View Full Version : Quick Folate question

Hey all, hopefully this is an easy one for you all to answer!

I am currently taking around 1200mcg folate per day. I read that it is more easily absorbed if you take it spread out rather than all in one go and that otherwise you will just pee out any excess, so I've been taking 3 separate doses of my 400mcg tablets.

However folate is quite expensive (compared to folic acid!), and I've noticed that it would be much more cost effective to buy the 1000mcg tablets (and probably still a 400mcg folic acid tablet later in the day), and just take fewer doses. But I was wondering if it would still be effective to take 1000mcg in one go, or would it end up getting passed straight through my system?

Seems like a really silly minor little question to bother you all with now that I've got it written down, but I appreciate any advice anyway!

I took 2000 mcg and took two 1000 mcg pills. I don't remember exactly how I did it but I think I took one in the morning then another later in the day. I know Atomic has said it's best to spread them out. Could you get the 800mcg tablets instead and take 1.5 tabs? Like you could split the first one in half and take one in the morning then the other in afternoon. For the remaining 400mcg just split the 800 in half and save the other half for your dose the next day. That way you're only using 1.5 pills a day instead of 3.

Actually now that I think about it, I think I split my tablets in half and took it 4x a day because I remember using a pill cutter.

I prefer the smaller doses because the way folate works, your body takes what it needs and then excretes the rest, so that way it's better absorbed if you have a small amount coming in 3x a day
