Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has experience with the cooper iud for contraception. I'd prefer to avoid hormonal methods as we will most likely be ttc for a 3rd early next year.

Also any idea if it would affect a potential boy sway (if we don't go HT)?

Thank you

Hi,

I have the copper iud its been 3 and half years now, although I will be having it removed this week. It worked great obviously no pregnancy, regular periods however slightly heavier cramping. Other then that its been put for 3 and half years now. I have been getting it checked by my doctor once a year or so just for piece of mind, I've never tried to fel the strings my self nor did it bother my husband.

But lately for over 6 mo ths now i've been getting cramping around the area it is, i've had ultrasounds and everythibg seems fine so i feel like its starting to cause me some discomfort, but other then that it was all good.

I think Atomic will advise you in regards to the boy sway.

Good luck with your boy sway i will be swaying for boy as well but end of next year so i will probably be after you.

We honestly don't know and thus when I don't know I generally advise against it.

But as long as you're willing to have it out 3 months or so in advance any residue from it should have time to leave your body. We jsut don't totally know for sure as so few people have used the copper one.

I had my copper iud removed in October and am now 10 weeks pregnant. I’ll update you once I find out gender!

Thanks for your reply bluedust - your experience seems positive. From my reading the cramping after a few years seems to be common - maybe they need to be changed sooner than recommended.
Good luck with your sway too - I'm still in 2 minds about what to do!

Thanks for the reply atomic. Will have to figure out whether it's worth getting it in only to have to take it out within a yr to prepare for ttc
