Morning sickness advise please

Hi all,

I'm currently 5 weeks pregnant and the morning sickness has already come on strong. I can' t eat loads of my favourite foods and smells are turning my stomach. DH came in with pizza the other day and just the smell had me running for the toilet. I have to take supplements for magnesium, folate, cod liver, probiotics, etc and it's becoming a real pain in the bum as when I would normally take them is the time when I feel the worst, which is first thing in the morning. I've so far managed to continue to take them by just taking the probiotics with a gulp of water (anymore and it would come back up) then sitting down with a lemon and ginger tea, which definitely helps a little, then going back taking the rest with water and chasing it down with my morning coffee. I'm also finding that grazing through out the day on veggies, fruit and yogurt is helping currently, as if I get too hungry it makes me sick but I have to be very cautious what I'm eating.
Once I go back to work next week, it's going to be very hard to continue this routine as it's quite time consuming, especially the early morning one, as I have to get DS & DD ready as well as myself so I obviously wont have time to do it like that. Also with being off over Christmas still I have had easy access to food whenever I feel the need, once back at work that certainly won't be the case. I don't plan on telling work until after the 12 week scan if at all possible. Does anyone have any good advise on how to deal with morning sickness at work? Things that are easy to keep down and can be brought in with you? Any advise on this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry you're feeling miserable. Morning sickness can really ruin the first trimester! I had all day sickness with DS1 and DS2 and found some things helped or at least made it manageable. Like you've found, snacking throughout the day really does help with nausea and for me at least, the nausea was much less worse if I didn't let myself get too hungry. I know it's really hard to eat whenever you're feeling queasy and every food sounds gross, but it does help. Ginger candies are good for sucking on throughout the day, nibbling on crackers, small sips of soda (particularly coke seems helpful), and having a protein like nuts or a little cheese with your snack. With DS1 I pretty much survived on gatorade, popsicles, and fruit smoothies. They all help keep you hydrated and seem to be easy on the tummy. You could easily bring gatorade into work and for the smoothie, just make it in the morning and put in a to-go cup. Try to avoid food smells if you can! I know that's hard to do at work but the smell of any food cooking made me sick. Bland foods help too, along with any lighter foods like soups which are good take to work. I found the only meat I could eat was plain grilled chicken so maybe some kind of bland meat for work lunch? Have it with some plain rice and any veggies you can stand. I hope that helps!

Have you tried sucking on sour candies like lemon drops or Jolly Ranchers? That is the only thing that got me through morning sickness was sour candy from morning till night!

Thank you for the replies ladies. KSMOM does the caffeine in coke not add to the sickness? I've read a few places that say coffee can aggravate it for the same reason. That being said my morning coffee at the min seems to settle my stomach if anything, though I'm not sure if that's more to do with the milk and cream, plus the coffee is de-caff. I suppose it can't hurt to try though as that would be an easy one to follow, as they have them in the vending machines at work. Atomic Sagebrush I've never heard of that but will definitely give it a try. Did that work for you even when you were feeling hungry?

I've never heard of caffeine making morning sickness worse but I suppose it could for some people. Coke has a lot less caffeine in it than a cup of coffee does so I think it'd be okay. Root beer and 7-up/sprite also work well if you're worried about caffeine. I just found the taste of coke to be appealing and I've known other women who have found it to be helpful too

I've never found caffeine to give me morning sickness, especially the teeny amount in coke. Maybe the carbonation but the cold sweet bubblyness of pop always felt refreshing to me.

Coffee can be a gut bomb for sure, but if it's helping, great!

YES the sour candies worked to alleviate the hunger, just a little bit of sour sugar taste and it made me feel like I could eat actual food. I went from throwing up every day with my first son to not throwing up but a few times with the others once I learned that trick.
