Insurance question!

Hi ladies! Open enrollment is coming up soon and I am looking at my options and need some advice. I will be having a baby in April so that is really my big concern. I don't want to be hit with a lot of bills and then struggle for the rest of the year with medical expenses.

If we stay in our current plan:
$60 a month for insurance + $200 a month for contribution to health savings plan = $260 a month. Will have a $1,250 deductible, office visit will be 70% coverage no deductible (pretty much $26-30 every visits to pediatrician), hospital will be 70% coverage after deductible, $5,500 out of pocket limit. I will be able to get back $2,000 from my HSA so that will pretty much cover the delivery (dr. office estimated $1,500). Might also be able to use for other hospital fees. Then, for the rest of the year have to pay out of pocket for anything else that comes up.

I wanted to also add that getting reimbursed from the HSA is a PITA. We have to wait until we get the insurance statement and save receipts, then we have to fill out forms, fax it off, then wait another 2 weeks for check to come in the mail. Sometimes it can take a month or more to get $ back.

Or we could upgrade to premier plan:
$265 a month to get $500 deductible, $2,500 out of pocket limit, $25 office visits, hospital 85% coverage after deductible. Would not contribute to HSA so would have to rely on insurance coverage and then pay the rest out of pocket.

What would you do????

Plan B. the HSA is just paying it in advance. It's a $5 difference with lower total out of pocket totals.

Sorry I don't know anything about this cause I'm from Canada but I can't believe how much it costs to have a baby!!!!! That's crazy!

I agree with nbp. We do the same thing pretty much.

Thanks ladies! It does seem smarter to have better coverage and lower out of pocket in the event (god forbid) something does go wrong at the hospital. And, we will be better off the rest of the year too. I will be so glad not to have to worry about the HSA too! I have about $50 in receipts I have been saving and dreading to deal with. Not to mention, I put too much $ in the HSA this year and am trying to find ways to spend the money...use it or loose it!

That really is a crazy price! You should look into having a holiday in the UK for the next 7 months - probably be cheaper and the medical care would be free! ;)

Really makes me appreciate not having to pay for medical care, I hope you find a good solution that covers everything without breaking the bank. xx
