View Full Version : Last chance for a daughter.....

This is my first post, although I've been following stories and threads for a number of months.

I have 3 boys and am so longing for a little girl to complete our family.

This time last year we'd considered doing PGD but I just couldn't go ahead with something so intrusive and potentially financially crippling with no guarantee if success.

I started my AF yesterday and have a billion eleventh hour questions /concerns after all my preparation for a natural gender sway.

I am 38....hubby is 43
I an slight with BMI of about 19 so couldn't go too crazy with diet. I've been vegetarian for 2 years ( wasn't when I conceived my sons....) I have tried to skip breakfast or at least wait 4 hours after waking before eating and cut out snacks.
I have been walking to and from work for 6 months so total 1.5 hours 5 days a week.
I have obtained clomid through a friend which I plan to use.
My hubby has agreed to cut out red meat for next 2 weeks and has been taking olive leaf. He is fit and cycles a few days a week. We both drink red wine about 1 glass per night. Neither of us smoke.
Questions - day 3-8 or 5-10 for clomid? Should hubby FR prior to attempt? Should I use a douche ?Should I have cut off? Just 1 attempt? Do I use OPK ?Should I try AI?
Any other tips?

I'm excited and feeling optimistic but also terrified of doing all the prep and compromising my chances with messing up some of the finer details

I don't have answers to your questions but feel like I have skimmed over some answers to your questions in the sample girl sway if you have access. I would definitely use opks. I'm swaying blue after 2 girls so got no tips (again sorry). I did also just want to say good luck and hope you get your girl :-)

Hi and welcome Bonnie!

You don't have to go crazy on diet and in fact I want you to hold steady where you're at given your BMI.

I want you on CD 3-7 for Clomid. It's only for 5 days, not 6. I feel we see better results for conception on those days rather than starting on CD 5.

Please no douching with Clomid, douching hasn't worked and has cut odds of conception too far.

Cutoff has not worked and really cuts odds of conception. YOu will also not be able to predict your ovulation in advance on Clomid anyway. Timing with cutoffs has been widely studied and all reliable studies found 50-50 boys and girls conceived every cycle day. I would start off with one attempt at positive OPK. After your one attempt, you may want to do every 4 day method (unprotected sex every 72-96 hours) in case of delayed ovulation, which sometimes happens on Clomid.

Frequent release has not worked and really cuts odds of conception. If you want to give it one month, you can try it but needs to be dropped in the future. In future months I"d either have hubby do regular release every 2-4 days with one attempt OR e4d method starting after your period ends and going through till whne you're sure you've ovulated, even if that means going all the way through till your next period begins.

Yes you'll need to either do OPK or E4d method on Clomid because the Clomid affects when you will ovulate and you can't predict it without assistance.

I don't recommend doing AI for anyone.

Thanks Atomic for your quick and detailed reply. Its actually made my day as receiving the clomid late on day 4 had me unsure whether to commence or not so I'm I plan to start next cycle and do day 3-7 as suggested. I've heard this can promote twins? Not to keen on that but willing to take risk. My friend had hyperstimulation on her round one and only found this put with scans ( which I won't have as not monitoring) but I've heard this is quite rare??
Good news about no AI - this was kind of pushing it with hubby!
Will continue with lots of exercise and non crazy diet.
Hubby will try FR and one attempt first month and fingers crossed.
Thanks again

Oh well if you just got it, it's ok to take it this month if you want to! Totally up to you.

I know the conventional wisdom is that taking it CD 5-9 is supposedly better for avoiding multiples BUT I've seen gobs of singletons conceived on 3-7 and plenty of twins even on CD 5-9 and I just don't find it's really such a thing as they make that out to be. Plus since the CD 5-9 is lower odds of conception overall, it just seems like even if there is a small difference it isn't worth it.

Yes hyperstimulation on 50 mg Clomid is really quite rare. Less than 5 people that I know of. We have only ever had one set of triplets on Clomid - and ironically, it was in a woman who WAS being monitored by her doctor...the doctor only saw one follicle and told her to try but I think he missed a few, LOL. We have actually had more naturally conceived triplets than Clomid triplets!

Keep me posted how it's going and let me know if you need anything.

So its been a couple of weeks and a lot has happened.....
My Dad who has been terminally I'll for a while passed away last week so needless to say its been an emotional time. As much as I am exhausted from everything I am still committed to the plan to attempt this month and as horrible as it sounds...a week of grief and drinking red wine and coffee and not consuming much else has probably put me in a good position to ttc my girl. Presumably from the stress, AF arrived 5 days earlybso I need to start clomid tomorrow.... I am doing day 3 start. Do I take it at morning or night? With or without food? Any other instructions? I arranged it through a friend and not being monitored so a bit anxious. Hubby will release daily til I get Pos ovulation test and do 1 attempt. Any other advice? I'm teary and exhausted from the travel and the funeral. My poor Dad. He had 2 step granddaughter's but always wanted a daughter for me.I think I want this lore than ever now too

Oh gosh I'm so sorry to read this - my condolences.

I would take the Clomid at night to prevent any side effects (you'll still have them but sleep thru them) You can take it with or without food, whatever you feel is best (I'd have a little something with it because I find I always have upset stomach even from things that aren't supposed to upset my stomach) 50 mg, no more when unmonitored.

Be sure you guys only do the daily release this month and then let it drop for better odds of conception. Only do 1 attempt for 2 months then go to e4d then to e4d plus one.

Thank you atomic for your quick reply. I'll start taking clomid tonight. Hoping I don't get any crazy side effects. I'm hoping and praying for success in first attempt... Not sure I can sustain this for long. I'm down to 49kg from the stress so BMI under 18 so as poor taste as it seems this month may be my best chance after everything that's happened.
Should I be maintaining the diet during the 2ww?
I'm used to it now so no big deal, just interested in other tips which might help the baby stick.

Yes you need to do the diet all month long, but it's very very VERY important that you do not lose ny more weight. Please up calories until the weight loss stops (trying to stay in limits on protein and fat, but if you need to go up a bit on those too, do so). You're below my absolute cutoff point - now obviously this is stress related but we cannot have you lose any more weight, your ovulation will stop.

Yes , being diligent with eating better now life has settled down. Started the clomid last night and no effects yet. Will get some OPK 's as well....its 7-10 days after last clomid day to expect ovulation if I'm correct? Hubby has business trip around them so begging him to postpone! Think he's back on 9 or 10 but don't want to miss window. I've also heard that afternoon sex favours girls so hoping to include that if possible. Any last minute things that can help and can't hurt I will try to include.

No 5-10 days on average, some take longer. It's very very rare to O before the 5th day after stopping the Clomid.

I probably would have had you take the Clomid later in the month in that case but let's just hope it works out for us.

I have not found that the time of day you have sex matters, but if that works out and you feel good about it that's fine!

So I'm feeling optimistic...
We did one attempt ( missionary pos, no orgasm )...hubby had to leave next morning for 4 days so had one shot. Got very dark pos OPK next morning so that made me feel great!
Just got to play the waiting game now.
Thanks atomic for all your advice. Will keep you posted

Nice! Good luck and pink dust headed your way!

So AF arrived , 2 days earlier than expected too, although my cycles are a little unpredictable....I had been quite optimistic and had lots of phantom pregnancy signs in the lead up but unfortunately not my month.

I felt quite emotional and deflated but after 2 days I've picked myself up and ready for round 2 and starting 5 days clomid again. I kept exercising a lot in the 2ww to help with anxiety and tried to stick to diet. Weight remained same anyway so I've not sabotaged my of my sway methods. Hubby did a lot of FR in lead up from AF to attempt ( every day )/so wondering if that needs to calm down a bit?

Other than adjusting that if needed, i will sick o the exercise and clomid as my main strategies ....I've a busy month ahead as were moving house so hopefully it will fly and I'll get my BFP as am early Christmas gift.

Keep you posted!

So....I'm kind of stressing out...month 2 on climid was not comfortable.... Pains, bloating, hot flushes.... Hubby drooped the FR so we could do 1 attempt in window....BUT...attempt last night mightchave gone wrong ( TMI warning....) Did missionary position, no orgasm....but I think I was over zealos with the shallow penetration at the end and ended up with most of the stuff on the sheets and a bit inside me. I layed still with knees up til I slept but I'm wondering if not enough got inside me. Now hubby wants to do another attempt but I'm worried that is TTC boy strategy.... I'm gutted if I've ruined another month but hopeful that might still he successful??? Advice and options welcome!!

atomic sagebrush
November 27th, 2018, 12:12 PM
Do not do shallow penetration. I don't ever recommend shallow penetration for anyone because it has REALLY cut odds of conception (and there's a whole story I have proving that this is true, if you'd like to hear it) and NO ONE on Clomid should ever do shallow penetration.

I can't tell you what to do really - I'll give you my standard rule of thumb which is, "for best odds of pink stick with one attempt, for best odds of conception - but still good chance of pink, have another attempt." But we have a complication here in that you've been on Clomid 2 months now, this month you had a lot of side effects, and it sounds to me like that was really a non-attempt. I would have you attempt again ASAP but it is of course your call to make.

Thanks atomic. Hubby is now away for work but returns in 2 days. If by chance I get a pos opk then ( will be cd17-18 so maybe too late....) then we might do another more enthusiastic attempt!

UPDATE!! Got BFP today. Tested for hell of it ( still a few days off AF due...but getting impatient.) Though i saw a super super faint line but wasn't sure if my imagination so tested later today with better quality early detection test and line came up almost instantly, definitely no question! Quite overwhelmed but excited and cautiously optimistic. Took atomics advice and had 2 attempts 4 days apart from clomid finishing....think this was the key. Thank you!
Hubby interstate so doesn't even know yet! Praying for my forth and last baby to finally be my little girl. Also hoping its not twins given such an early positive! ?!

I don't find that most early positives are twins. I get this question a lot and I've never seen any trend that direction!

On the twin question - I am carrying twins (conceived first cycle on non medically necessary 50mg Clomid where I had little to no side effects and actually worried whether I had ovulated at all!) and my bfp was around 11dpo. I'm unsure about exactly as I wouldn't use opks as I found them to put my mental state firmly in boy mom territory in the past! It was very faint BUT what I did notice that definitely peaked my curiosity was that it darkened a lot more quickly than my previous pregnancies! I did POAS every day for a week as my last pregnancy resulted in an early loss and every day the progression was really apparent whereas usually you wouldn't see much progression only every 48+ hours as the hcg doubles. The main difference I noted in the first trimester (before we found out there were 2 on board at 15 weeks) was that food aversion was awful, as in gagging when I put food in my mouth from week 5 to around 11. And my breast size went from not even filling a B cup to a DD cup within about 5 weeks. They are currently an E and I'm up two sizes across the back!
Best of luck with your pregnancy and I hope you do get your DD. We are only a few weeks away from meeting our b/g twins :) Buying pink after 3 previous son's has been strange to say the very least lol!

Thanks for your reply and congrats on your twins!! B/G twins are adorable. I plan to do scan at 8 weeks just to check and then blood test at 10 weeks for gene testing and sex reveal! How soon did you find out genders? I'm so nervous already.....hoping the next few weeks fly past. I know atomic says the early test wasn't an indicator but this one came up so quick compared to past experience... That said, on the clomid I don't know when I ovulated as didn't use opk....so could be further than I think....the 8 weeks scan will reveal this I guess. I'm not feeling anything but tired so far, which may be due go the Christmas season more so than the pregnancy.
How old are your other boys? Did you for lots of sway tactics?

Thank you :) We are certainly excited now that the shock has worn off. My doctor knew I was taking Clomid and even she said changes of twins were very low for me due to other issues like my thyroid condition which had possibly been a factor in my mc last year!! Lol, what's meant for you surely won't pass you and I've definitely seen that to be true for me of late!
So exciting being able to get the NIPT and find out so early! We had an early scan around 6 ish weeks and they found one baby, one heartbeat. I decided to be team green at that stage so we didn't do NIPT lol. We found out about the second baby at 15 weeks and then genders at 18 weeks and I've had them confirmed again at 21, 24 & 26 weeks lol. Can't be too careful!!
My older boys are 6, 4 and 2 so it's hectic to say the very least. My DS3 is a sway opposite and after a total kitchen sink sway in summer 2017 where I had an early mc I decided early on to do very little for this sway. I was doing LE diet but at the upper ends of limits. It was more in the PCOS version I focused per Atomics advice. I lost a little weight just prior to ttc. No cardio as I just hadn't the time. Only supplements were folic acid and Clomid. We had aimed to got e4d but DH was ill and I was actually on anti biotic for a chest infection so it ended up being (by my estimate as I don't know exactly when I ovulated) either O-5 or O day itself. I had very scant CM and what I did have was creamy not EWCM which I'd usually have absolutely heaps of. The Clomid made it very difficult to determine when I ovulated. I'd always track CM but it was SO different that cycle!
Best of luck with your pregnancy and I hope the tiredness isn't too bad for you. Be sure to let us know what your little bundle ends up being. I'll keep everything crossed you get your little lady x

UPDATE - so I'm feeling good but the wait is dragging! I'm nearly 7 weeks now ( by my calc)
Will have dating scan this week and hoping to see just one in there....twins are lovely but I don't think I'd be excited! Had bloods taken at 6 weeks which were 8044 ....seems that's normal range so thinking twins unlikely as reading would be much higher?
No sickness yet, just tired. And no real signs yet - although people at work were commenting on my glowing skin and asking if i had new makeup. Lol. It kind if exciting that only hubby and I know. We are keeping secret til the harmony test results. Can test at 10 weeks so will know exactly when this will be once dating scan done. We live interstate from family so this part is relatively easy.
I am trying not to obsesses too much...during the swaying process there's so many choices make....but I guess now it is what it is and I just need to be patient. The Chinese chart said girl which made me smile but wary of messing about with the bicarb soda test or the intelligender as i feel they might mess me about emotionally. The harmony is 99% so best I wait for that!
Any tips for making this time go quicker???

Trust me - the reason I am so emphatic about that was because when I got pg with my 3rd, I had zero gender preference, it was only after several of the old wives tale type of things told me girl, girl girl that I suddenly decided I was having a girl. When I found out "she" was a he it was like someone had stolen my daughter and replaced her with a changeling - it realy cn mess with your head even when you don't have any gender desire at all. Stay away from them!

Atomic this is just like my third. Early on everyone kept saying it was a girl ( possibly just projecting their own wishes in me...) And then I was analysing every little thing and I too became convinced... Even had name picked out. When I found out it was a boy I felt robbed too and really really sad....and then when he was born and I saw his sweet face I felt guilty for that.

Anyway, so no old wives tales....I'm waiting for science to confirm!

Had dating scan yesterday and little heart beating away and confirmed week 7. Relieved to see just one after the clomid! At first I saw 2 dark areas and was panicking but sonographer explained one one spot was my ovary! Phew! BTW.....I adore twins but not at my age with 4 other kids!!

So just 3-4 weeks and I can get harmony test to confirm.

Hoping time flies....feeling good so far.

UPDATE- so I've had the harmony test done 4 days ago and results normally in 3-7 days. Nervously waiting. The exhaustion and nausea with this pregnancy has been quite overwhelming for last 3 weeks. I'm nearly 11 weeks now. Food has been a real battle. I've still gained 2kg though which is good as I was underweight when I got my bfp and was worried about it sticking. I have had some bleeding which has been upsetting....only on 3 occasions, very light pinkish/brown watery discharge. I know bleeding is considered normal but my experience is no bleeding at all for 3 healthy babies and bleeding for those I miscarried so I have been a bit worried. Especially now I'm so close to second trimester.
Anyway, I've tried not to obsess but have gone over and over my sway and tried to remind myself of all the positives. I exercised loads for 8 months, diet for 6 months, took clomid for 3 months, had alcohol and caffeine, Hubby took olive leaf, hubby cycled loads, my AF changed from morning to night in last 2 cycles, I was underweight, we did every 4 days, no orgasm.....that's off top of my head!
I'm so nervous to find out ...Im hoping results come today before I have to wait the weekend. I think my oldest son knows something is up. We have told noone but my best friend as frankly I couldn't bear the scrutiny of everyone's input/ opinions if we announced I before we knew if it was a girl it not.
Anyway.....will update once the results are in!
