle is too dang confusing!!!

I've been testing every afternoon at 1:30. but the tests are so pricey that I opted no to do it.Try testing a bit later -let's say around 4pm, bcos maybe your LH needs more time to built up.
I was getting lots of -OPK ( or super faint lines which counts as negative I believe) when I was testing early. Around 4pm I'm getting accurate results :agree:
I'm testing once a day for the same reason - price!!!! It's not bcos I'm cheap, but I'm already spending a fortune on supps, so....
Temping is more reliable then OPKs :agree:

Thanks Zivic! I will switch my testing to later in the day :)
And I hear ya... between the OPKs, RepHresh, supps, etc.... we're spending a small fortune to get our daughter :)
ps- I hope you get your boy!

So I tested at 4 pm and it was POSITIVE!
Since the last time we DTD was on CD 19 and we're at day 22, should I leave well enough alone? Since it's been three days since we've DTD on account of DH being sick, I think the swimmers would have built up too much and we'd be swaying blue if we did it today.
Ah, I'm so nervous about all of this! I just need to calm down.

OK sold, I'll start testing around 4. Now how do I not pee between 12 and 4, maybe I'll have to nap all afternoon ;) I also got the digitals, it was actually cheaper on amazon to get the box of 20 than it was to get 2 boxes the store brand 3 pack.

September 29th, 2011, 07:53 PM
I got the box of 20 also and it's a good thing since I've been testing for eleven days straight!
In my defense, I O'd earlier in my previous cycles... day 14 for two cycles and day 18 for the last cycle.
Even though it was a challenge to not pee all afternoon, it was actually easier than going from 10:30 to 1:30. That was killer! Probably because I would eat breakfast at nine (that's the longest I could go without eating) and chugging down a tall glass of water with my fiber supp. Then I was dying until 1:30. With the afternoon wait, I was still dying but I also had DS coming home from school to distract me.
pinkdreams- I see that you're in Japan. Are you military?

Cool, I'm so glad it worked! :)
I'm afraid I cannot help with girl timing, haven't read about it that much, but you'll have a solid cut-off (3-4 days, right?)
But since we all know timing isn't the most important ( my brother and SIL conceived a boy with 3-4 days cut-off, no swaying of course), maybe BD today? Or you're waiting for O+12?
Oh, thank you for your blue wishes for me! :)

There wasn't a temp spike today, so I guess O hasn't happened yet. At this point I believe I'm at a 5-day cut-off, so I guess it isn't going to happen. I'm scared to DTD because we'd have too many swimmers. Maybe we could do a compressed frequent release and then DTD. Would it be enough to sway pink?
Although I kind of like the idea of waiting another month- more time to prep our house for another kid, more time to save $$ for a bigger car (our current cars won't fit an infant car seat and two boosters- we've tried), plus job changes that might happen for DH.

This afternoon's OPK was negative. Does that mean that O is past? If we DTD tonight would we be hitting an O+12?

September 30th, 2011, 07:32 PM
GOOD LUCK! fingers crossed for you!
im not too sure about all the timing stuff, but if you had a + yesterday, - today and still no temp shift then you are probably ovulating today, and will get a temp rise tomorrow, so maybe dtd early in the morning?
that would be a O+12/24 depending on what time you ovulate, and who can really pinpoint that to the exact hour.....
anyway thats probably what i would do.

do you check your cervix? For me that is the easiest way to know when to DTD for O+12, when it gets firm instead of soft. I still haven't gotten any positive OPK's but my temp was very low this AM so I'm thinking today, probably will get a + today too, that's how it's been the last 2 cycles. I panicked a little about only having one attempt and my PH was really great yesterday so we DTD in the afternoon, super shallow with a J&D. DH released last night and this AM, going to release again this afternoon then hoping for a firm cervix this PM to have another attempt. Good luck to you all!!!

My temp still hasn't risen. I'm now on CD 25 and really don't know what's going on.
DH was still sick last night so there was no action at our house. :(
I don't check my cervix. No matter how clean my hands are (and I'm an OCD clean-freak!), checking always seems to irritate it :(

Yes, that is the problem with temping, it's only helpful after the fact because it's the pattern that matters and the pattern is not always clear.
My way of thinking is that to get a truly accurate picture, you need both OPK and temps. OPK will warn you in advance of a potential O but you can miss your surge and/or get false positives if you have a fake O. Temping tells you after the fact whether or not you actually did O, but that doesn't help you know what to do before you O. They are both enough to drive a person insane and so that is why I don't blame anyone at all if you decide NOT to do OPK or temping and just DTD when you see EWCM...but with swaying, even that's not reliable if supps have dried you up!!!

I'm sorry I didn't see this sooner, but I would prob. have DTD again and trust that DH's illness had reduced his count. It all depends on how big a hurry you are in to conceive though.

First positive was a fake O which explains why your temps did not change.

Compressed frequent is always an option - just dump the first batch and use the second!!
If he's sick though, his count may be down anyway.

Yeah, I think I might lose my mind soon :)
And you're right about the EWCM.... I used to be able to use that as an indication, but I've been so dry this month compared to how I usually am that I can't really use it as an indicator.

A fake O? I've heard of a fake orgasm, but not a fake ovulation.

Oh, and my temp still didn't go up today.
And I got a negative OPK this afternoon.
I think my body is just playing games with me now. I'm not going to stress about it. As I said in my other post, we're holding off to see what happens with this job interview. I'll probably stress about that now (even though I keep telling myself not to stress!!!)

A fake O? I've heard of a fake orgasm, but not a fake ovulation.
It's where your body gears up to O but can't quite make enough estrogen to trigger the surge of LH so the egg never pops out, and it kinda stops everything and regroups and tries again in a few days.
