View Full Version : Any guesses appreciated - skull theory or nub

Finally had my 12 week scan today. By our dates we were 12w4d but bubs was measuring 13w2d. So happy because all the tests came back super low risk so pretty over the moon right now :) That said still curious about the gender...
I don't know whether I saw a nub or not. We did try to sway for blue, but I am quite keen on the idea of having 2 little girls as well so whatever the guess I'm keen to hear it. I'm also interested to know if you can tell anything from the skull shape. I have so many pictures but I don't think I can see a proper nub shot in any of them - that said I've never been very good at picking with other people so no surprise I can't pick my own lol.

Thanks for the guesses, this is going to be a long wait lol
Just wondering, did anyone have any particular reasons for thinking girl? The weird thing is with my last everyone said boy but I felt like it was a girl and she was :) This time, I have felt strongly that it's a boy. I still feel like it's a boy, even without anything to support that position. I will definitely update once I know for sure and keen to hear any other guesses :)

Here's some extra pictures, we were very lucky in that we got so many :) That said, I really don't think I can see a nub in any of them. For the people that have guessed, do you think there is a nub? I know I'm not very good at this.

Girl[emoji175]. The nub is long, flat, and parallel to the spine.

Thanks all who guessed, we should find out in around 6 weeks so not too long. I'll be very happy with another beautiful little girl, I am almost tempted to consider a 3rd if this is a boy just so I can try for another girl, but I honestly feel like this one is a boy. I can't explain it. I had the same with DD and strangely then everyone told me she was a boy.
I will let you know as soon as we find out :)

Well its not 100% a pinky as nubs can easily hide bits and change, so don't rule anything out yet:) And if it is a pinky and there may be another little person for the family on the horizon then I would still definitely recommend giving the HE swaying another go or a go if it wasn't HE you tried as it has great results:) When do you find out for current bump?:)

This is our second and final Bub, we'll be happy either way. I should be 14 weeks now so not long till we find out. Such a strange feeling, I just can't see this baby as a girl. It's like the polar opposite to the feeling I had with DD when everyone told me I was having a boy. I would love another little girl and I want to let myself get a bit excited about the possibility but I just can't at the moment because the feeling is so strong.

So confused right now. Had my second appointment with the obstetrician and she agreed to try and guess as baby is now over 14 weeks. We don't have any photos or anything from the scan (we didn't even know she would do a scan there in her rooms during the appointment), but she said she thinks it's a boy. She sounded fairly confident.
I can't read ultrasounds to save myself so I don't know what I saw and whilst my partner is pretty good, he was too busy chasing DD around the room to be able to pay enough attention. He has just accepted what the DR has said though so now I'm worried he's going to be disappointed.
I had started trying to tell myself it was another girl, like everyone who guessed here didn't even seem to hesitate compared to some of the other threads I've read but now I don't know what to think. My next scan isn't until 20/4 - this wait is going to destroy me lol

Thats exciting news!! We are only guessing off of a few short seconds of video:) It only takes baby to be at a slightly jaunty angle to not show the full of his or her bits when it comes to nub guessing which is why even the clearest picture is only ever given an 85% vote:) When will you be having your next scan?? I would put blue back in the running with your obs guess, if you buy anything I would keep the labels on lol but definitely back in the game!

That's interesting, would you say though that mine were clear pictures? And does that mean that ignoring my OB's guess, would the pictures suggest an 85% chance girl?
Yes I would love a sister for my little girl too, but we also thought it would be interesting to have a boy and a girl and I'm close to my brother so we figured she'll be getting a playmate no matter what.
My scan is scheduled for 20/4, so about a month away. I'm struggling with the wait lol spending all my spare time (fortunately I have almost none lol) looking at threads about people who got all girl guesses but then had boys. Doesn't seem to happen very often though so I think at this point, I'm going to be surprised whatever it is.

2 days till we find out now, the wait is killing me. Well really I'm just looking forward to getting to see my baby again because it feels like it's been ages. But there is a part of me that is feeling a bit sad because I feel like I've missed out on ever getting to have a son. I know we don't know for sure, but I feel like with 100% girl guesses it's very unlikely I'm going to hear anything other than girl on Thursday. My partner still thinks it's a boy, that's the part I'm dreading most. I don't want to tell him that he won't be having a son. I don't feel like it's a boy anymore, now I feel like it's a girl. Not sure if that's because of the nub guesses or what though. I can't talk about this with anyone, so I'm grateful to be able to post here.
Anyway, thought I'd also post in case anyone had any last minute guesses. Be kind of glad once I do find out for sure because maybe then I can stop being so obsessed with searching for nub shots lol

Hey, sorry about the delay in posting, was kind of an experience and not in a good way. Most importantly, Baby appears to be healthy but is now measuring 2 weeks ahead of my initial due date so bit nervous about delivery.
My partner wasn't sure he wanted to know the gender, so we asked them to write it on a piece of paper. The sonographer wasn't very nice; we didn't get any nice photos this time unlike last time and she didn't say anything really except to tell me when I asked one question about the head that if I asked about everything, it was going to be a very long scan.
Anyway we got to the end and she told us to wait outside. Then she brought us one sheet of photos - for my 12 week scan I had like 20 photos, for this one, which was longer, we only got 7 and they are all terrible, all blurred and only of the face, nothing else. But you can't actually make out anything on the face. I almost feel like crying because it was just such a horrible experience. She completely forgot about our request for the gender and then when I asked the receptionist, she told us she'd gone to lunch. She said she'd call and write it down for us though which was nice. But then we could hear that the sonographer hadn't really checked - it was a long phone call for only one question. So when the receptionist got off the phone, she handed us a piece of paper but told us it was only a 60% guess.
I didn't tell DP, but I opened the envelope when we got home and checked. It said, 60% only - girl. I don't even know even know how to take this. I was really hoping that after today I would know one way or the other and could just get on with things, but this doesn't really make me feel very confident at all. I paid $285 for that scan, I was so excited this morning and now I just feel so sad. I feel like anyone who wants to be a sonographer and trains to do morphology scans could surely show a little compassion for pregnant women who just want to be able to enjoy one part of the pregnancy experience when they get to see their baby. She wouldn't even let us listen to the heart beat.
Anyway, sorry bit of a vent. I don't know if this counts as an update or not - 60% doesn't seem like great odds to me. The only thing that makes me feel a little better is knowing that next week, I have another appointment with my OB and she will do an ultrasound then and maybe I'll get to have a look at my baby in a comfortable setting. I'll ask her about the gender then because DP can't come with me to that appointment, and hopefully I'll have an answer then to update.

That sounds terrible! I' so glad LO is nice and healthy for you thats the main thing :) But I would ring up and complain about the scan especially if you have paid alot! of money for it. If they are not helpful on the phone and don't offer a refund or another scan then I would let them know that you will be leaving a google review for them telling people how poor their service is. As for the 60% guess I think that you can still not rule anything out with that so lets see if your ob can see for you :) xx

Gosh, sorry to hear about your experience, but glad everything looks good with your baby! You are so right, you would think that people go into that profession b/c they like sharing the joy with parents!!! Maybe she was having a bad day, but still absolutely no excuse! Thanks for updating! Hope your OB can provide some more insight on gender for you :)

OMG it's a boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am in so much shock right now. I thought I was unsure about the gender but I must have really thought it was a girl because I was so shocked when she said boy. I don't think I would have believed her if I hadn't seen all the bits myself, she pointed each bit out to me lol. I must have given the impression that I didn't want a boy, because she asked, oh you don't want a boy? And I had to say that no, I'd just really thought it was a girl. She had another look but there was no mistaking it.
I don't know what to do with myself, I almost feel like it's a different baby now because I had this whole idea in my head of how I was going to have these 2 girls and sisters and all that and now, well, I know it's the same baby it's always been and I even thought it was a boy until about 13-14 weeks, but I honestly feel a bit confused right now. Has anyone else ever experienced that?
Anyway, thank you everyone for your support and guesses. I don't know how many people get 100% one guess and then get the opposite gender but I'm guessing it must be pretty rare.

OMG OMG I am so so so happy for you!! :bluecheer:
your feelings are totally normal!! It is what so many of us experience!! Of course I had that feeling very strongly with DS 3 because I was just sooo sure he was a girl and it felt like "she" had been taken away and replaced with a changeling. But more than that, I will admit I felt that even getting my DG. a little sorrow in that moment realizing that getting a girl meant that I'd never have another boy.

Thanks everyone, I'm feeling a bit calmer now and finally feel like I'm starting to accept that it's a little boy. My partner got to feel him kick for the first time last night as well which was a bit special.
Lol I'll be in trouble if he's more snugly than my little girl, she is so affectionate and daddy just won't do so we're really hoping that by September, she's a little more independent.
We did try to sway, I don't know if it was a very good sway as we had some significant hiccups between appendicitis and a stressful situation at work but I will post the details. In short, we really just tried to get ourselves both into the best health possible. We took all the recommended supplements, I forced myself not to skip meals and gained some weight and we both worked out. I didn't ovulate my first month of trying, I think bc I was so nervous about ttc and because of the incident at work. Second month I ovulated as usual and we made 3 attempts - one the night before I got the positive opk bc I had a feeling and then that morning and the following night. It was over the Xmas holiday so I had no stress and we were happy :)
I fill out the rest of the details, we also purchased a plan so special thank you to Atomic for all the personalised advice and support.

Helen, please start your own thread (just click open the ultrasound forum and once you do that, you'll see the "start new post" option - that is what people miss, is the opening the forum) Since this is actually another person's thread for their ultrasound, you'll get a lot more people viewing your post that way!!
