Excess Amniotic Fluid--Anyone have this?

So I had a 39 week ultrasound this morning and not only is the baby measuring BIG (9.5 lbs, only slightly larger than my last baby so I wasn't really surprised) but I also have excess amniotic fluid. Like, the ultrasound dr and tech kept telling me that if my water breaks at home I should prepare for a tidal wave (sorry tmi). When DH asked what that indicates, the dr said "well it could indicate a problem with the baby but everything on your ultrasound is measuring fine so there's no reason to worry." Of course, that made me WORRY. Then, when we got home my doctor called me and said that after seeing the report and talking to the ultrasound dr he decided I should be induced tomorrow morning. He also said that if my water breaks at home I should get to the hospital ASAP (risk of placental abruption) and when I asked if the baby was OK he said "it appears everything is fine but of course you never know until they come out."

I've been getting more panicky all day. First, the thought of something happening to me (google led me to worse case scenarios like maternal hemorrhage) and then the thought of something happening to my baby. DH is much more level headed and of the mindframe "no need to worry until there's something real to worry about" but I'm close to tears thinking of the possibilities.

Has anyone experienced this and what was the outcome -- good OR bad?!?!

I believe I started a thread on this when I was pregnant. I had excess fluid, I think my number was 28 if that means anything to you. They sent me for a bunch of blood work and everything came back fine. Of course I was like you and googled it and then called my dr on her cell phone panicking. She didn't seem worried. I had read online that if you have excess fluid and your water breaks that you should lie flat right away because the cord could come out and my dr told me that my sons head was low enough that that wouldn't happen, I still worried though. My water broke when I was at work I was 3 days overdue and it actually didn't gush out but slowly kept coming out everytime I would walk. I drove myself to the hospital and he was born 2 hours later lol. There was nothing wrong with me or him, but he was a 9lb baby, my dr said that is probably why I had a lot of fluid. Try not to worry, I know its easier said then done, best of luck tomorrow

I had this too and they found out I had developed gestational diabetes at the end of my pregnancy. He was 9 lbs too! My water broke at the hospital and it was a ton and then even more came out during final push. I was freaked out about it too! I do think my labor was more intense and progressed faster b/c I could feel the pressure from the water with every contraction. Def. don't wait around when contractions start!

I have had this three times, all in varying degrees. Clearly I just tend to have a lot of fluid. I have three perfectly healthy, normal children. All three deliveries were different...but very successful.

I am a bit interested in the fact that your doc mentioned placental abruption as a risk of having excess fluid. I haven't heard that link. But did have an abruption with my third (her fluids were way, way high). I still delivered vaginally and had no bleeding problems. But no one ever mentioned the two being related.

I was told to go to the hospital immediately when my water broke. It did in two labors. One was crazy gushing/tidal wave. One was a more trickly type break, but each trickle could make a puddle.

I know it's hard, but try not to worry. Chances are that baby is just fine and birth will be uncomplicated.

Thanks everyone for the responses. In the end everything was ok--baby was delivered and is perfectly healthy, however it was quite the flood in the delivery room - dr and nurses had never seen anything like it! Husband joked that if its happened at home we would have had to file an insurance claim :) also, the baby had been swimming around in the fluid he got tangled in the cord and after the fluid wa gone it started compressing around him with every contraction and caused his heart rate to plunge so I ended up with an emergency c-section :((((. But we are both healthy and enjoying our extra day in the hospital so even though it was an unexpected turn, it wasn't that bad....

Oh btw dioui--my number was 44!!! Also, baby was 8 lbs 12 oz...big but not as huge as I was expecting :)
