Group B strep is VERY dangerous if you deliver and baby gets an infection. I had a friend who had to be taken to Chapel Hill (2.5 hrs away - very specialized hospital) where her baby spent over a month and nearly died (she didn't know she had it). I had group B strep last time and I got to the hospital at 7 CM. They rushed to get a bag of antibiotics in my IV...everything was fine with my baby! Very scared of it after that!
They must check it in somehow - I just never hear about it!

So it isn't routinely screened for here.
It is common, and from what I understand many people have given birth while they have it and had no problems. But the babies who pick it up and become infected can have serious complications.
