Another folic question...

Hi Atomic... Im sorry to keep bringing up the questions about FA but id like some advice.
After my recent loss in May at 16 weeks, the full autopsy report came in recently. My family doctor who i have decided to stop seeing now, explained nothing, almost seemed like she understood nothing to tell me except there was a problem with the umbilical cord. Since my apointment a few weeks ago ive been left hanging with no answers and saddened i had no closure. After mentioning to many people i dont know where to go for someone to explain to me what happened and what I should do next. many people have told me about a doctor in my area who is an amazing doctor and used to be a Gyno and is extremely knowledgable in these areas. I got an apointment with her today and left the happiest I have been in a long time. I had answers, comfort and even resources to go to next.

She explained to me that the autopsy revealed a hypocoiled (I dont know if she said was HYPO or HYPERcoiled) umbilical cord. She explained the supply to the baby was cut off and that it is just a freak thing that had happened. Nothing could have stopped it. As hard as it is, I got an answer, my family doctor left me with the impression it was a defect that happened at conception but its aparently not the case....
Anyways, this Doctor had told me that if I am planning a pregnancy soon she would like me to start seeing a Gyno she knows straight away from early pregnancy, so that they can monitor me and that there are things they would like to do (Mentioned something about progesterone) but that will go into more detail when pregnant

I mentioned the folate to her and although she did agree that it may not be good to drop it cold turkey (As you said) All other doctors told me its okay Other than this one, but she told me to just stick with folic acid and that it is perfectly safe for me and the baby and easier to find.

My concern to her was that when looking online now to purchase folate it seems I will have to order upwards of 6 bottles to keep up with the 4 mg dose I am needing to take and will want to have extra to make sure i NEVER run out of it suddenly again as last time. I didnt go through with it just yet because of the crazy amount of money it came to at check out I cant afford. and it is SO hard to find where I live!

She assured me not to make myself crazy over this, I should stick to folic.
My question is, since folic acid is so easy to find and take I wish I could just take it instead but i cant seem to get the notion of folate being better out of my head. But something in me trusts this doctors advice so much too. I have had two healthy children on folic acid before i knew about folate last year. As far as I know, no other medical issues to ever imply i should never take folic acid and only take folate...
Just not sure what to do and I plan on ttc in october so I want to start something soon...

It can be either hypo- or hyper-, both can cause problems.

The doctors don't know about weaning off the folate/folic acid. None of them tell people to do that, unfortunately. This is something that is simply good sense and has appeared to work well for us and we have seen firsthand several pregnancy losses in people who dropped it suddenly or switched from folate to folic acid. These losses were unexplained; just because yours did in the end happen to have a different explanation doesn't mean that it isn't just as important to wean off it (and I know that is not what you're saying here, I just want to be perfectly clear on that for other people.)

I am fine with you using folic acid if you think that would be easier for you. My concern only has ever been that you don't start off on folate, and then suddenly switch to folic acid, or worse drop them all together all at once.
