why no peppermint while nursing?? I have always liked it and drank it not to sway or anything just for taste. I read it can lower milk production but I have an over supply and leak everywhere so i don't worry about that. Anything else?
I drank peppermint tea whilst nursing and swaying last time, I was taking 2 cups a day (as recommended for lowering T levels in women with PCOS/hirsutrism). It might lower milk production, but is not a risk to the baby in that dosage
Peppermint may lower testosterone and raise estrogen in addition to drying up breastmilk, and thus I do not recommend it in anything more than dietary amounts (like, a cup here or there, maybe not even daily, but this depends largely on how old and big your baby is). Baby boys at birth have as much testosterone proportionally as a 12 year old boy does - they NEED that T in their system to develop normally. This amount of T does drop off naturally over time and thus I'd wait till 6-9 months or even beyond.
Now, do we know that enough peppermint comes thru the milk to do anything harmful, no, and the odds are good that it is ~probably~ just fine in a cup a day range. I always tend to err on the side of caution because I have to assume that everything I say, people will carry to the furthest extreme possible.
:agree: that is an excellent way to do it, my kids are all of the "I want to nurse constantly" variety and since I co-sleep, I've never been able to manage that. :)
