View Full Version : Ramadan and the HE diet

Hi all,
I have been following the HE diet quite well since late last year, and have so far managed to gain a couple of kilos, which is usually quite difficult for me as I don't gain weight easily. However, since Ramadan has started, I have a few concerns I want to discuss:
How will fasting this month affect my swaying in the future? I live in the southern hemisphere so the fasts are quite short (only 12 hours), a little half of which is spent sleeping on my days off from work. So I would break my fast just after 5pm at sunset, and I eat a couple of dates, some fried foods such as spring rolls, samosas (can't resist them :( ), fruit salad, beef mince patties, and water or juice.
Then a short while later I would have dinner, which would be the usual protein with side of carbs (lamb, chicken, or vegetable curry, with meat broth rice or naan/flatbread), or takeaway on other days. I also snack on fruits, nuts, and try drinking lots of fluids such as water, coconut water, juices, v8, shakes, tea, and milk. Then I would sleep and wake up around 4:00am for Sehri, and on rotation eat an omelette with flatbread/toast, yogurt, chicken or lamb sandwich with lettuce, boiled egg plus cup of milk, peanut butter toast with pumpkin/sunflower seeds.
This will be my routine for the month, and while I am making sure to eat well after breaking my fast, will there be any issues in the future? Once Ramadan is over I will go back to my usual eating routine, how many weeks should I continue the HE diet, especially if say I plan on making my first attempt in late July or August?
Also, recently I downloaded a game on my phone called Call me Emperor, where you run your own empire and join rankings and verse others (sorry for my nerdiness!). I play it just for fun in my spare time but realised I feel so competitive when playing, and want to 'win' in the different tasks. I guess it's a little thing to help the sway lol
Btw happy Ramadan to fellow Muslim blue swayers :)

I can't say how much it affects your sway (it's probably different for everyone.) It's good you're in the S. Hemi, just do what you can to keep up with your eating during the time you're awake. I would have you back on the HE Diet for 6 weeks before trying.
Have you been trying all this time? Do you need help boosting chances of conception?

No we haven’t been trying, I’ve been off the pill since the beginning of the year, and we use condoms during my fertile week and unprotected on the other days so there is sperm exposure(husband doesn’t know about swaying yet, I’ll tell him in the future lol). Also my ewcm has come back, but I only get it for 1-2 days a month at ovulation, is that normal or should there be more?
6 weeks sounds good, I’ll be on my normal routine. I am also taking my ferritin iron tablet every day as well, and plan on taking vitamin D and probiotics soon. When Ramadan ends I’ll start a prenatal(Elevit)

So AF arrived today, it's the first time since Ramadan started almost 2 weeks ago. I always get my period very late at night or early hours in the morning, I wake up and it would be there. It's been that way since following the HE diet and even before as my eating patterns were already similar to the diet. But this time, the biggest change: My AF arrived in the late afternoon! This has happened since maybe last year during Ramadan, but I can't remember as I didn't keep track back then.
My change of AF timing may mean something or nothing at all, but it definitely shows that the HE and LE diet impacts our body, including ovulation and menstruation. Although my fasts are short (12 hours), and I am getting enough sleep, and eat regularly when breaking the fast, the timing of my AF still changed. I'm glad though that my cycles are still regular, but let's see what happens during my next AF, when Ramadan will also be over and I'll be back to my HE diet routine. Our bodies are crazy ya'll.

Yes that's very interesting, THANK YOU!
Please keep me posted, because this "time of period" subject has been a pretty strong trend. It doesn't predict gender, but it HAS happened to so many people on LE and HE Diets that I think there has to be something there!!

Although my fasts are not too long I am still waiting until July or August for my first attempt. Only so that my body adjusts back to its normal routine, which can take some weeks. I think you should wait until at least July as well, especially because your fasting hours are longer. Even though my fasts aren’t long I have already seen changes in my body, such as the change in AF arrival time, big difference for me.
For supps: I have taken iron ferritin tablets since January as I was low in iron, though now my course is finished. Atm I am taking vitamin d, and right after Ramadan ends I will start taking inner health plus probiotic tablet daily and elevit prenatals. Ask in your local pharmacy for halal or vegan/vegetarian prenatal, and post here the ingredients list to confirm it’s good for boy sway.

Hi. I am new to this website. I was actually wondering about sway and Ramadan. Just registered and happen to see this post.
I actually light swayed for baby2 ( I have 2 girls) . Just timing and ate more alkalised food reading Shettles Method on google.
However, we ended up dtd during the ramadan month. I later read that fasting sway girl. ( its long hours here - 19 hours).
I think i ate less because of ramadan timing and ended up swaying girl unknowingly . Stopped my morning lemon drink as I was fasting.
My period always come late as well during ramadan month. I checked ovulation and it was solid in the morning and we tried that night ( at that time I only knew about timing and eating alkalised food but didn’t follow any diet) means i still ate everything but added some alkalised food that’s all. So overall I believe it was favouring a girl and I concentrated too much on ovulation timing lol- I had a girl.
Planning to sway for a boy, not soon. I am trying to get to know the site, understand all these key words used here :D and gather more info and when I feel ready i will be getting the plan.
All the best for you both and hope we all get our boy .
Atomic, I have a question. I hope i can ask here. If I need to start a new subject please let me know.
DH cycles to work. He rides about 2 hours a day. Will this affect our sway for a boy?
He wasn’t when I had my 2 girls.

Welcome to the site! And wow what you have described is so interesting and confirms the fact that more girls are conceived during periods of fasting(there are articles on here discussing this). Take your time and read everything on this site in depth, especially the threads on HE diet and intercourse timing. Atomic is of great help and will answer your questions/concerns. It has taken me several months to understand all the info and apply it in my life, but I’m glad that I understand everything and will hopefully be confident when I start ttc.
InshAllah may we all get our little baby boy :)

Yes, I want you to add in another Vitamin D pill to take you from the 400 IU in your multivitamin up to 1000 (or around that.)
Where are you seeing me mention cutoffs? Cutoffs are for pink swayers, not blue. Sometimes blue swayers will say "cut off" as in "cutting my husband off from sex" but that is confusing and I only use it for pink, never for blue. So if you could explain where you're seeing that I can help put it in context
I want you to have an attempt the night of the first positive OPK, again the next morning if you can, and then again that night (so 2 in one day the second day). Then if possible, have another attempt the following day, and go to every other day after that for a couple turns.

Thank you so much [emoji4]. Feels great already for all this support here. I will be active here and reading. Prayers for you xx. Are you closer to ttc?
Dd1- lifestyle and diet , I was working, so I did skip my bf some days or very light bf. I don’t really like serials and oats so I never had it. I liked pickles and vinegary so I always had them in stock. I liked yoghurt and butter milk. No much snacks. I just have 3 times a day meal. Really lazy to drink water, have to remember and drink it. Not big fan of sweets and chocolates. I did eat chicken, fish, beef and veggies . No lamb. I wanted to loose or maintain weight, so always tried eating less and tried avoiding outside junks etc.
DD2- everything above plus- I tried eating oats and serial reading about it in a news article but I wasn’t very strict [emoji16]. I started eating more cheese. Loved jacket potatoes with cheese and beans or Tuna. Also added cheddar cheese in most of my toasts. It was a new thing I started between dd1 and dd2 ( not part of sway or diet, just suddenly loved cheese) I tried eating more of top alkalised food from the food list like broccoli, spinach, beef, watermelon, avocado etc. I don’t know if they are boy foods, this was me just googling and found a food chart, but I ended up conceiving in ramadan [emoji16] and my attempt with eating new food wasn’t that long.
I think overall for both girls- my lifestyle and food was ssoo girl friendly. I really feel my food habits and lifestyle did have role looking back at all these boy and girl diet infos. I wonder how you all did while conceived your girls? And what do you feel? Do you think you were also in the girl

Your diet definitely leaned more girl-friendly, especially with no snacking and maintaining/losing weight. There’s a thread on here titled “how we got our girls” and the stories are similar to yours. It’s amazing how diet and lifestyle influence our body, and all this info about swaying is something most people don’t know about or don’t believe in (which to an extent I understand as nothing can guarantee anything 100%). As for myself, this will be my first child inshAllah :) I guess my diet has always leaned towards HE (I’m a big snacker and love my dairy, meats, cereal), but after knowing about swaying I’ve become a lot more vigilant in how/what I eat, and most importantly the timing of eating.
Your diet actually sounds very similar to my mum, she only had breakfast and dinner, no snacking, low blood sugar, forgetting to eat, no chocolate but likes vinegary foods. She had us 3 girls and 1 boy :) She didn’t try losing weight as she was naturally thin, but never gained any either because she didn’t eat much (and still doesn’t). She doesn’t know about swaying but one day I’ll tell her and she’ll be most surprised lol
I pray we are all blessed with our gender dreaming, but whatever happens is God’s choice, and above all we are blessed with a bfp and an adorable healthy baby :)

You guys, please keep in mind that there are no "boy foods" or "girl foods" really. It's the overall nutrient composition of your diet as a whole. You can't get too hung up on eating magic foods, because if you eat all the magic foods in the world but are eating very low protein, low fat (with larger amounts of vegetable protein and fat) lower calories, skipping meals, etc you will still get a girl even eating so called "boy foods!"
Jazmin - honestly the stuff you were eating was not bad for a boy, but it was likely conceiving in Ramadan made you more pink friendly. I don't want you to give up those good foods you were eating, it isn't the foods, but the amount and the pattern you were eating them in!

Some people think women with a male twin are more likely to have boys!
I do not believe anyone is meant to have only boys or girls. It just doesn't make sense. Our genes do smart things and the smartest thing is to have boys or girls depending on the environment.
Yes it's fine to eat rice regularly, I often had rice with my boys.
If you have good EWCM you can skip Preseed. Natural EWCM is better than Preseed!

Yes so true. Forgot to mention the part about alkalising diets, I’ve read about it on other sites but don’t believe it myself tbh. It’s the overall fat, protein and nutrient content that counts (and how often we eat). But again someone could follow a certain diet and say that’s how they got their boy/girl but we can never know because there may be other factors, and it’s just impossible to test exactly why some have boys and others girls even after changing diet and lifestyles (espec when they have opposite after changing everything)

Ah that makes so much sense. Thanks so much atomic.
Few other things I remembered. As it was ramadan time, DH wasn’t in frequent release ( forbidden to bd during the fasting day time , so bd was rare during the month) I guess for boys it is more than once release , is that right?
I saw solid smile in the morning test, tried night around 10pm, then next mid day smile were gone and I felt feverish and cramp from left side ( was thinking ovulation) so that night we tried again- that’s it. But no bd for probably 5/6 days before that.
One other thing I should mention, both time, I quickly got up and went to toilet. I easily get urine infection so always get up for pee and wash. Also had to take a shower straight away ( as it was ramadan, have to shower after bd before fasting starts). While I was showering i felt like all releases were going out lol.. and it made me feel like its going to be a girl haha don’t know why i felt that.. i was thinking if these factors were favouring to a girl / boy at all?
Just thought to share this for others and wish to do better/ different next time.
Thanks xx

Oh yes absolutely - having hubby do regular release every 2-4 days is very important for blue.
And we have reason to believe that the more exposure you have to the hormones in his semen, the more blue friendly. Some people choose not to do this because it doesn't match Shettles timing, but if you take care not to have that sex during the fertile window you can have the best of both worlds - if you want Shettles timing (which does not work, but of course you're welcome to do it if you like) you just have the unprotected sex when you're not fertile.
Yes I'd try to stay laying down 15-30 min. after intercourse if you possibly can. Some believe a shower around the time you had sex makes "ions" that could possibly sway pink. I personally don't believe this but it can definitely wash away the semen and some sperm which would also sway pink.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

No it's fine I'm happy to answer as many questions as you have. I really want everyone to get their desired gender and it' very hard to find information about every small detail online.
I HATE Pregnacare. It is one of my least favorite vitamins on the market. (I also hate Wellman's so please do not give that to your husband) The Pregnacare products have massive megadoses of nutrients in it, some of which can delay or even stop ovulation, and most of them also have other herbal ingredients which may sway pink and also delay or even stop ovulation.

So regular unprotected sex is blue friendly and it doesn’t really matter if it was around ovulation or on ovulation time? This Shettles timing is stuck in brain as it was the first thing I read and comes up everywhere on google! I do feel regular release is the way to go but ovulation timing is still stuck there in my head.
Omg- that’s so good to know! About the waiting and shower. I will
Make a note of this .. thanks you xx

That's what we believe based on theory and a study that showed lots of unprotected sex boosted fertility greatly. We dont' have the resources to test it yet.
Dr. Shettles died I think in 2000 and he was like 100 years old when he did. He hadn't done science for decades before. His theory when tested with modern technology has been totally debunked - timing hasn't changed gender ratios, and X and Y sperm are about the same size, swim the same speed, and live equally as long. But all that having been said if you really just can't give it up, it's ok, do the regular release with the 3 attempts at positive OPK (that's why I came up with that method, to help blue swayers who really still wanted Shettles.) :)

AF started again today, and it came at exactly 8:30 in the morning! This cycle I was a couple of days late and thought it might be a bfp, even though I was careful with the unprotected timing but almost bought a pregnancy test, glad AF is here now though! It’s been 2 weeks since my last fast, and I’m back on the HE diet big time. During fasting my period started in the afternoon (first time ever in over a year), this time it was morning but not super early morning like it normally was before ramadan. Will keep updated on my next cycle!

I started my period 8 days early. In Ramadan it was 4 days late. My cycle isn’t stable yet after delivery , thinking bfeeding also plays a role. I haven’t spotted ovulation yet. Not sure if I am missing the day or am not ovulating yet.

If you're getting your period you are almost certainly ovulating, but it might be helpful if we knew when in the cycle it was.
The HE Diet should really help normalize your cycle!
