View Full Version : Exercise after a D&C

I had a D&C yesterday at 8.5 weeks (pretty much just a gestational sac was removed as baby stopped growing around 5 weeks) and I forgot to ask the doctor when I can start going back to the gym. Does anyone know what the recommendation is? I just have some very, very light bleeding and cramping so far today and the doctor thinks that's all I should probably have and that it shouldn't last too long. Planning on doing 60 minute sessions again - walking/exercise bike - and would start off less intense (haven't exercised since I got BFP) but just wondering if I can start that early next week or if my body needs more time. Thanks.

3-5 days for less strenuous exercise, 2 weeks for things like super intense weight lifting or really vigorous running/jumping like tennis matches and stuff. (literally no one on here ever does anything like that!!)

Thanks Atomic. I'll start back in a couple days then.
Couple more unrelated questions... After my 2nd miscarriage in December, I started DH on OLE (500 mg a day I believe) and I did 100-200 mg of CO-Q10 per day. We both did that for about 5 weeks before getting pregnant this time. With DH, his SA last October showed that he had a high sperm count (99 million) but his morphology was 4% (so, normal, but low end of normal). Do you think it's worth having him do OLE again for swaying girl/improving sperm health? With me, given that my doctors are really starting to push baby aspirin now (I talked about this in my last PM to you), do you think COQ-10 is maybe not ok for me? I read somewhere on here you say that maybe it makes blood more clotty? (apologies if you didn't say that or I misunderstood what you said - just feeling like I remember reading that). I want to take it for blood sugar lowering/egg quality/anti-inflammation but if I have something going on with my blood, as the docs suspect, should I not? Or wait to ask the RE about it when I meet with her next month?

March 11th, 2018, 03:16 PM
Let's ask the RE about that one. Coq10 can interact with blood thinners and make them less effective. I have seen enough people take coq10 and see no improvement on egg quality that I seriously doubt it really does much of anything that I would be inclined to have you skip it anyway even just on the off chance it could be doing anything harmful.
Believe it or not, without exception, every one of my clients whose hubbies have had SA had morph 2-4%. Morph on its own is not a big deal (and honestly, at 4% it's still higher than 75% of every SA we've had on here.) I am not sold on OLE doing anything, but if he's willing and you want to try it for pink, by all means.
I think we talked about this already would go onto a lower, but not low carb diet like the Zone or South Beach and be sure you're getting a good level of healthy fat.
I would also ask about turmeric. I don't want you to take it yet, but ask them about it. Turmeric + baby aspirin can be a double whammy for blood thinning so I am pretty sure they'd not want you to take them both together (and if they don't think it's an issue, I DO! LOL) but turmeric in lieu of aspirin might be a possibility. It's got antiinflammatory properties.

Thanks atomic. That's interesting about morphology. I wasn't really concerned about it since his sperm count is high anyways. But I'll have him do the OLE again.
I'll ask the RE about tumeric and CO-Q10. I'm trying to figure out my diet since I'm going back on it again this week, so I'll try to work on lowering carbs. I know before this last bfp I usually ate between 150-225 g of carbs per day (average 1,500 calories). Does that sound right or should it be lower than that?
atomic sagebrush
March 12th, 2018, 12:19 PM
Yes I'm happy with that level of carb intake. Not too high, not too low. :)
The morph is not generally believed to be a problem in isolation - just like you say, no cause for concern as long as the count is high because that is still plenty of sperm to find the egg.

Hey ABC just wanted to check on you and see how you are doing?
Thanks Desi :) I am... OK. Some days are better than others. The past couple of days have been pretty hard and I've been crying a lot. It's a process I guess. The HCG isn't gone completely from my system yet - I'm still getting positive HPTs and I have to get another HCG test on Monday. So that's frustrating. We're now also waiting for results from some blood tests I had done last week by a fertility specialist to see if there is a blotting clotting disorder or chromosome issue - so that is stressful. So, hanging in there. Thankful for this community though - as I told Pbn3 the other day, I feel in many ways that I'm getting more support from here right now than from many of my own family members. For example, you specifically checked in on me today, when my own father and stepmom haven't checked in on me once since I had my D&C two weeks ago. I'm finding that with recurrent pregnancy loss/infertility, in addition to the heartache of the pregnancy loss, also comes with strained family relationships. It's been interesting. People who haven't experienced these kind of losses/ pain don't apparently understand just how hard it really is to go through. So thank you for checking in :) It really does mean a lot.

I'm so sorry you are feeling this way, family can be the worst sometimes, even my own husband said something so hurt the last time I had a mc and sometimes I wonder why I kept trying. I will be here for you as much as you need me to be I so understand where you are coming from, my test almost took 2 and half months to go negative with my first mc it really sucked, because at first I thought I was pregnant again and then had to go through those feelings all over again. Get all them tears out love it will get better.

I just wanted to chime in and say after our 20 week loss I felt the same. I have never felt so alone in my life. No one contacted me to see how I was doing. It was like the world went on but mine didn't. In fact I still harbour resentment toward my family for it.

Oh my goodness - 2 months? That must have been so frustrating! I hope mine zeroes out within the next week or two. HPTs are getting lighter but doing so SO slowly. I think tomorrow the HCG test will show it's gone down from last week and they'll tell me all is good with that. Thank you for your continued support :) :)

TP - Oh wow, I'm sorry you're going through that with your in laws. You've been through so much too - it's just so hard. I don't get why people find it so hard to understand just how painful miscarriages can be. But, I guess I probably didn't truly "get it" either before I'd gone through it. Yea I'm SO angry at my dad and stepmom right now. I just cannot understand how they can be so uncaring/unconcerned when they know what I've been through the past 8 months. Ugh.

Thanks Mamabird :) Yea - the loneliness is what I've talked to several on here about - I just don't feel like anyone around me gets it. DH is trying, and trying harder now than he was at the beginning now that he sees how hard I'm taking it all, but even he doesn't really understand. It's such a lonely, painful experience.

Just found out (by looking on my online portal account - I haven't talked to the doctor personally yet) that I have a MTHFR mutation. Atomic - hoping to ask more questions of you after I've talked to the doctor (hopefully tomorrow). Trying to not freak out - I know this is a common mutation. And I had two healthy boys before these miscarriages so it must be possible for me to be able to carry healthy pregnancies with it. Anyways - I may PM you again soon. We're also still waiting for the results of DH and I's chromosome tests and I still have to have a uterus ultrasound next month to see if there is maybe something in my uterus (polyp, fibroid, etc.). I've been taking folate only since I started my sway one year ago.. Initially I was taking between 800-1,600 per day and then I upped it to 1,600-2,400 after my 2nd m/c.

So what we may need to do is to not only have you take folate, but to AVOID things with folic acid added to them. This is stuff like breads, cereals, pastas, and even things you may not expect like coffee drinks, power bars, etc. Check the label and skip anything that has FA added to it. We should also add in the lowest dose B12 you can find 2x a week.

Ok - yea I remember reading posts on here of you telling others with MTHFR to avoid folic acid. It seems pretty tough to do since it seems like it's in everything :( I haven't heard from the doc yet but think I may call today to see what she thinks about that result. I've been reading that there are different degrees of severity with the mutation, based I guess on if you have the mutation from both parents or just one. What's crazy to me about this is that with DS1, I was taking a prenatal w/ folic acid plus eating a TON of cereal, breads, pasta - all of that. So I'm wondering how it didn't affect me/ the pregnancy then. Who knows. Anyways - I'll update you after I hear from the doctor.

I wonder the same thing about conceiving my boys too ABC! I didn’t know I had the gene back then either.
Interesting about the b12. It helps with absorption I’m guessing atomic?

Emshe - do you have a MTHFR mutation too?
I talked to the RE's office this afternoon and the person who gave me all my results said that there are two types of MTHFR mutations and the type that I have is not a big deal, it's not something they treat at all! It's apparently the other type that they are concerned about and recommend high folate for, and that basically my result should be considered "normal". Huh?! So now I'm a little confused. Going to hopefully ask the RE more questions about it when I have the uterus ultrasound in a few weeks.

I know mine is the A1298C but I don't know if it is homozygous or heterozygous. My online record said "single mutation", so maybe it's heterozygous? I spoke to the RE's assistant today, not the RE so wasn't able to ask as many questions as I wanted to. Do you do anything treatment-wise for yours? Do you take baby aspirin?

I haven’t taken aspirin, I used clexane with my HT BFP but still lost her. I don’t know that it was this though as i never knew like you with the boys and those pregnancies were fine.

Yep, to all that. They put it in too much stuff, for sure, and I agree I know of several people who had perfectly normal pregnancies taking folic acid and eating it in everything. It's something that we are only just beginning to learn about - it very well may be something that takes a kid or two to start causing issues.

I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriages. Have you done any testing to see if they can find a cause? They did all of that for me and didn’t find anything- ultimately just concluded it was “bad luck” 3 times in a row. But I did go on to conceive two healthy twins - and lots of ladies on here have also had 3 or more m/c and went on to have healthy babies!! Yes, to answer your question though I was on clomid. Two of my m/c we’re on clomid as well. But I definitely think the clomid is why I conceived twins.

I felt the same way - relieved everything was normal but also frustrated that there wasn’t something they could “fix”. The good news though is that it probably means the m/cs were random chromosome issues and shouldn’t affect your ability to conceive a healthy baby. I know that doesn’t make going through it easier though.
If you haven’t already talked to atomic about this she usually recommends higher doses of folate for those of us with lots of losses. FWIW I also took CoQ10 for several weeks before this conception - for egg quality. Don’t know if it helped at all or not but may be worth a try.
Hope your [emoji304] baby is coming soon!!
