I'm unsure when we will try to conceive sometime this year but I would like to take folic acid just in case I do end up pregnant. It could be up to several months to a year before I end up pregnant, is there any reason I shouldn't d take folic acid the entire time? Thank you!

If you're dieting I would take higher dose folic/folate. If you're just eating normally for now I'd stick with 400-800 (so like the amount in any standard woman's vitamin)

Thank you for the quick response! Just verifying that there's no bad side affects for taking it that long?

We believe that the excess is just excreted through your urine but there is a % of people who don't tolerate folic acid well and have to take folate instead. If you take folate it's safe for everyone, folic is fine for most people but some do need to avoid folic and take only folate.

We all take folic acid or folate since it is the only nutrient proven to prevent birth defects and health issues when taken PRIOR to conception. It's not a sway thing, it is a healthy pregnancy thing.
