Pregnancy iodine pills 'good for babies and economy' - Thoughts?
This is a UK article claiming two thirds of UK mothers are deficient in iodine.
Are we seriously the only country who doesn't have iodine in our salt as standard?? Why is this? Is it a cost thing? Would adding iodine to our salt like the rest of the world cancel the need for these pills and work out cheaper in the long run? Thoughts?

The U.S. doesn't use iodized salt as a standard either. Most restaurants and prepared foods don't use it and you have to make sure you look for it when buying salt on your own. Supposedly iodized salt is more expensive. I'd be surprised to hear the numbers are any lower here either.

Traditionally British diets were high in iodine naturally due to higher seafood and dairy intake but as the diet switches to more processed foods then people may not be getting enough. Governments take time to realize things like this. I think it's so stressed in the US and Aus. because both nations have inland populations where lack of iodine has historicaly been a bigger problem.
