View Full Version : Both boy and girl moms -- what was your BMI (or ht+wt)?

I'd like to put together a listing of where we all were with our body mass index (BMI) when we conceived the children we already have. Presumably we'd see a trend of the underweight and overweight BMIs matching up to more pink and the moderate ones matching to blue ... I think seeing those numbers might be encouraging to those of us who are changing our lifestyles during our sways and losing or gaining weight.
If you don't know what your BMI was but can include your height and your conception weights for each kiddo, I'll do the math.
List updated through 9:35 a.m. CST, Sept. 24. Items marked with * indicates the individual regarded themselves as being muscular, athletic or toned at the time of that conception.

This pregnancy - boy 29.6 - short and stumpy:bigsmile: But I was more toned even at this heavier weight, so if you can add a brief two word description to your list about body condition then that might be a great help, say, skinny, lean muscle, overweight flabby (can't think of a better word lol), heavy muscular and so on. My last pregnancy was heavy muscular, but the girl before was overweight flabby:oops:

That is precisely my height, coocoo ... so we literally see eye on eye on the importance of that half inch!! :) Most BMI calculators don't allow for anything but whole inches, so anytime I am determining my BMI, I plug it in for both 5'2" and 5'3" and then average the two. So I'll be certain to do the same for you! :)

ELP, do you happen to remember what your BMI would have been for your previous pregnancies? I'd love to include numbers for both the boy and girl lists. And sure, if people would like to note if they considered themselves to be muscular at the times of conception, that would be great. The BMI gives us a general picture of skinny/normal/overweight, but not of tone.

Not sure about my BMI, but it was defintiely the highest at the conception of my dd as I had gained tons of weight carrying ds2 which I still hadnt lost. I was also the at the unfittest stage of my life, pregnancy was hell as I was so not toned and still flabby from the last pregnancy. This time I was a tiny bit heavier than when conceiving my dd (I now had left over weight from BOTH pregnancies, sigh) but I had used the year inbetween to do lots of toning and am much fitter this time. (I did NOT exercise int he weeks leading up to conception though for swaying reasons, I lost weight while ttcing, 4 kg).

I'm 4'11", and naturally slim
with DS I was 20.4 at conception (101 lbs) this was a very stable weight for me - I was always between 99-102lbs for months and months without doing anything different
this time I was at 18.4 at conception (91 lbs) but not sure what we're having yet

I'll start by saying that I don't remember my exact weight at conception with the boys but I think this is roughly correct:
DS1 - 27.11
DS2 - 29.37
DS3 - 25.18
DD1 - 23.89

Nini, do you have a decent idea of what your conception weights would have been for each of your pregnancies? If you could tell me that and your height, I can plug it into a BMI calculator to get each of the numbers and include you in the lists.

I was about 25 BMI for all my boys.
I have always had a muscular frame, but I wasn't working out... so muscles with a layer of flab, I guess LOL.
With DS#1 and #2 I had been gaining weight/eating fatty foods. I gained A LOT of weight when PG with DS#2, so I had just lost 20 lbs. when I conceived DS#3... but the weight loss still only put me back at my previous BMI of 25 :)
I am determined to get my current BMI as far below 25 as I can... but I know I will never make it to 19-20 which is where I wish it was for TTC pink. :(

My BMI was around 19-20 with DS. I was quite slim and in a great shape since we just got married and I wanted to fit into my dream wedding gown. I got pregnant in our honeymoon eating very well and enjoying life. =)
Now I ttc a girl and even though I'm not overweight, my BMI is much bigger - around 22-23 now. I feel like I can never go below what I was with my DS so I hope it's the losing weight-trend that counts and not the weight itself LOL.

Roughly, yes, but I never weighed myself properly before conceiving ds2 because I was happy with my shape. I am fairly heavy even when I wore a size 8-10 (UK size).
So when conceiving my ds1, I was young, only 22, I must have weighed like 60kg propably less, like 57kg. With my ds1 I was probably 66kg at conception, but eating loads and all the time (I must have gained weight while ttcing because I tried everything to enhance fertility and ate really well - iddnt know about swaying then ;), with my dd then I must have been like 72 kg (I lost ca. 3 kg durign my sway!). This time I was like 75kg (I was something like 4 kg heavier when I started my sway).
I am 1.66m or 166cm. Sorry, I only do metric, but the converter probably wont mind ha ha....
the main difference was that eventhough my BMI was lower when conceiving my boys, I was eating like a maniac (like I usually do), conceiving my dd I was trying to follow the IG girl diet (although I wasnt properly, but I was loosing weight). This time I lost weight conciously, skipped breakfast etc.
I gained a lot of weight carrying ds2, and so in the 7 months before conceiving my dd, I lost 12 kg in total!!!

I am 5 foot 7....
DS1: I weighed 150 lbs, and was working out moderately and lifting weights. I was not really in shape yet, but had a nice body and looked super nice and fit though I wasn't there yet
DS2: I weighed 170 lbs and had just begun to excerise moderately again to shed DS1's baby weight (there is 3 years between their conceptions) and I was snacking a lot, eating a lot of protein etc
Current pregnancy: I weighed 205 lbs, (I know my BMI is considered "obese"), lots of flab, thick flabby thighs, jiggly arms, baby gut, etc) I did NOT work out, had a sit down job, (with my boys I worked retail and was on my feet moving around 8 hrs + a day). I knew there was no way I could excerise crazily, so I purposely tried to move as little as possible, hoping my heavy weight woudl be an advantage to swaying pink, and lack of muscle tone. Was on a mix of IG / LE diet, and lost about 5 lbs. Will found out gender in 3 weeks, and will update the thread for you scientific research :)

Hi ladies! I have updated the listing on page 1 as Auroara and Nini have both gotten their gender results. If you haven't contributed your BMIs (and gender of kids) yet, I'd love to add you to the listing.
What's been interesting to observe so far is that boy moms seem to be spread across the whole spectrum -- BMIs from 17s through upper 20s. Whereas the girl moms (just in this sample size, of course) seem concentrated on the low and high ends (currently, there's only one girl mom with a 23ish BMI and then none until 26ish). So it does seem to support the idea of underweight and overweight leaning pink (although both types are certainly represented on the boy listing, so it's no guarantee).
It would be great to get more data from everyone to keep getting a clear picture.

Dramabird, thanks for updating Nini and I!!
That is the one thing I keep taking away from this website and my research in general that extremes seem to sway well with girl, and moderation better for a boy, of course this is a gross generalization, but it seems that it may be leaning in that direction.

Hi Ladies,
I am new to this forum, but this brings me to something I have always wondered about. I am super muscular, have always worked out, and eaten low calorie. i thought i would have girls, but i have two boys.
My sway now revolves around trying to lose my muscle and get flabby:)
Atomic, maybe you could chime in here...is it more muscle=more testosterone?
i have 0 body fat. not sure of my bmi but super low.

Yes, more muscle = more testosterone. Also, being in excellent health also often means your fertility is very high and high fertility = more boys regardless of anything else you're doing.

Hi HappyMedium,
Could you let me know your height? I know that you've included BMI numbers here, but I'm thinking they might not be right. You said that you're currently at a BMI of 15 -- that's really, really, REALLY underweight. At 134 lbs., to have a BMI of 15, you'd need to be more than six and a half feet tall. :) If so ... how's the weather up there? ;)
If you tell me your height, I'd be happy to tally up the numbers for you.

Here's my info:
DS1: 24.7 BMI
DS2: 22.9 BMI
ETA: Current BMI is 24.5 and we're swaying pink right now (September). I've lost a lot of weight this year, but it still makes me nervous and worried about not having a lower BMI than my previous conceptions. :(

Hi ladies,
I have given this list a long-overdue updating. My apologies for how long it took. Between my bfp and my gender scan, I tried to stay off the Internet as much as possible (both Gender Dreaming and Facebook), so as not to obsess, and instead spend that time with both prayer and distraction! :)

My height is 6ft. I have a thin build but the whole weight loss/gain, diet etc really does prove right for me
I weighed 10st 6 or 7 (149lbs) BMI 20.3 when we conceived DS - not heavy but my heaviest. We were eating badly, not much fruit veg etc at the time. Loads of big stress in my life then too.
I weighed 10st 0 or less (140) BM1 19.1 when we conceived DD. We were eating very well. much less stress, and DH was running 30+ miles per week.
Not much of a weight difference I suppose but at my height I cant go much below.
I can lose 2-3 pounds in a few days if I so much as have a cold and am a little off food. I have a very active job and family life plus high metabolism I think..
Anyway just to say for me anyway the theories proved right :-)

With my DS1 I was only 15 and my BMI 19.2, I was not athletic but I suppose I was energetic since I was only a teen :(
With DS2 I was 20 but it was my first time going out and I had been going dancing before conception. My BMI was 19.8
Now my BMI is 22.11, but I'm not as healthy or active. I weeze very easy from working out or doing anything active. But I'm still in a healthy weight.
I want a girl this time! (first planned pregnancy!)

I love this thread! It's so interesting.
DS1 - BMI 20 - had been on a two month honeymoon and ate my way through the whole vacation. Had lost lots of weight for the wedding and had gained a bit over the honeymoon.
DS2n- BMI 22.5 - had been running alot, so quite muscular and fit

Since it can only help to have more data, here is some off the top of my head:
my older half sister has 2 girls, both conceived in late 30s, her BMI is 18.5 (she's very fit & muscular, a personal trainer)
one of my best friends has 3 boys, conceived in later twenties/early 30s, her BMI is 17 (vegetarian runner, Martha type, very competitive professionally)
Personally I doubt BMI has much to do with it, as individual health probably matters most and that isn't based on very specific BMIs.

I am 5 ft. Have had 5 kids.
1) Girl- weight was 95 pounds (yes I was underweight at this time).
2) Boy- weight was 110 pounds
3) Boy- weight was 115 pounds
4) Boy- weight was 120 pounds
5) Girl- weight was 120 pounds. (BUT this is a healthy weight, I was even fitting into cloths from before I was pregnant with baby 1!! We were working out and I had visible abs...lol) (should mention that, this pregnancy was the first since number 1 that we had truly been working out regularly).

i agree BMI probably doesn't indicate much on an individual level, but if Trivers Willard does work for swaying we should see a trend across the entire population where lower BMI = more girls conceived even if it's only by a couple of percentage points. :) This isn't a matter of "what magic BMI will sway", it's a matter of what this data indicates overall for swaying.

Not sure what my BMI was with the boys but I was about 5-7 lbs heavier. So maybe I was 18.5+. The past 3 months I have lost some weight, I am now underweight and my BMI is low too about 17.4
