View Full Version : The flattest nub ever?

I was on mu u/s scan 2 day in a row because first time tech couldn't see nasal bone ( could be an indicator of Down syndrome) so I freaked out. Yesterday he saw it ( on one pic you can see it) but I'm not relieved completely :worry:
My ob/gyn is all about amniocentesis and she is pushing me to go for it due to my age but I really don't want to. Plus they charged an arm and a leg for :(
Yesterday I've had my blood work done for double test ( Hcg and PAPPA) and we'll see results....
Anyway, (stupid) u/s15491550 tech asked me do I have any kids, so I said ,yeah, 2 girls, and he went on how I must be hoping for a boy now, right? I said NO, of course ( big fat liar :p) and THEN he said, in a very happy tone: Oh, but it looks like you're having another girll!" I wanted to tell him he better concentrate on nasal bone instead of annoying me, but I said: Oh, OK!"
So is this the flattest nub in the history of nubs? Or is there any nub on those pics at all? Scull specialists? ( Is that really a nasal bone on second pic? Sorry, but I'm freaking out!)

Sweetie, don't let them push you into ANYTHING! It's your body and your baby! I've heard those amnio tests can come out positive and absolutely nothing is wrong, and it sends the parents into a world of worry. :( That US tech sounds like a JERK too! Ugh! I wanna smack him!

Hi Zivic, gosh i am so sorry you had this concern. I don't know anything about the nasal bone, but i do think that is a very flat nub. Was the tech refering to the nub being flat too?

Sorry you´re worried ZB. The tech saw the nasal bone the second day right? so you don´t have to worry about that now.
How far along are you, maybe it was early and the nub will still rise (if it is flat now, I don´t know).
If the double test comes back with high risk (I sure hope it won´t) do you then still have to pay for the amnio ?
If you´re really worried I would do the amnio, could take away all your worries. I completely changed my mind about this, with my first two I didn´t do any tests and would have been happy to have a Down´s baby, but this time I worried a lot about it too so I know how you feel.

Hiya ZB:) I would stick to your gut feeling and not have the amnio if it worries you as it looks like the nose bone is showing by the crosses in pic 1:agree: And they would have made a big deal if they still hadn't seen it. Plus without your figures from your bloods they shouldn't panic you about that. And your actual nuchal fold at the bottom of babies neck looks perfectly small and thats what the scan is about really!!
As for a nub, I am completely not seeing any nub at all on either of your pics. Do you have any other pics or any video to post??? Your pics look slightly elongated aswell so are making the head shot (which I would lean boy on atm) slightly inaccurate aswell.
Have they booked you any more scans????

I actually think something is wrong with their ultrasound machine that is making both the skull and the nub look overly flat. I think everything just looks overly stretched out. Plus, at barely 12 weeks I really am not convinced that they can tell much reliably. My doc's office won't even guess at 14 weeks!!!
 for a healthy baby above all else!!!

The skull shape looks boyish but I think it's the way the picture is. Can't see a clear nub. Hard to pick up a boy or girl feeling but your baby is upset about either the talk of Down's or being called a girl, not sure. Your baby is just not happy!

Zivic-I would say wait for the blood test first! Your pics is stretched out like crazy so I don't think we can guess from it. But the baby has the nose bone .(are this ppl blind there or what?) Hope you get more u/s so we can see more pics!

Hi Indira sweeti! Yes, he said he saw the nasal bone second time, hope he REALLY saw it. I'm 12 weeks 1 day, it should be the best time for nub shots, but I hope he was wrong :worry:
I also didn't do any tests with my girls, but now I'm super worried. Thank you!

The pic looks odd. What about the neck measurement. Was that okay? It's another marker for Downs.
I agree to wait and see what the blood test puts your risk at and go from there. I would have done an amnio if mine had come back high risk.

You don't need to answer this but something for you to think about... If you did an amnio and the results came back Down's would you abort, place baby for adoption, or love it? If the nose thing is all they saw and the heart is fine then why should they worry you so much.
For me at 25 with DS1 the blood work came back as possible Down's but I turned down the amnio because in the end I was keeping my baby. The same thing happened with 2 out of 3 of my bro's kids and they chose to keep the babies and they are normal healthy kids. I've had several cousins who had bad scans and blood test and the babies were fine.

Hey preggo! Long time no see!:bighug: I couldn't visit GD as often bcos it made me sick, right now I'm struggling not to vomit all over key board lol!
You are completely right about nuchal fold, it is perfect 1.6mm  I see I'm talking to an super experienced mama, you are right about nasal bone, it's on the first pic marked with 2 xx.
These are the 'best' nub pics, I'll try to find better scull pics. Thank you zillion times for 'lean boy' guess!!!!! :HH: Sounds so great!

Thank you huni! I hope HE is upse about both being called girl and Down talk lol! Seriously: I'm upset so baby is probably picking my nervousness.
About keeping the baby: I'm so ashamed to say I probably wouldn't keep it if it wasn't healthy :hide:
I know those results often come false, thank you for sharing your experience!

You can always ask for another one based on the fact that the tech has you concerned about things that maybe he shoudn't have brought up. I don't think a tech should have said girl when gender can not be confirmed until after a certain time. And here they are not allowed to bring up a concern of Downs' to you and can only tell your Dr. that they need to do future scans for several weeks.
Tell your Dr that the tech was very unprofessional and upset you a lot and you want to confirm a healthy baby!

I'm sorry he put you in a panic :( I think the blood test would put your mind at ease. I would definitely do the amnio if you are questioning any of the tests. I had one with DS1 because of pre-term labor, I was freaked out but it really wasn't that bad.
I also feel the same as you in regards to keeping the baby as shameful as it is to say :HH:

The results just give you odds. Only an amnio can confirm. I would not carry a baby with serious defects to teen either. Downs babies often have severe heart defects that require multiple surgeries.
It's a decision you make for the siblings too. Us parents do not live forever and at some point the existing kids will have to take over. It's a big decision.

ZB, I don't know anything about nubs, but I hope everything is okay with your baby! I am worried about that same stuff--I am also 39, and I have been worried about what my scan will show... :worry:
I agree, if you are worried, ask for another scan!! ANd if you are not comfortable with an amnio, that is your decision. Can you get a CVS where you are? That is what I am looking into right now.

Sorry about the nasal bone comment! They shouldn't have even told you that. They should have just said they couldn't get the pics they needed and asked you to come back for more. Silliness!
What gestation were you at this ultrasound? That nub looks very flat, almost angled down. Congrats!

hmm, I thought the angled down thing at the end of the second pic was the nub. But everyone else says they don't see one... so I'm probably wrong. Still hope for your boy then!

Glad your baby is healthy!!

This is our last too...I have finally gotten a hold of the ultrasound pics on disc (no potty shots from my 19 week scan but have found a few nub shots from almost 12 week scan - mine look pretty flat to me as well so everything leaning towards another girl).
I did Google an interesting study done that indicated that majority of nub guesses by techs that turn out to be wrong are girl guesses (ending up as boys), hugely more common than boys to girls, so there is hope for us yet!!! I hope you have better luck finding out at your 20 week scan than we did...I left with more questions than answers.

I wouldn't worry about the nasal bone because ultrasounds are not 100% reliable, it all depends on the babys position that day, unless they do several and persistently pick up an anomaly there should be nothing to worry about, in my friends pregnancy one minute they thought the baby had a club foot, then they said it was fine and then ohhh maybe, turned out the baby was born perfectly healthy with perfect feet!
