I was hopeful that it was just a clogged duct, but after checking it out the doctor told me it was not that. She decided to send me to an oncologist. Because I am nursing I couldn't have a mammogram, so instead my doctor wanted me to have an ultrasound done. The next morning I met with a wonderful oncologist (who is absolutely fantastic because she squeezed me in at 7:30 in the morning rather than make me wait until December). The mass was so large that she was not able to see the entire thing at once. She told me she thought it might be a fibroadenoma or phyllodes tumor but a biopsy needed to be done to rule out anything malignant. The procedure was fairly quick and painless (with the exception of a little stinging while she numbed the area). We talked about the need to remove the mass because of it's size and I went home preparing to have surgery at some point. This evening they called to inform me that what I have is a lactating adenoma. It is a benign tumor and it should go down on its own (which would mean no surgery). I am so relieved!
