In nature, pregnant women did not have access to the donut place and so this mechanism evolved that makes us crave calories, in particular carbs, in pregnancy. Our bodies don't know we have as much food as we could ever want as soon as we get hungry...and our bodies don't know that we know we're pg, either (in nature, most women and certainly none of our primate ancestors, wouldn't have known or even guessed they were pg at this stage so couldn't have deliberately eaten extra food without this hunger signal). Pregnancies where the woman developed a large appetite and started eating extra food very early in pregnancy, and stored extra body fat and nutrients right away, had a better chance of making it to term than a pregnancy in a woman who did not have this increase in appetite right away, and as a result those genes were more likely to survive to be handed down to future generations.
Basically, you're hungry now because it paid all your ancestors large genetic dividends to be hungry very early in pg and their genes live on in you.

I always promise myself I'll be very heatlhy eater during preg, but I always succumb to the call of donuts or some kind of other fried delight here and there....I think enjoying treats here and there is a great thing during preg., just of course incorporate some good stuff too!
Me too auroara and now that it's happened 5 times over, I am convinced my body is seriously trying to tell me something that maybe I need to listen to. I am all carbs, all the time when I'm pregnant!!!
OMG...so am I!!! I crave mostly only pasta and carbs this preg, and actually vommited eating meat early on (and I ususally love meat...) this is seriously the most carb nuts I have been, as long as I eat some vegs/fruits everyday, I've kind of...given up and let myself have that carb feast my body obviously really, really wants to have!
oh, I have eaten horribly, I was just telling myself tomorrow I will eat better as I sit here and eat chocolate ice cream and combos and then I read this post! Eating helps with the nausea so it's hard to stop.
That is exactly what happened to me when I found out I was prego last month. I couldn't believe it.. I keep saying to DH "Starving again!" LOL He made a snide remark "Well, you wanted this!"
I remember eating two peanut butter Snickers Easter bunnies the week I found out I was prego. I craved chocolate BAD!
It's totally normal. :)
That little bean is growing ferociously fast!!!
Amari, I've read a couple things that indicate multiple pg have better outcomes (stay in womb longer and higher weight at birth)when you gain more early in pregnancy, so eat up!!
I don't know if you ever go onto IG, but Charliecats did that with her twins and it really worked well for her.
Auroara, I made myself eat meat the other day and had an absolutely HORRID stomachache afterwards that lasted for like 6 hours. It was really miserable.
The other interesting thing is that normally in pg my lactose intolerance totally goes away and I can drink milk by the gallon (normally I can only do yogurt and cheese) but with this pg I still have to be really careful about how much milk I drink because I am getting sick.
