View Full Version : Thoughts on these old wives tales?

I recently got my bfp (swayed pink) and am about 4 weeks today. I'm curious what you guys think about the following...any truth to these?
- I've had cramps on my right side for the past few days. I can't remember what I had with my DD's. Could right cramps mean boy?
- Hcg levels are within range, but on the low side. I googled it and people say that can also be boy. Any truth?
- We had two attempts, one pm and one am. I think it's the am attempt that did the trick. I've seen people say that am = boys. Thoughts on this?
Thanks ladies! Curious to see what people's experiences have been with these!

Most of my OWT pointed to girl and I'm very much having a boy! They're just fun or torture depending on how you look at it! [emoji12]

Max! With Ashtyn, Brad worked third shift. So we only could get morning attempts in.

Mommy, so both boys were am? Your daughter was pm?

Yay congrats!
You cannot tell what side you ovulated on on the basis of cramps. You develop eggs in both sides every month and many of us have found wicked cramps/pains on the side that we later find we DIDN"T O from.
You cannot tell what side a baby has implanted on the basis of cramping after implantation has occured. If it was possible to feel a tiny ball of cells in your uterus pregnancy and childbirth would be so excruciating we could never endure it. It is totally normal to feel right sided and then left sided and then middle pains as various parts of your uterus grow and stretch. There is also more blood flow and nerve endings on the right side so it's actually very very common to feel more on the right than the left side.

Oh whoops hit "post" prematurely there.
There is an on average correlation with some things like HCG levels during pregnancy but it is like height - average across a whole population and you cannot tell where you fall on the curve on the basis of that one thing alone. You can easily have a man or a woman that is 5 ft. 8. You can easily have a man or woman that is 5 ft. 6 or 5 ft. 10. You can even easily have men who are very short, or women who are 6 ft tall. So you cannot use that number to predict anything about gender and beyond that, the #1 reason why HCG levels seem "lower" than they should be is that you miscalculated what day you actually got pregnant on so not only are we going off of "height" we are going off of "height" without knowing a person's age, so you could easily have (still using analogy here, not saying you are having a boy) a "boy" who is 5 ft. 2 and just hasn't reached his full height yet, if you see what I'm saying.
If swaying works, it is because something about it confers a benefit to the odds of survival/reproduction of a particular gender baby. So things like diet and personality and exercise all sway because they indicate something about the environment in which we live that may mean that a boy or a girl has a better chance of growing up to pass on genes to future generations than the opposite sex would. Things like one attempt ~probably~ sway because they indicate either something about the presence of a protective mate and/or the overall fitness and health of that mate (better sperm health) Again this may indicate that one gender vs. the other has a better chance of surviving to reproduce.
So, I see absolutely NO possible way that having sex in the morning vs. the evening could possibly bestow any advantage and nor do I see how something like that could have possibly evolved. If you don't have the nutrients for a baby boy to grow up big and strong at 6 am, you don't have them at 6 pm.

Atomic, thank you so much for that! Helps put me at ease, although to be perfectly honest I'm just so happy to be pregnant and just praying for healthy. If we get a boy after my naturally girl lifestyle (big time coffee/wine drinker, vegetarian), LE diet, femara, and DH on SSRI's, then we were meant to have that little man in our life and will be so extremely grateful for him. :awe:

Max-all of my attempts for all kiddos were PM attempts & resulted in 2 boys 1 girl. Chinese calendar was wrong for all 3! I had cramps on the right side this time around BFP that eventually subsided. I tried the ring over the belly for the first time & it was right! I had DH hold it over my belly since he didn't know what it meant. I also didn't have a lot of MS with this baby, only moments of queasiness. Fun to look at the diff wives tales & see if they're true, but I don't really think there's much to them lol.

Lola that's great to hear!! I know most of them are old wives tales, but the right side cramping made me pause after hearing about Rhamzi theory.

Max I've heard the theory AM = girls [emoji23]. Ramzi i have no idea as i wasn't aware of it with my boys. Also chinese calendar is wrong for some of mine.
I tend to have had my morning sickness increase with each pregnancy. My 1st 2 boys not so much but the last 3 got worse with each of them. Usually settled around the 18-20 week mark too which was longer than I expected too.

Thanks Max. It wasn't really vomiting ms but a continuous nausea. I was snacking alot and brushing my teeth was the worst. That required pep talks before id even start [emoji23][emoji23]

Wow funny you say that...brushing my teeth lately has not been fun. And yesterday a piece of hair got stuck in the side of my mouth and made me dry heave. [emoji51] Really hoping it doesn't get much worse...

And after seeing several people send Dr. Ramzi himself $10 and their ultrasounds and he guessed them WRONG, it has proven to my satisfaction there is nothing to Ramzi anyway, even IF it were possible to tell where your baby implanted, which it IS NOT.

I'm so happy you finally got your bfp max! Congratulations!
As atomic has said many times -- OWT mean nothing. Mine were ALL boy save for moon phase for DD. I had strangers guessing boy even.
Plus, they're not even consistent. I've seen carrying high/low mean both boy/girl, can find a Chinese Gender Chart to say either no matter what, and even different opinions on moon phases.
I know we like to feel control in some sort of way by trying to predict/feel prepared, so I empathize!

Congrats on your bfp... are you going to wait for a gender scan or have the harmony/nifty test done? Most things were correct for me..ramzi..chinese calender..carrying high..and eating ice ****s for cravings which ive heard alot of girl mums crave... i would try and forget all the signs though or you will go crazy until you find out xx

Thanks five! Yes I'm definitely finding out. My first ultrasound is 8/15 and I'm sure that's when I'll find out my testing options.

No, you could have a NIP-T (also called "nifty") test done, or a CVS or amnio. Those things are accurate. NOthing else is, even early scans.

Max...:bighug:
DD3 was on my right, DD4 was on my left
Only 2 babies i know my HCG levels on are DD3 and DD4. DD3 was very average with her numbers and DD4 was actually on the low end. My progesterone was also low with DD4.
DD1 was conceived PM, DD2 was conceived AM and DD3 and DD4 were both AM.
The funniest part is some were even born at those times! DD1 was born 11:15 PM, DD2 was born 9:30 AM, DD3 was born 9:45 AM and DD4 was born 9:30 PM

Hi B!!! Thanks for sharing! How funny about the timing...thinking about it my girls were both PM attempts and were born at night. So curious if this one would be a morning baby? Wonder if there's something to that??

There's not believed to be any correlation between time of conception and time of birth. Most babies are born from night to morning and NOT during the day, it's believed as some sort of leftover protective force because you have a baby when you're home safe and sound (or hidden away in your nest/burrow) and not out and about where a predator could find you.
