"Duggar It Out": A Case Study

Rate this Entry
So Ive heard some say they can or will just "Duggar it out" until they get their DG. I personally like the Duggars, although I don't agree with all their choices I am thankful that they provide some wholesome television and that they have the courage to live out what they personally believe. But I am not here to talk about whether or not their family values are right or wrong, rather I want to use their family as a case study for gender selection. ***Keep in mind this is all purely my speculation just for FUN***

So they have 19 kids, 20 if you count the recent miscarriage, and oddly enough it's an even split: 10 girls and 10 boys. So in theory, if you have enough children, you will get an even number eventually! However, I doubt there are any of us who want 20 children. So let's look at the order of the kids:

1. Boy (this could be luck of the draw, who nows why #1 was a boy)
2/3. Boy/Girl Twins (this is statistically the most likely twin combination so once again, no real surprise here.)
4. Girl
5. Girl
6. Girl (Three girls in a row!! And each pregnancy is less than 18 months apart, in one case I think just 13 months apart. So she was probably breast-feeding when all these girls were conceived. She was also probably not getting much sleep and not eating too well as she's got so many kids so close together. And I'd be willing to bet they weren't having many attempts as they were so tired from so many kids to watch and mouths to feed. So it's really no small wonder she's got all these girls)
7. Boy
8. Boy (Next comes 2 boys. Maybe the kids are getting old enough they're helping out. Maybe this was a season of her life she became more Martha about things to had more attempts)
9. Girl (this could just be random luck)

Now here is where it gets interesting: 6 boys in a row!
10./11. Boy/ Boy Twins (statistically less likely than girl/boy twins)
12. Boy
13. Boy
14. Boy
15. Boy (what happened here? Well these boys are farther apart for some reason. closer to 18 months and I think there is 2 years at one point. The girls are older and probably helping out quite a bit, so there is less parenting responsibility so she may be eating much healthier, exercising a bit, maybe having more attempts. She also steadily gained weight during this time. THis is also when they started filming their shows, so maybe this added some martha stress to her life)

Now this is just as interesting to me, 5 girls in a row!
16. Girl
17. Girl
18. Girl
19. Girl
20. Girl (These girls are very close together, two of them are just 11 months apart! I would think that she's getting used to so many kids and is getting her signature "Mary" personality as she is quite a laid back lady today. She is also much older, late 30's and 40's. She is probably very busy with all the older ones getting engaged and married and grandkids so maybe less attempts. She also talks about how she started weight watchers to lose the weight and learned the importance of portion control, aka reduced calories, fat and protein, aka LE diet. And how she began walking 4 miles every day, which takes about 60 minutes, and is exactly the intense cardio we talk about here.)

So there you go. While some of the kids genders are probably just luck of the draw, I see strong indications she was unwillingly swaying for at least the last 5 girls and likely for the 6 boys before that. Hope you enjoyed!

love it! I always think, she has several runs of kids that are longer than most of us even HAVE kids - people tend to think "oh gosh I"m set for boys or girls" after 2 of the same gender - um NO!

    Good read:)

Another interesting thing is 7 out of 9 girls were born October-January. The boys are more spread out through the "seasons".

It's always interesting to see how balanced their family ended up being even with long stretches of just one sex.

My grandmother had BBGGBGBB--almost balanced and she started out with two boys, just like me. The shift toward smaller families is absolutely responsible for the pressure to get both sexes right away, in my opinion. It can be hard to figure out your own values: do I want the small family I envisioned or do I want a bigger family so I can try harder to get this experience I think will be meaningful? I often feel like my own values are in conflict with one another.

I do think we can get "set" for a particular gender because we get set in our ways: a certain pattern of eating or exercise or even sex. A habit of stress and anxiety and worry, a drinking or smoking habit can set us up for a particular gender over and over again. But what this site has shown is that we can "reset" ourselves to favor conception of the other gender by changing our patterns and habits of diet and exercise, sex and even personality/way we respond to stress.

It certainly is encouraging to see such strong trends in people who have not swayed but end up getting the gender based on the theory's of swaying on this forem. That, added to the scientific studies done that are not to do with swaying but back it up make me feel it is very possible for me to get a girl next even if I end up not being able to do PGD.
I have a friend from a large family of girls and her husband is from a large family of boys and they are due with their first any day now. I can't wait to see what they get! I am trying to guess based on their life styles and I am leaning girl at this stage

Wouldn't it have been cool since she was planning on having tons of kids if you could try and test your theory's with her atomic? Like if she let you be her experiment?
Her daughter just got married and I'm pretty sure she is taking as much as she was given...maybe you could contact her;)

Haha coocoo I'd LOVE to do that because I'd like to arrange a marriage for one of my sons LOL - her daughters are so cute!

Interesting observation. I was pondering this through my head how she ended up with both gender even after a streak of the same in a row without swaying. Maybe she was unknowing swaying as you pointed out. There were a few in there that may have been luck of the draw but for the most part it seemed there was unknown swaying going on. Interesting...Good job for pointing that out!

YES, ATOMIC!! Please contact her daughter who just got married and is expecting her first! She said "she is going to have as many as God allows her." in this article I was just reading a few days ago. I would love to see you experiment with her. Who knows if if she would go for it though or if it would be playing God?

Even if she wasn't swaying, I feel that the observation factor is actually MORE important. I would LOVE to do a study of these super large families because all it would take is just a demonstration that it is statistically unlikely to have a long run of boys and a long run of girls - and then if that same phenomenon occurs in family after family, it would disprove the "gender is a coin flip" paradigm once and for all.

I know I mentioned this before but my great-grandma had 6 g and then 2 b at the end, and I know a lady from InGender who had a boy, then 8 girls, then 2 boys. And not to mention these people The Arndt Family
