There are a few posts on here where we've discussed this study. The study doesn't address age as it is dealing with all age groups who have undergone ART.
It had long been thought IVF increased birth defect rates but it isn't known if that's because those seeking ART usually do so for fertility purposes which also puts them in a higher birth defect bracket. ICSI increases the odds even more. However, keep in mind that this "increase" is still so small it isn't considered significant. Think about all of the couples you know who have done IVF. Do any of those children have birth defects? I know many people who conceived with IVF and their children are all perfectly healthy. It's all perspective. GL!!

In looking even more closely at the numbers, Davies says there also seemed to be a difference in the risk of birth defects depending on whether doctors were working with fresh, as opposed to previously frozen, embryos.
Babies conceived from embryos that were frozen after ICSI have a risk of birth defects that's nearly the same as that of babies born to fertile couples. Whereas babies that started as fresh embryos had a risk of birth defects that was about 75% higher than those born to fertile couples.
"The freeze-thaw cycle improves risk," Davies says. "The birth weights and gestations also improve after freezing."
That may be because embryos that survive freezing are simply healthier to begin with and more likely to develop normally, he says.
"I think it's probably an [indicator] of embryo quality," Davies tells WebMD. "There's quite a loss of embryos during the freeze-thaw cycle. What's interesting is that it may be the ones that are not developmentally competent anyway."
Other treatments associated with higher risks of birth defects included gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT), which involves mixing an egg and sperm in a test tube and then immediately placing the mixture into a fallopian tube. GIFT was tied to a 73% increased risk of birth defects, but experts say it is less of a concern because it's rarely used anymore.

The study itself say that there is a 50% higher rate of defects in IVF versus natural conceptions in fertile people. This is an abstract that has not been peer reviewed. If it is anything like the previously discussed May study, it will turn out to be seriously flawed.Quote:

We know for a fact that IVF does not cause a 50% increase in birth defects simply because that is not what we observe in real life. Also, they did not find a difference in birth defects between infertile patients that used IVF and those that did not use IVF. An effect this large would have been obvious in the CDC data base long, long ago.
I would also like to other the following factual statement that will ease the mind: You have a higher probability of having a healthy child using IVF/ICSI/PGD 24 than getting pregnant spontaneously.
