It is NOT a very high chance to give it to a newborn with maternal immunity. It is next to zero chance if you have had it since you were a kid. All sources agree that it's unheard of. It is only contracted once the natural immunity wears off.

Yes, my children all have over the course of their childhoods, contracted herpes virus. Whether from me, their dad, grandparents or siblings, they have gotten it one way or the other. Usually between the ages of 2-6 they had the primary infection ONCE THEIR NATURAL IMMUNITY WORE OFF. And you know what, that doesn't make me an unsafe or dirty or bad mom.

If your kids haven't gotten it (which I doubt because it's super contagious and you can have the infection and never get cold sores) your daughters will grow up and have no immunity to it to pass down to their babies. Or, worse still, they'll get it from oral sex done from someone who does have it (and this is a real problem that is happening right now because oral sex has become so prevalent among teenagers) because if you've never had it, then it's much easier to get the oral herpes below the equator. I'm not saying it's good or bad for them to have it, just that they won't have any immunity to it as teens and adults. Personally I am glad my kids have it. Some research even indicates it may be beneficial to the immune system.

I am seriously not trying to be a bitch, I am AS ALWAYS trying to give factual information to put people's minds at ease. People want to argue with me about the facts, I can't control that. I am not going to read this thread any more and I wish you all the best.

Wow- I hope I was not trying to put fear into any ladies. I was not talking about killing your child, didn't mention any crazy drugs, but no I do not kiss anyone w an open sore and try to minimize spreading to others by not sharing cups/ food especially if I have a sore. If my kids have it or my dh their immune system is in tip top shape and they have not had an outbreak. All you can do is try to prevent spreading to others which we should all be responsible about.

I think the stress of no sleep and a newborn caught up with me and I have a small one now. [emoji17] Bummed.

But, I did come back to this for some reassurance. I haven't kissed him today since I first felt it and have been washing my hands and using Avant like crazy. It does make me feel better to know he probably has the antibodies, but I'll for sure keep an eye on him the next few weeks. Just seems like one more thing to worry about!

Both my parets have the virus. And yes many many have them. Some get sores often, some very rarely. I was very lucky my mom is a nurse and educated in the area. She and my dad never kissed us when having the open sores on the mouth, sucked the dummie to clean it or share utentils with us at that time. And none of us ever got it luckily. Same for my husband.
I'm not scared at all for my children to be "non-protected", and would never try and infect them for that reason. Herpes on the mouth is annoying but not dangerous, except for a baby possibly, but I have never heard of these cases. I would never let anyone with a sore kiss my baby though. For me that is common sence.
Reading this thread, I do realise we might have different views on the subject. I would like to add that as far as I know, nobody is a dr so I would be caucious to say that I give the "facts".

I think for the most part I'm just glad to hear stories from others who either have it themselves or parents who have them and lived to tell about it. When I look for any advice elsewhere, I feel like I only find that I'm going to kill my baby if I kiss him. [emoji53] Obviously I'm being very careful right now about not kissing him and not touching it, using q-tips instead, and washing my hands frequently. It just really, really sucks - #1 because it sucks having cold sores and it hurts and #2 I'm so paranoid about being careful around him and worrying.

Taytum, you are doing everything just right. :) Keep up the good work and do try that Blistex Deep Renewal, it's worked wonders for me (not because you're going to kill your baby if you don't, because cold sores do suck when you have one.)

I'm going to get the Blistex for sure atomic! I was spoiled by rarely having them any more, but I'm sure stress and fatigue caught up with me. I think I caught it early (weird no tingling or itchy this time, just swollen). So hoping it clears up in a week. I need to get back to life!

I just wanted to update this while I was thinking of it!

I had a long conversation with him about the loss of his daughter one day and he said it was from Cytomegalovirus (CMV). She developed it in the womb and only lived a few short hours after being born.

I just wanted to clarify in case anyone else stumbled upon this thread! [emoji4]

Two years of perspective later and I still find this post so unbelievably annoying that I am going to reply to it even though I shouldn't and it's totally unprofessional for me to do so.

Some of us were actually giving the facts and some of us were scaremongering.

Yep, I'm not a doctor. Never claimed to be one. But I do a lot to help people and I believe at times, more than most doctors do (and many people have told me that I helped them more than their doctors did so that is not just me being an arrogant ass). Doctors know what they know - they can fix my broken arm anytime - and then there are things they really just don't know that much about. Each individual doctor has their own set of strengths and weaknesses because it is literally impossible for doctors to know everything about all infectious diseases and every organ in the body. That is why they have specialists, is because it's impossible for one person to know everything about how the human body works.

On some things, I just happen to have done a good amount of research. I don't know everything, not even close, but there are a handful of things I do know about and I just want to give people accurate information instead of scaring people silly over things that are not worth being scared about. I like to share what I have learned with people since 99% of folks online have some bizarre love of terrifying people.

This just so happened to be one of those things I had looked into extensively, just like I had with gender swaying, and knew quite a lot about it, because one of my sons had a herpetic whitlow and the doctor I went to knew literally nothing about it and so I had to figure it out myself. I like researching stuff, it's fun to me, so when I encounter a health concern, my first reaction is to research it thoroughly. I have sat in doctor's offices while they literally went on the internet to look things up in front of me so that is actually how THEY are getting their info too whether they are "educated" or not.

My info comes from the CDC, the WHO, scientific studies, and several actual medical textbooks I have. I put that up against "my mother was a nurse 25 years ago before anyone understood how this worked and this is what she did" any day of the week. And BTW it is entirely possible that children can have had herpes virus and not get cold sores (and in fact this is the case for most people, they had the virus as kids but then never get cold sores) so just because you think you didn't contract it from your parents, isn't necessarily true.

Ladies, there will ALWAYS be something out there that people online will try to scare you about. There are things to be scared of and things that are just people trying to make you worry over nothing since that is apparently what some enjoy doing online. I am not one of those people, I prefer to reassure when I can and if ever there is cause for alarm, I PROMISE I will be the first person telling you to be alarmed. (things to be alarmed about - Zika virus. do not be alarmed about cold sores) Don't panic, just apply common sense, take sensible precautions, but don't make yourself miserable and terrified over things that are not worth being miserable and terrified about. Being miserable and terrified is ALSO not good for an unborn baby.

I'm always happy to answer anyone's questions about anything, whether it's gender swaying or parenting or some other thing and if I don't know the answer I will find out for you.
