Hi @atomic, I'm sorry I'm new here. I sort of double posted and saw a reply on the other thread so tried to delete this post, but can't figure it out. These pics were from my 10.5 week appointment in which my OB said she was confident this was a boy. It took me by surprise because I too thought it was way too early to tell. I have three boys and was hoping for a girl and feel like my dream was just swept out from under me so early. I wish she had said nothing at all now. I just don't understand. I know potty shots aren't reliable at this age, but she's very smart and experienced. I just don't see her speaking up about it if she wasn't certain. I'm confused.

It can be a boy, but the fact is that about 90% of all our incorrect ultrasound guesses come from OB's. I think they're great at what they do but what they do is NOT read ultrasounds. I'm sure she's great at taking care of pregnant women and delivering babies but it is not true that you can tell a baby's gender via ultrasound at 10 weeks' gestation.

The reason is that the Y chromosome is dormant until the 10th week. Boys and girls are identical up to that point (both look like girls but the genitals are really prominent because babies are super tiny still) because it's only once the Y wakes up and starts making testosterone, do "girly bits" turn into "boyly bits" LOL and this process has barely even begun in the 10th week. Even with a perfect nub, you cannot tell gender at 10 weeks 5 days. I do not find ultrasounds reliable till into the 13th week. And potty shots aren't reliable till even later because the genitals are so prominent in both boys and girls that the girl parts can look like boy stuff from underneath.

So, can your baby be a boy, yes, but can anyone tell that at this point from that shot - no.
